Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sermon on the Occasion of the Death of General William Henry Harrison: Late President of the United States, Delivered in the Chapel of Randolph Maoon College, April 18, 1841 I. Upon the wide and sublime relation, which the Divine Being holds to man in his associated capacity. Perhaps, I ought to be more definite still in this proposition. I mean that relation which he holds to man as a tenant of this world alone, and not as he will exist when he leaves it; the relation which refers to those shapes which society assumes for the common weal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Discourses on the Occasion of the Death of William Henry Harrison, Late President of the U. States: Delivered in the City of Alton, Illinois, on Sabbath, April 18; And on Friday, May 14 One of two results usually follows the afflictive dispensations of the Almighty; either "hardness of heart," or "submission to God." This is true in the case of nations and of individuals. The text furnishes us with the exhibition of the fruit of humility and obedience, in consequence of the visitation of the righteous judgments of Heaven. It is a holy, guarded, subdued walk, attended with penitence of soul to the end of one's life. More cannot be required; and of it we may say, in the language of inspiration - "It is enough." And here let me ask, if, as a nation, we are not admonished to walk softly before God? Whose voice has so recently spoken from the high places of power in removing from us by death the Chief Magistrate of these United States? Whose awful providence has dressed the chamber of the great and the brave in the drapery of sorrow? Who, to the man on whom this great people had fixed their hopes, has said, "come down;" and suddenly he came down, and exchanged the insignia of a nations trust for the shroud and the tomb? In the midst of hope, of joy, and of veneration, that holy Being, who sitteth in the heavens, and counteth man as dust, has dashed our cup with bitterness and lamentation; and there goeth up, from the length and breadth of this land, the gloomy dirge, "Know ye not that there is a great man fallen." Having finished their public duties, and retired to the shades of domestic tranquillity, the majority of our Chief Magistrates have descended the hill of life, and quietly repose in the last bed of man. - For these events this Nation was somewhat prepared. But now, in the midst of plans merely sketched out; while not only this people, but, as it were, the civilized world, in a hushed breath were wailing for the development and issue of affairs pregnant, as was trusted, with a nation's weal - I say, in this state of things we are called to pause, dig the grave, and bury from our sight the very personage on whom the consummation of these things eminently depended. Solemn and appalling are these facts; but they are conducted by a wise and unerring hand. We needed this check. As a people, we have long been blessed of Heaven; but, I fear, in the midst of prosperity we have too much forgotten the fountain of all good. It may seem wise and befitting, therefore, that Heaven should thus speak to us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sermon, in Memory of the Death of William Henry Harrison: The Late President of the United States To those who know that "the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain," it may be a matter of some surprise to find it gravely recorded that "there is n time to mourn." - Might they not ask, "when can time be found for mirth, in this world of sin and death?" Yet they are told with equal gravity, "there is a time to rejoice." God hath graciously preserved man as a prisoner of hope and sent his only begotten Son "to proclaim liberty to the captives, the opening of the prison doors to them that are bound - to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God." The proclamation of liberty makes a time of joy - but the day of vengeance makes a time of grief. The truth of our text is applicable to individuals, to families, to nations. Its application to nations, particularly to our own nation, we are this day called to consider. No nation, under heaven, since Israel was led from the house of bondage, has ever been more favored of God than these United States. The delivery of the thirteen confederated Colonies, from the usurpation of Great Britain, was almost as miraculous as the Exodus of the twelve tribes from Egypt. Many seasons, of great rejoicing, have been afforded to us under the star-spangled banner, adorned with this significant motto, "E Pluribus Unum." This bibliography provides a guide to the literature on his extensive career.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Voice of the Rod: A Sermon, Delivered at Albany, May 14, 1841, the Day of the National Fast, Occasioned by the Death of the Late William Henry Harrison, President of the United States It has not been my custom to apologize for my own productions on the contrary I have suffered even the most hasty of them to go to the publick for What they were worth 5 considering it a good general rule, that if a sermon is too poor to print Without an apology, it is too poor to print at all. In consenting, however, to the publication of this discourse, as I am aware that it very imperfectly meets the expectation which the occasion might reasonably justify, it is due to myself to state that it was necessarily prepared in a few hours, when I had but partially recovered from the fatigue of a jour ney; to say nothing of the fact of which you are already apprized, that I had previously delivered two other discourses on the same subject, in the same place, and to some extent to the same congrega tion so that for this there remained little else than the gathering up of the fragments. But for the mysterious disappearance from my study of the mss. Of the two former, one of them, would have been given to the publick instead of this, which is now somewhat hesita tingly yielded to your wishes. I beg you will accept, Gentlemen, the assurance of my highest regard. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
