They dread lest the progress of inquiry should bring to light some hidden defect in the grounds of our religion. They are, in fact, doubters, though they know it not. They wish to believe. They cannot bear to hear a word said which implies that any cherished view is wrong. But this arises from a lurking suspicion that there is something unsound in the fabric of their faith. To such minds these discourses are addressed. I would frankly point out to them the principles on which myown faith is built; and I cannot but'hope that theirs 'will gain strength by the exposition. The interests of speculative science and of practical piety appear to me so intimately blended, that it would cause me deep sorrow to think that I had laid a rude hand on either. What I have recently published explains the negative side of my faith. In regard to the lighter literature of France, it must be allowed that its aspect for three years past, has not been so pleasing. It has strongly reflected the political and social fermentation which has existed since the revolution of 1830. The English reader will obtain a view of its character from the Foreign Quarterly Beview, No. 18, and the Edinburgh Review, No. 116. He will perceive that notwithstanding the wild and morbid spirit, the cynicism, the scenes of blended horror, mirth and attrocity which appear in the dramatic and roo mantic writings of Janin, Balzac, Rabou, Charles, doc. Yet the lighter lit critturs of the present day, is by no means a professedly ifqidel literature like that of the 18th century. In regard to these strange and exaggerated creations, it is a singular and consoling feature, that at the bottom of them all, lies the admission of the necessity of a religion. In short, it is a period of ferment. It is transitional. The agitation will disappear. In the mean time, there are writers, such as Victor Hugo, and Lamartine, who pour forth their inspirations from a loftier and moresequutered seat. The latter is, by universal consent, admitted to be the Postof Frame; and his verses are imbued with a pervading spin rit of religion, with inmges and thoughts, rte-ascending to that heaven from which they had their birth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Religious Life The chief object for which this work has been written is to furnish those who wish to lead a solidly devout life in the Ecclesiastical, in the Religious, or in the Secular State, with a manual or text-book containing, in as compendious a form as possible, the 'principles' upon which such a life must be built. The sources whence materials for an undertaking of this kind may be drawn are various and numerous; but out of the many at my disposal, two are especially deserving of mention, inasmuch as it has been by the doctrine which I have learnt from them, that I have been guided in much that has been treated of in this book. The first of these are the works of Cassian, to which, as a child of St. Benedict, I felt myself drawn as it were by instinct; for, it was from the world-famed 'Conferences' of this learned ascetic that our holy Father drew much of that spiritual lore which is so conspicuous in the various enactments of his Rule, and to the pages of which he refers his children, for those sublime lessons of spiritual wisdom, which will lead them to the topmost height of Christian perfection. Cassian's teaching, save upon the question of divine grace, is unexceptionally good. His deficiency upon this point may be satisfactorily accounted for, if we bear in mind that in his day various questions which arise out of this most intricate subject had not been thoroughly examined into and set at rest for ever by the infallible decision of the Church. The second is the 'Theologia Mystica' of Father Dominick Schram, O.S.B., in which that erudite Religious has bequeathed to us valuable treasures of Christian asceticism arranged with scientific accuracy, and stored away with scholastic neatness and precision. The plan of which I have made use for reducing to order the mass of material which presented itself to my hands, is a very simple one.
