In 1990s researchers came to conclusion that the chemistry of the injected water can be important in improving oil recovery. The low salinity water injection (LoSal® ) has become one of the promising topics in the oil industry. It is believed that the main mechanism for incremental oil recovery in low salinity flooding is wettability alteration. Several papers discussed that the wettability alteration from oil-wet to mixed- or water-wet takes place due to clay swelling and expanding of double layer in sandstones and calcite dissolution along with rock surface reactions in carbonates. However, there is no consensus on a single main mechanism for the low salinity effect on oil recovery. The main objective of this research is to conduct sensitivity analysis on main parameters in low salinity waterflooding and its hybrid processes affecting oil recovery in carbonates. We compare results by using coupled reservoir simulator UTCOMP-IPhreeqc. UTCOMP is the compositional reservoir simulator developed at the Center for Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering in The University of Texas at Austin. IPhreeqc is the module-based version of the PHREEQC geochemical package, a state-of-the-art geochemical package developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). We investigate the effect of low salinity water and carbon dioxide on oil recovery from carbonates by modeling the processes through the UTCOMP-IPhreeqc simulator. We perform sensitivity analysis on continuous gas injection (CGI), water-alternating-gas (WAG) flooding, and polymer-water-alternate-water (PWAG) flooding. We study the significance of reservoir parameters, such as reservoir heterogeneity (Dykstra-Parsons coefficient, Vdp, and crossflow, kv/kh), the salinity of injected water, the composition of gas, and polymer concentration in polymer-water solution on cumulative oil recovery. Moreover, we study the importance of inclusion of the hydrocarbon CO2 impact on the aqueous-rock geochemistry by comparing two scenarios where in one scenario the hydrocarbon CO2 effect is included in UTCOMP-IPhreeqc whereas in the other one the effect is neglected. Finally, we perform sensitivity analysis on PWAG flooding for most influential design parameters using Design of Expert software. The reservoir parameters, such as average reservoir permeability, reservoir heterogeneity, and crossflow and injected polymer-water solution parameters, such as polymer concentration and salinity of injected water are optimization parameters in this study.

Book excerpt: Low salinity waterflooding is an emerging enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technique in which the salinity of the injected water is substantially reduced to improve oil recovery over conventional higher salinity waterflooding. Although there are many low salinity experimental results reported in the literature, publications on modeling this process are rare. While there remains some debate about the mechanisms of low salinity waterflooding, the geochemical reactions that control the wetting of crude oil on the rock are likely to be central to a detailed description of the process. Since no comprehensive geochemical-based modeling has been applied in this area, we decided to couple a state-of-the-art geochemical package, IPhreeqc, developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) with UTCOMP, the compositional reservoir simulator developed at the Center for Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering in The University of Texas at Austin. A step-by-step algorithm is presented for integrating IPhreeqc with UTCOMP. Through this coupling, we are able to simulate homogeneous and heterogeneous (mineral dissolution/precipitation), irreversible, and ion-exchange reactions under non-isothermal, non-isobaric and both local-equilibrium and kinetic conditions. Consistent with the literature, there are significant effects of water-soluble hydrocarbon components (e.g., CO2, CH4, and acidic/basic components of the crude) on buffering the aqueous pH and more generally, on the crude oil, brine, and rock reactions. Thermodynamic constrains are used to explicitly include the effect of these water-soluble hydrocarbon components. Hence, this combines the geochemical power of IPhreeqc with the important aspects of hydrocarbon flow and compositional effects to produce a robust, flexible, and accurate integrated tool capable of including the reactions needed to mechanistically model low salinity waterflooding. The geochemical module of UTCOMP-IPhreeqc is further parallelized to enable large scale reservoir simulation applications. We hypothesize that the total ionic strength of the solution is the controlling factor of the wettability alteration due to low salinity waterflooding in sandstone reservoirs. Hence, a model based on the interpolating relative permeability and capillary pressure as a function of total ionic strength is implemented in the UTCOMP-IPhreeqc simulator. We then use our integrated simulator to match and interpret a low salinity experiment published by Kozaki (2012) (conducted on the Berea sandstone core) and the field trial done by BP at the Endicott field (sandstone reservoir). On the other hand, we believe that during the modified salinity waterflooding in carbonate reservoirs, calcite is dissolved and it liberates the adsorbed oil from the surface; hence, fresh surface with the wettability towards more water-wet is created. Therefore, we model wettability to be dynamically altered as a function of calcite dissolution in UTCOMP-IPhreeqc. We then apply our integrated simulator to model not only the oil recovery but also the entire produced ion histories of a recently published coreflood by Chandrasekhar and Mohanty (2013) on a carbonate core. We also couple IPhreeqc with UTCHEM, an in-house research chemical flooding reservoir simulator developed at The University of Texas at Austin, for a mechanistic integrated simulator to model alkaline/surfactant/polymer (ASP) floods. UTCHEM has a comprehensive three phase (water, oil, microemulsion) flash calculation package for the mixture of surfactant and soap as a function of salinity, temperature, and co-solvent concentration. Similar to UTCOMP-IPhreeqc, we parallelize the geochemical module of UTCHEM-IPhreeqc. Finally, we show how apply the integrated tool, UTCHEM-IPhreeqc, to match three different reaction-related chemical flooding processes: ASP flooding in an acidic active crude oil, ASP flooding in a non-acidic crude oil, and alkaline/co-solvent/polymer (ACP) flooding.

Low salinity waterflooding gains popularity due to its low cost, availability of water, and high displacement efficiency of light to medium gravity oil. Various mechanisms behind low salinity waterflooding have been proposed. However, the dominant underlying mechanism is still under debate due to the complex nature of the interaction between crude oil/brine/rock (COBR). Temperature has been reported to play a significant role in the process of low salinity waterflooding, particularly in carbonates. Temperature may affect geochemical reactions between rock surface, crude oil, and water and consequently alter the rock wettability. Investigating the temperature effect not only helps identify optimum condition to achieve additional oil recovery but also contributes to understanding the mechanisms behind low salinity waterflooding. In order to investigate the temperature effect on low salinity waterflooding, we implemented an energy module in the UTCOMP-IPhreeqc simulator. Hereafter, we refer to the improved simulator as “non-isothermal UTCOMP-IPhreeqc.” UTCOMP-IPhreeqc is capable of modeling non-isothermal, multi-dimensional, and multi-phase transport process with geochemical calculations between water, minerals, gases, ion exchangers, kinetics, and surface complexes. Non-isothermal UTCOMP-IPhreeqc was then applied to study the temperature effect on low salinity coreflood experiments of sandstone and carbonate rocks based on the laboratory work of Kozaki (2012) and Chandrasekhar (2013), respectively. Our simulation results revealed that for the sandstone case, changing the temperature from 30 to 120 oC has insignificant effect on the oil recovery. We believe the reason is due to the fact that for this specific case the total ionic strength and the viscosity ratio (water viscosity over oil viscosity) did not change with increasing temperature. Noteworthy, double-layer expansion is assumed to be the underlying mechanism for low salinity waterflooding in sandstones in non-isothermal UTCOMP-IPhreeqc. On the other hand, the total ionic strength is the main controlling parameter for the double-layer expansion. For the carbonate case, with increasing temperature from 120 to 150 oC, oil recovery increased for both formation brine and low salinity water injection. The reason: while the viscosity ratio remained constant, calcite dissolution increases as the temperature increases. The calcite dissolution is assumed to be the underlying mechanism for low salinity water in carbonates in non-isothermal UTCOMP-IPhreeqc. Hence, as more calcite dissolves the wettability of the rock changes towards more water-wet. As a result, oil recovery improves.

Their empirical relations with respect to wetting phase saturation demonstrate irreversibility usually referred to as hysteresis. In this dissertation, an experimental setup (Coretest, CP-355) was designed and built to enable measuring hysteresis of capillary as well as two- and four-electrode resistivity (at five different frequencies simultaneously) using reservoir fluids at elevated temperature and pressure; another experimental device used in this study was the core flooding system to conduct unsteady-state coreflooding experiments. Capillary pressure and electrical resistivity hysteresis curves were obtained directly from experiments performed using the CP-355; meanwhile, relative permeability and a hysteresis behavior were obtained by history matching the unsteady-state coreflooding experiments with consideration of capillary hysteresis. Direct determination of relative permeability curves from history matching the capillary pressure experiment failed due to the high resistance of ceramic disk used in the typical quasi-static method that controlled the equilibrium time. This leads to additional testing of new capillary pressure measuring configurations with a degree of success. To investigate the low-salinity effect on hysteresis phenomena, high salinity-high salinity and high salinity-low salinity experiments were carried out on two reservoir rocks (whose properties are quite similar) with reservoir fluids at elevated temperature. Results showed a more noticeable hysteresis for low-salinity brine, which could be explained by higher water-wetness and mineral dissolution induced by low-salinity brine. To further explore low-salinity waterflooding mechanisms, four additional experiments were planned to first investigate the interfacial viscoelasticity effect with exclusion of wettability alteration by conducting experiments at low temperature without aging. We then introduced the effect of wettability alteration by aging the core sample at irreducible water saturation for 3 weeks at high temperature. Furthermore, for these aforementioned experiments, a newly developed dynamic-static method was used to accelerate capillary pressure experiments. Two experimental results on interfacial viscoelasticity effects have been obtained as of now, and two others are still ongoing. Based on all the current results, we conclude that 1) brine with low enough salinity produces a higher viscoelasticity shown before to suppress snap-off with the consequently diminished hysteresis; 2) low salinity can turn the rock more water-wet at high temperature, but resulting in more snap-off and thus more hysteresis; 3) wettability has a noticeable effect on electrical resistivity hysteresis -- the more oil-wet, the more hysteresis (resistivity values are higher in imbibition than in drainage). Capillary and relative permeability hysteresis are also crucial for CO2 sequestration in aquifers and oil reservoirs through residual trapping and local capillary trapping. In this dissertation, two separate studies were conducted -- a sensitivity analysis on CO2 storage in surrogate Tensleep fractured aquifers using computer experiments and an economic co-optimization study of oil recovery and CO2 sequestration on the 2nd Wall Creek Formation at "East Salt Creek" and the Tensleep Formation at "Teapot Dome". The sensitivity analysis in aquifers shows that fractures play a negative role in CO2 storage, especially when an active aquifer at the bottom is present and dissolution trapping dominates among all the trapping mechanism. Co-optimization of CO2 EOR and storage in oil reservoirs were realized by combining Leach et al.'s rigorous economic model and dynamic reservoir models. The results show that it is necessary to gradually taper the CO2-injection rate to save CO2 recycling costs and thus maximize NPV and paradoxically, cumulative CO2 sequestration is highly insensitive to sequestration subsidies.

In most of the sandstone flooding experiments, the permeability will decrease because of the migration of fine particles except some cores with extremely high initial permeability. Secondly, according to the particles detachment model six rock/fluid system properties are pointed out to be the reason of particles detachment in porous media, including clay minerals concentration, injection brine velocity, brine salinity, brine pH, divalent ion concentration and oil viscosity. Book excerpt: Crude oil development and production in U.S. oil reservoirs can include up to three distinct phases: primary, secondary, and tertiary (or enhanced) recovery. During primary recovery, the natural pressure of the reservoir or gravity drive oil into the wellbore, combined with artificial lift techniques (such as pumps) which bring the oil to the surface. But only about 10 percent of a reservoir's original oil in place is typically produced during primary recovery. Secondary recovery techniques to the field's productive life generally by injecting water or gas to displace oil and drive it to a production wellbore, resulting in the recovery of 20 to 40 percent of the original oil in place. In the past two decades, major oil companies and research organizations have conducted extensive theoretical and laboratory EOR (enhanced oil recovery) researches, to include validating pilot and field trials relevant to much needed domestic commercial application, while western countries had terminated such endeavours almost completely due to low oil prices. In recent years, oil demand has soared and now these operations have become more desirable.
