Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Search for the Apex of America, High Mountain Climbing in Peru and Bolivia Including the Conquest of Huascaran: With Some Observations on the Country and People Below For the cold nights we had sleeping bags consisting of two pairs of blankets in a canvas cover, with a ap to be drawn over the face. It occurred to me to carry Japanese stoves; small, cloth-covered tin boxes which a roll of prepared fuel will heat for two hours. With one of these in each pocket and good mittens, there would be no danger of cold hands. I had also a pair of heavy woollen mitts with long wrists, especially suited for scientific observations on the summit when the fingers must be free. For our further protection we had two tents, one of silk that it might be as light as pos sible, since at great altitudes neither man nor beast can carry half so much as below. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annie Smith Peck is one of the most accomplished women of the twentieth century that you have never heard of. Peck was a scholar, educator, writer, lecturer, mountain climber, suffragist, and political activist. She was a feminist and an independent thinker who refused to let gender stereotypes stand in her way. Peck gained fame in 1895 when she first climbed the Matterhorn at the age of forty-five – not for her daring alpine feat, but because she climbed wearing pants. Fifteen years later, she was the first climber ever to conquer Mount Huascarán (21,831 feet) in Peru. In 1911, just before her sixtieth birthday, she entered a race with Hiram Bingham (the model for Indiana Jones) to climb Mount Coropuna. A Woman’s Place Is at the Top: The Biography of Annie Smith Peck is the first full length work about this incredible woman who single-handedly carved her place on the map of mountain climbing and international relations. Peck marched in suffrage parades and became a political speaker and writer before women had the right to vote. She was a propagandist, an expert on North-South American relations, and an author and lecturer contracted to speak as an authority on multinational industry and commerce before anyone had ever thought to appoint a woman as a diplomat. With unprecedented access to Peck’s original letters, artifacts, and ephemera, Hannah Kimberley brings Peck’s entire life to the page for the first time, giving Peck her rightful place in history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is an understatement to say that women are real people with true and great abilities just like men, yet it does seem like forever that we have been debating the rights of women and how they match up against the rights of men. By every reckoning, there is no blockage to the total equality of women to men, yet again, there it is. In spite of everything that has been accomplished, there still exists somewhat of a prejudice. In spite of this prejudice, young women need to know about those great, sometimes not-too-well-known, women who have pushed and prodded and fought like crazy to get todays women to a spot that would have been unheard of only a relatively short time agowomen who deserve the highest praise, and placed in the highest echelons of respect and honor. And even in politics, women have been able to bring more choices for the voters, with more women being elected as mayors, to county and state legislatures, executive offices, congress, and beyond. And despite the hectic pace and all the infighting, there have been far fewer who have been forced to resign because of incompetence or criminality. Many of the women discussed in these pages could have been even more useful and helpful had they not had faced that wordtradition. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony were some team. Their organizational skills and tireless efforts could not have been met with failure. It goes back to Stanton calling a womens rights convention in Seneca Falls, New York, in 1848. Someday we will truly be a land of equality, practicing what it preaches, and the women will get us there. Hopefully, this book will encourage young women of today to keep up the good fight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inspiration for any young person who loves the outdoors, wildlife, or science, A World of Her Own tells the stories of 24 brave women from different cultures, epochs, and economic backgrounds who have shared similar missions: to meet the physical and mental challenges of exploring the natural world, to protect the environment and native cultures, and to leave a mark in the name of discovery. Among the many bold women profiled are Rosaly Lopes, who worked for NASA and discovered 71 volcanoes on one of Jupiter's moons; Helen Thayer, the first woman to walk and ski the Magnetic North Pole accompanied by only her dog; Kay Cottee, the first woman to successfully sail nonstop around the world completely unassisted; and Anna Smith Peck, who set the record for the highest climb in the Western Hemisphere at the age of 58. These and other engaging profiles, based on both historical research and firsthand interviews, stress how childhood passions and interests, perseverance, and courage led these women to overcome challenges and break barriers to achieve great success in their adventurous pursuits and careers. A bibliography and annotated list of exploration resources and organizations make this an invaluable resource for young explorers, parents, and teachers alike.
