Book excerpt: Adaptive mesh refinement selectively subdivides the elements of a coarse user supplied mesh to produce a fine mesh with reduced discretization error. Effective use of adaptive mesh refinement coupled with an a posteriori error estimator can produce a mesh that solves a problem to a given discretization error using far fewer elements than uniform refinement. A geometric multigrid solver uses increasingly finer discretizations of the same geometry to produce a very fast and numerically scalable solution to a set of linear equations. Adaptive mesh refinement is a natural method for creating the different meshes required by the multigrid solver. This paper describes the implementation of a scalable adaptive multigrid method on a distributed memory parallel computer. Results are presented that demonstrate the parallel performance of the methodology by solving a linear elastic rocket fuel deformation problem on an SGI Origin 3000. Two challenges must be met when implementing adaptive multigrid algorithms on massively parallel computing platforms. First, although the fine mesh for which the solution is desired may be large and scaled to the number of processors, the multigrid algorithm must also operate on much smaller fixed-size data sets on the coarse levels. Second, the mesh must be repartitioned as it is adapted to maintain good load balancing. In an adaptive multigrid algorithm, separate mesh levels may require separate partitioning, further complicating the load balance problem. This paper shows that, when the proper optimizations are made, parallel adaptive multigrid algorithms perform well on machines with several hundreds of processors.

Book excerpt: We examine the effect of the step size on the convergence rates of multigrid, and present results of experiments on two parallel architectures: a four processor Cray Y-MP and a fourteen processor Alliant FX/2800. Our results demonstrate that multigrid can achieve very high parallel efficiency on coarse-grained shared memory machines, and that explicit methods are not likely to be competitive with multigrid based implicit methods on such machines."

Book excerpt: Multigrid algorithms are known to be highly efficient in solving systems of elliptic equations. However, standard multi grid algorithms fail to achieve optimal grid-independent convergence rates in solving non-elliptic problems. In many practical cases, the non-elliptic part of a problem is represented by the convection operator. Downstream marching, when it is viable, is the simplest and most efficient way to solve this operator. However, in a parallel setting, the sequential nature of marching degrades the efficiency of the algorithm. The aim of this report is to present, evaluate and analyze an alternative highly parallel multi grid method for 3-D convection-dominated problems. This method employs semi coarsening, a four-color plane-implicit smoother, and discretization rules allowing the same cross-characteristic interactions on all the grids involved to be maintained. The resulting multigrid solver exhibits a fast grid-independent convergence rate for solving the convection-diffusion operator on cell-centered grids with stretching. The load imbalance below the critical level is the main source of inefficiency in its parallel implementation. A hybrid smoother that degrades the convergence properties of the method but improves its granularity has been found to be the best choice in a parallel setting. The numerical and parallel properties of the multi grid algorithm with the four-color and hybrid smoothers are studied on SGI Origin 2000 and Cray T3E systems.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "The use of well-shaped unstructured meshes is essential for three dimensional applications with complex geometries or whose solution changes rapidly. Computationally, both hierarchical and adaptive methods perform an iterative computation over a series of unstructured meshes and use interpolation or restriction to transform partial solutions from mesh to mesh. The effectiveness of parallel hierarchical and adaptive computing rely on an efficient and scalable parallel solution to a set of key algorithmic problems such as mesh generation, graph partitioning, mesh coarsening, adaptive refinement, unstructured interpolation, sparse linear system solving and many other problems that they subsequently creat [sic]. This paper proposes a unified approach to solve these problems simultaneously. Our approach exploits the geometric structure of the problem and has application to multigrid (MG) and domain decomposition (DD) on unstructured meshes. Its kernel is the geometric mesh partitioner developed by Miller, Teng, Thurston and Vavasis. Our 3D algorithm has the same simplicity as a 2D algorithm."

Book excerpt: This paper describes an approach for the numerical solution of time-dependent partial differential equations in complex three-dimensional domains. The domains are represented by overlapping structured grids, and block-structured adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) is employed to locally increase the grid resolution. In addition, the numerical method is implemented on parallel distributed-memory computers using a domain-decomposition approach. The implementation is flexible so that each base grid within the overlapping grid structure and its associated refinement grids can be independently partitioned over a chosen set of processors. A modified bin-packing algorithm is used to specify the partition for each grid so that the computational work is evenly distributed amongst the processors. All components of the AMR algorithm such as error estimation, regridding, and interpolation are performed in parallel. The parallel time-stepping algorithm is illustrated for initial-boundary-value problems involving a linear advection-diffusion equation and the (nonlinear) reactive Euler equations. Numerical results are presented for both equations to demonstrate the accuracy and correctness of the parallel approach. Exact solutions of the advection-diffusion equation are constructed, and these are used to check the corresponding numerical solutions for a variety of tests involving different overlapping grids, different numbers of refinement levels and refinement ratios, and different numbers of processors. The problem of planar shock diffraction by a sphere is considered as an illustration of the numerical approach for the Euler equations, and a problem involving the initiation of a detonation from a hot spot in a T-shaped pipe is considered to demonstrate the numerical approach for the reactive case. For both problems, the solutions are shown to be well resolved on the finest grid. The parallel performance of the approach is examined in detail for the shock diffraction problem.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "This paper presents an efficient parallel multigrid solver for speeding up the computation of a 3-D model that treats the flow of a viscous fluid over a flat plate. The main interest of this simulation lies in exhibiting some basic difficulties that prevent optimal multigrid efficiencies from being achieved. As the computing platform, we have used Coral, a Beowulf-class system based on Intel Pentium processors and equipped with GigaNet cLAN and switched Fast Ethernet networks. Our study not only examines the scalability of the solver but also includes a performance evaluation of Coral where the investigated solver has been used to compare several of its design choices, namely, the interconnection network (GigaNet versus switched Fast-Ethernet) and the node configuration (dual nodes versus single nodes). As a reference, the performance results have been compared with those obtained with the NAS-MG benchmark."
