Book excerpt: Along the way are hurricanes in the Atlantic, typhoons and earthquakes in the Pacific and the Orient, wild times on Navy ships and on Navy liberty ashore, as well as rescues at sea--including the famous sinking of the Mary E in the 1976 Miami-Nassau race. There are also evocative stories of idyllic cruises and places, like Nantucket, Scandinavia, Greece, and the coasts of the United States. Robinson's stories are peopled with a warm, amusing, and frequently dramatic cast of characters, including yachts themselves--ranging from sailing skiffs to large ocean-racing machines, and most things in between--old and new, large and small, in storm and calm. His has been a rich sailing life and his stories tell of it with fascination and inescapable entertainment.

Book excerpt: In 1888, a US Navy sailor begins writing letters to his niece. The letters tell her where he is and what ventures he has gotten himself into. His sailor letters are retrospective, written after things happen. He also must tell her how he got to the place in time he started writing. He is educated for the time, trained as a naval navigator, lighthouse repairman, and watch repairman. His language is as he would speak to his fellow crew—clipped, as sailors use few G sounds, and an apostrophe is used to indicate the word is shortened, as they do. He is honest and kind. He is well trained in sword fighting. His enlistment contract is not the standard form. His mother’s attorney wrote it. The fleet admiral approved it as he had served with the sailor’s uncle. His uncle was a noted ship navigator, shipmaster, an author of navy lore, and now provided ocean metrological data to the naval observatory. He has carried this on. His early experiences involve train travel to San Francisco. The ship charts the then Northwest Territory and the Alaskan coast. His group verifies charts of the Missouri River. Mostly, his ship supplies food provisions to navy frigates in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

Alain Gerbault The Untold Tales of a Sailor at Sea invites you to look behind cruise ship doors and join in one woman's adventures during her life at sea. Lincee Tang decides to celebrate her milestone thirtieth birthday with a vacation cruise which ignites her desire to sail away to many ports of call proudly wearing the uniform in the Entertainment Department. Lincee's story of making memories at sea unveils the hidden truths and untold stories of the sailing crew who work hard to make passengers' ocean journeys enjoyable. Taking hold of her courage to lose sight of the shore, Lincee discovers hidden talents within, forges ahead with resilience in tough situations, and has her chance at romance and love. Discover how removing inhibitions and fear of the unknown can lead to a whole world of possibilities and adventures. Finding growth in unexpected social, emotional and spiritual avenues leads one to explore how it is possible to reach new horizons. "The Sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever." Jacques Cousteau "They that go down to the ship, that do business in great waters, these see the works of the Lord and his wonders in the deep." Psalm 107: 23-24 "You can never cross the ocean unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore." Christopher Columbus

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Give a ship an unlucky name, and it will last throughout the whole of her career. A sailor is proverbially superstitious, and he clings jealously to tradition. It is told that when the frigate Chesapeake was launched she stuck fast on the ways, and did not reach the water until the following day, which was Friday. Although she was a fine vessel to look at, she grounded upon the bar upon her first attempt to sail, and, when once free, behaved herself in such a lubberly fashion that those who witnessed her starting out declared she was bewitched. Even after many changes had been made in the length of her masts, in the weight of spars, and the cut of sails, still she was considered by many a failure. And, although her sailing qualities improved as time went on, yet her bad name stuck to her, as bad names will. Given this drawback, the unlucky captain of such a craft finds it difficult to recruit a proper crew, and must often be content with green hands, or the riffraff disdained by other ships' masters.

The book provides insight into what life was like for young men joining Her Majesty’s Forces at that time and of the journeys that followed during a five-year period. The book takes the reader through basic naval training and to far-flung places visited aboard HMS Albion (RO7) “The Old Grey Ghost”, a 22,000-ton Centaur-class Light Fleet Carrier, until its decommission. The story relays the difficulties and struggles of one young man and his decision to leave a career after moving to shore bases. The book offers a historical perspective of the Royal Navy from the eyes of a rating and a world much different from today.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yankee Ships and Yankee Sailors: Tales of 1812 The incidents made use of in the following pages are historical, or at least authentic some may perhaps come under the head of tradition. Tradi tion is historical rumor; it may be proved by inves tigation to be actual fact, or it may be accepted at its face value, on account of its probability. To inves tigate, one is led to break open and dissect and some times we destroy a wealth of sentiment in the pro ceeding; by casting aside tradition that is harmless we destroy the color of history; we may lose its side lights and shadows that give vividness and beauty to the whole effect. It has not been a spirit of research into the science of history, or a chance for deep delving into figures and records, that has animated the author, although he has drawn upon state papers for material, and all correspondence and important references can be vouched for. He has endeavored to refreshen the colors by removing the dust that may have settled. He has touched the fragile bric - a-brac of tradition with the feather cluster of investigation. There is suflicient excuse for everything that is written in this book. Facts are not lacking to prove much here to be true. It will not confuse our historical knowledge to accept it thus.
