Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Journey Due North: Being Notes of a Residence in Russia I am bound on a stern, long, cruel, rigid journey, far, far away, to the extreme right-hand top corner of the map of Europe - but first Due North. And here I am at Erquellines on the frontier of the king dom of Belgium and this is why I thanked Heaven I was here. Not very far northward is Erquellines; and yet I felt as if I had passed the Rubicon, when a parti-coloured sentry-box, the counterfeit present ment of the peculiarly sheepish-looking Belgian lion sitting on his hind-legs, with the legend Union is strength, (and, indeed, I think it would take a good many of these lions to make a strong one, ) and a posse of custom-house officers - kindly, but pud ding headed in appearance - told me that I was in the Royaume de Belgique. Its total superficial area is estimated at eight millions of square miles, being more than twice the area of the whole of the United States, and comprising all the north of Europe and Asia, and the north-west corner of North America. This immense territory has given to the Russian empire an importance more imaginary than real. For, as with individuals, so with nations, - nothing, to the cursory observer, invests them so much with the appearance of strength as large landed possessions. According to this idea, however, the aborigines of this western world were a very power ful people, for the whole boundless continent was theirs; and, though divided into a great variety of tribes, they were linked together by interests that made them the common foe of the white man. Nevertheless, they melted away, at his approach, like the snows of winter before the summer's sun. Something, therefore. Beside land, is requisite to national strength. Book excerpt: This collection of essays addresses the challenge of modern nationalism to the tsarist Russian Empire. First appearing on the empire’s western periphery this challenge, was most prevalent in twelve provinces extending from Ukrainian lands in the south to the Baltic provinces in the north, as well as to the Kingdom of Poland. At issue is whether the late Russian Empire entered World War I as a multiethnic state with many of its age-old mechanisms run by a multiethnic elite, or as a Russian state predominantly managed by ethnic Russians. The tsarist vision of prioritizing loyalty among all subjects over privileging ethnic Russians and discriminating against non-Russians faced a fundamental problem: as soon as the opportunity presented itself, non-Russians would increase their demands and become increasingly separatist. The authors found that although the imperial government did not really identify with popular Russian nationalism, it sometimes ended up implementing policies promoted by Russian nationalist proponents. Matters addressed include native language education, interconfessional rivalry, the “Jewish question,” the origins of mass tourism in the western provinces, as well as the emergence of Russian nationalist attitudes in the aftermath of the first Russian revolution.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fighting Without a War: An Account of Military Intervention in North Russia This book does not assume to tell the whole story of that expedition. I did not see all of it. No man did. In addition to what I saw, how ever, I had the advantage of meeting constantly men who had seen and been in the various other fights and locations. Under the overstimulat ing circumstances of army life the very air seems full of wild rumors. This was particu larly true in the isolations of the Russian fight ing. I have felt the necessity therefore of exer cising great care not to accept as true uncor roborated army rumors. When it is remembered that the Central Govern ment in St. Petersburg controls an Empire which extends from the Baltic in the West to the Pacific Ocean in the East, to the Arctic Circle in the North, to the Caucasus Mountains, Bokhara, Persia, Turkestan, and Southern Siberia in Asia, there is no room for doubt about the necessity for firm measures. About one hundred and sixty million people claim allegiance to the Tsar, and their number doubles every sixty years. The figures are stupendous, but accurate. There are no less than eight and a half million square miles enclosed within the vast borders of Russian territory. Forests, rivers, and the rich steppes or plains (covered with millions of cattle, horses, sheep, and other animals), go to make up the giant possessions of Nicholas II., the Little Father, as his loyal subjects affectionately call him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Due North: Or Glimpses of Scandinavia and Russia About five years ago, the Author, having then just returned from circumnavigating the globe, was induced to record his experiences of the long journey, which were published in a volume entitled Due West; or, Round the World in Ten Months. The public favor accorded to this work led, a couple of years later, to the issuing of a second volume of travels, upon the Author's return from the West Indies, entitled Due South; or, Cuba, Past and Present. The popular success of both books and the flattering comments of the critics have caused the undersigned to believe that a certain portion of the public is pleased to see foreign lands and people through his eyes; and hence the publication of the volume now in hand. These pages describing the far North, from which the Author has just returned, including Norway, Sweden, Russia, and Russian Poland, - seem naturally to suggest the title of Due North. With.
