Book excerpt: Bittersweet, funny and touching, Larry McMurtry's The Desert Rose is the story of Harmony, a Las Vegas showgirl. At night she's a lead dancer in a gambling casino; during the day she raises peacocks. She's one of a dying breed of dancers, faced with fewer and fewer jobs and an even bleaker future. Yet she maintains a calm cheerfulness in that arid neon landscape of supermarkets, drive-in wedding chapels, and all-night casinos. While Harmony's star is fading, her beautiful, cynical daughter Pepper's is on the rise. But Harmony remains wistful and optimistic through it all. She is the unexpected blossom in the wasteland, the tough and tender desert rose.

When Rose Macklin is asked to help Alec Thurston, the one man she’s ever truly loved, by coming to Palm Desert, California, she doesn’t hesitate. He’s dying of cancer and needs her help overseeing the sale of his hotel, the Desert Sage Inn, to another hotel group. With her marketing skill and as the owner of a very successful blog, she’s his perfect choice to make the sale a smooth transition while ensuring the new owners will maintain the reputation and image of the upscale property after the sale. She arrives to find Alec has summoned two other women to help with the project. Lily Weaver was once Alec’s assistant, and Willow Sanchez was like a daughter to him. They join forces to help him, lovingly accepting his nickname for them—the Desert Flowers, similar to the well-known Charlie’s Angels of TV fame. When Rose is assigned to work alongside Hank Bowers, an independent consultant to the hotel company’s team, she shudders at his reputation as an outgoing guy who always uses sports analogies and is certain they won’t get along. But Alec counsels her to give Hank a chance and, later, as they work together as a team, Rose is left to wonder if falling for one another is part of Alec’s secret plan even if one of Hank’s grown daughters fights the idea. Book excerpt: Jesus Saves - even on the job In October of 1981, the National Training Center at Ft. Irwin, Ca. was opened as a training facility for US Army units. The work force was civilian, government contract employees. This work force was involved in, among other evil and detestable practices, drug use, alcohol use and sex while on the job. It was a playground for Satan and his followers. This is the last place anyone would expect to hear anything about God. But, God soon began a work that would touch the hearts and lives of the extremely Godless people in this place. God turned the Track and Wheel Shops at Ft. Irwin into a mission field. Starting with one man (not the author), God began a revival in the work place that saw many get saved and go on to various ministries and the mission field. This movement eventually grew into a weekly organized Bible Study that is still thriving and seeing lives changed. This book tells the true story of how Jesus came into this place of work and saved people from their despicable, evil lifestyles of sin. Although this story is told from the experience of one person, it could be told multiple times by a number of people with different experiences and testimonies. The accounts of the work which God did there over the years would fill volumes and would contain endless testimonies of how the Lord worked in the lives of all those involved or those whose lives were touched by this work. When I arrived at Ft. Irwin in July, 1982, I was a drunk who neglected my family and only cared for my own evil desires. By the end of 1984 I was saved and living free from alcohol and was not only walking with Jesus but on my way to active ministry work at the job site and in the Church. There are no exaggerations in this book, only the truth of what Jesus did in the lives of me and those around me and beyond. It is a testimony to what the Lord can do if we are open to His work in our lives. Do you take Jesus to work with you? All too often, Christians leave Jesus at home when they go to work. An undercover Christian is unable to reach anyone for Jesus. We need to be ambassadors for Jesus and take the gospel message to the work site and watch as the Lord saves souls. That is what happened at Ft. Irwin, in the Track and Wheel Shops. We were all truly amazed at the work He was able to do simply because we were obedient to His calling. This work of God, which exists among the evil lifestyles of this workforce, truly stands out like a rose in the desert. Take Jesus to work, you will be amazed at His good work habits.

Download or read book Godly Love written by Stephen G. Post and published by Templeton Foundation Press. This book was released on 2008-11-01 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this uplifting new book, author Stephen G. Post explores the mysteries and the wonder of Godly love. This all-important love is personal, unconditional, unlimited, generative, and omnipresent. The title alludes to Isaiah 35, how Godly love is said to plant a rose in our hearts precisely when we feel like a desert with no more love to give. Post draws on his life experiences and works at the Institute for Research on Unlimited Love as he intersperses personal anecdotes with spiritual truths and research on human happiness. In the process, he defines the concept of Godly love and illustrates how important it can be in our lives—not only emotionally and spiritually but physically as well. "Godly love," he writes, "is the only foundation in the universe that we can really lean on." We all have deserts in life, so we all need Godly love. Without it, the downward slide to cynicism, hostility, and cool indifference can be too easy. These meditations on the subject will nurture our confidence in the power of a love greater than our own when we need it most.

John Ruskin, the famous art critic, didn't believe that ladies could paint before he met Lilias. He changed his mind after he met her and believed that if she would give her life to painting she could become the greatest painter of the nineteenth century. Ruskin believed that if she would devote herself to art "she would be the greatest living painter and do things that would be immortal. " He was unhappy that she was spending so much time on the streets of London, helping with the YWCA, when he thought she ought to be painting. Lilias, however, decided to give up her career in art in order to serve God. She always remained a good friend of Ruskin's though, and they wrote many letters when she was in Algeria. She also wrote several books - beautifully illustrated by herself, including: Parables of the Cross (1894), Parables of the Christ-Life (1899), and a book for Sufi Muslims, The Way of the Sevenfold Secret.
