Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Roman Pilgrimage Well, I will have none of that. That is not, to my mind, a true picture of the city of Caesar and Peter, of Brutus and Borgia: so calm and inhuman a mistress would never have won the allegiance of so many periods and religions and temperaments. Rome has the allure of the mountains, the charm of the hills on which she sits, and with which she is girdled: her secret is not some thing which Swallows up the adorer, it is no Nirvana of the spirit or the mind her secret is a jewel for which her admirers must joust, and to whom she will she gives it. All roads lead to Rome yes, but you must get on to a road. And the idler, the false mystic, the Buddhist, the quietist adventures no high road: he lingers, in a keen selfishness, among the meadows of a false philosophy. All roads lead to Rome yes, but you must have the will to move, the passion to achieve, the desire to possess. All roads lead to Rome yes, whether as Christian, or as poet, or as archaeologist, or as aesthete you may go to Rome and you will then reach the treasure of the ages of the heart, the satisfaction of many needs, the solace of sorrow and the deep security of faith. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Pilgrims Progress: From Fair Florence to the Eternal City of Rome A Friend's Apology For this Booke. By Charles G. Leland. Loe! what is this which Ime to sett before ye? It is, I ween, a very pleasant Story, How two young Pilgrimes who the World would see, Did Wheele themselves all over Italy. One meant to write on't, whence it may be said That for the Nonce hers was the Wheelwright's trade; Which is a clever Crafte, for yee have heard What flits about as a familiar Word Which in a Workshopp often meets the Eare, "Bad Wheelwright maketh a good Carpentere." If of a bad one such a Saying's true, Oh what, I pray, may not a good one do? For by Experience I do declare 'Tis easier to make Books than build a Chaire. Experto crede - I have tried them Both, And sweare a Book is easier - on my Oathe! He who with her a Pilgriming did go, - That was her Husband. Book Synopsis The Pilgrimage of the Holy Paula (Classic Reprint) by : St. Jerome
Download or read book The Pilgrimage of the Holy Paula (Classic Reprint) written by St. Jerome and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pilgrimage of the Holy Paula The asceticism advocated, with so much eloquence, by Ambrose at Milan, and Jerome at Rome, during the last quarter of the fourth century, captivated the minds of Christians of all ranks. In Rome itself, where society was at the time under the influence of strong religious excitement, the opinions of Jerome were adopted with enthusiasm. Partly from love of novelty, partly from the striking contrast between the austere life of an ascetic and the dissolute manners of the age, asceticism became the fashion. Many ladies of noble birth, renouncing the pleasures of society, devoted their lives to religious observances, and their Wealth to good works; whilst others wandered off to lead a life of seclusion in lands which had once been hallowed by the presence of Christ, or performed long weary pilgrimages to places which had been the scene of some memorable event in sacred history. Amongst those who had been deeply moved by the preaching of Jerome, were two ladies who afterwards became his most fervent disciples: Paula, a Roman matron of ancient lineage, great wealth, and high social rank; and Eustochium, her daughter, who, if we may believe her spiritual guide, was the first Roman maiden to take upon herself vows of virginity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pilgrimage From the Alps to the Tiber: Or the Influence of Romanism I DID not go to Rome to seek for condemnatory matter against the Pope's government. Had this been my only object, I should not have deemed it necessary to undertake so long a journey. I could have found materials on which to construct a charge in but too great abundance nearer home. The cry of the Papal States had waxed great, and there was no need to go down into those unhappy regions to satisfy one's self that the oppression was altogether according to the cry of it. I had other objects to serve by my journey. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The dens of misery and vice, the hard problems of thought, the blank misgivings of the wanderers amid worlds unrealised, were all shut out from view; and though I was expected, as a matter of form, to say I was a miserable Sinner, it was with the distinct understanding that I was all the more our Prince's darling for saying so.
