This book was released on 2000 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research project is to do a rhetorical analysis of the preaching style of three African-American preachers with application for black homiletics. It seeks to validate the hypothesis that the styles of these three black preachers will reveal transferable principles that can be applied to the preaching style of other preachers. The purpose of the project is embodied in the question, "What makes black preaching style effective as reflected in the preaching of these three men?" In order to test the hypothesis and answer the question, the researcher did the following things: developed a set of interview questions, did on site observation of each preacher, listened to or viewed ten sermons of each preacher and constructed a validation grid consisting of seven elements of style. The seven elements by which the preaching style of the preachers were evaluated are: clarity, interest, imagery, emotion, evocation, appropriateness, and mannerism. The hypothesis affirms that with a certain amount of giftedness and hard work preachers can inculcate the seven elements of style into their preaching.
Book Synopsis A Rhetorical Analysis of the Preaching Style of Three Itinerant Preachers by : Brian Gerard Davis
Download or read book A Rhetorical Analysis of the Preaching Style of Three Itinerant Preachers written by Brian Gerard Davis and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project analyzed the style (the choice and use of words) of three itinerant preachers, Hadedon W. Robinson, Richard Allen Farmer, and Crawford W. Loritts. The effectiveness of theswe preachers is evident in the great demand for them as speakers in a large variety of contexts (i.e., local churches, conventions, conferences, and other special events) and as teachers of homiletics at Christian colleges and/or seminaries. It measured the presense and strength of elements that define style, according to authorities in rhetorical, communicational, and homiletical theory and practice, and thereby answered the question, "What elements comprise an effective preaching style as observed in the style of these three itinerant preachers?" The answer to that question provided essential data for formulating principles that can be applied by other preachers to enhance their own effectivess.

Book Synopsis Preaching the New Testament as Rhetoric by : Tim MacBride
Download or read book Preaching the New Testament as Rhetoric written by Tim MacBride and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-11-05 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the rise of the "New Homiletic" a generation ago, it has been recognized that sermons not only say something to listeners, they also do something. A truly expository sermon will seek not merely to say what the biblical text said, but also to do what the biblical text did in the lives of its original audience. In Preaching the New Testament as Rhetoric, MacBride looks how at the discipline of rhetorical criticism can help preachers discern the function of a New Testament text in its original setting as a means of crafting a sermon that can function similarly in contemporary contexts. Focusing on the letters of Paul, he shows how understanding them in light of Greco-Roman speech conventions can suggest ways by which preachers can communicate not just the content of the letters, but also their function. In this way, the power of the text itself can be harnessed, leading to sermons that inform and, most importantly, transform.
Book Synopsis Preaching the Converted by : Samantha Zacher
Download or read book Preaching the Converted written by Samantha Zacher and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2009-05-16 with total page 1106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vercelli Book is one of the oldest surviving collections of Old English homilies and poems, compiled in England in the tenth century. Preaching the Converted provides a sustained literary analysis of the book's prose homilies and demonstrates that they employ rhetorical techniques commonly associated with vernacular verse. The study argues that the dazzling textual complexity of these homilies rivals the most accomplished examples of Old English poetry. Highlighting the use of word play, verbal and structural repetition, elaborate catalogues, and figurative language, Samantha Zacher's study of the Vercelli Book fills a gap in the history of English preaching by foregrounding the significance of these prose homilies as an intermediary form. Also analyzing the Latin and vernacular sources behind the Vercelli texts to reveal the theological and formal interests informing the collection as a whole, Preaching the Converted is a rigorous examination of Old English homiletic rhetoric and poetics.

Download or read book Structure's Impact on Homiletic Rhetoric written by Erik S. Nelson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the connection between the study of rhetorical processes and the practice of expository preaching is obvious, academic cooperation between the two fields is lacking. This case study presents an example of the harmony achievable between the disciplines through the production of constructive criticism, a process known to communication scholars as rhetorical analysis, for a sample of sermons given by Pastor Melissa Scott in recent years. Scott, whose preaching style is uniquely centered on translation-based exposition, represents the modern pastor whose skill and technique might be improved upon with the implementation of recent and emerging communication theory. Specifically, this study demonstrates the ability of four theories known and taught by communication scholars to dissect the structure of an argument and detect its strengths and weaknesses. After analyzing the sample with the structural concepts behind the Toulmin Model, Monroe's Motivated Sequence, transformative explanation, and metanarration, the research becomes capable of identifying and correcting the common mistakes in Scott's sermons. The most prominent examples of these corrections included providing one's audience with a visualization of successful implementation of one's ideas and, when addressing a paradigm shift, acknowledging the merit of the popular opinion before demonstrating its inadequacy as thoroughly as possible. As a result, this study serves as a display of the usefulness of communication theory to those who preach, in hope that it will spur further interest in its dissemination to today's pastoral rhetors. --Page iv.

Download or read book The Benefits of Socio-rhetorical Analysis for Expository Preaching written by Joseph R. Buchanan and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past twenty years, the field of Biblical studies has witnessed a marked increase in the interest devoted to the subject of socio-rhetorical analysis. Much of the work done one this subject reveals that it has great potential for shedding new light on the Biblical text. However, in order for this type of analysis to reach its maximum value for the church it must be integrated with the field of homiletics. Surprisingly, a review of the literature reveals that little attention has been given to showing how this type of analysis can be incorporated into the ministry expository preaching. The purpose of this project, therefore, is to propose a model for integrating socio-rhetorical analysis into the process of preparing expository sermons and demonstrating its effectiveness through a series of messages preached through the Pauline Prison Epistles at the First Baptist Church, Metropolis, IL.
