The n~ture, permanence and kinetics of this association is, in many cases, unknown yet it is central to any effort concerned with predicting the pathways of pollutant transfer and the fluxes along them. It is often unclear to precisely what surface, if any, a pollutant is attached. The transfer of species between surfaces and solution may be chemically or biochemically controlled. These processes may take place within a host framework which has a time and space dependent structure. The natural straining of this framework resulting from physical and chemical processes moves porewater and the dissolved species in it. Thus, to adequately predict the natural transfer of species within a cohesive sediment system the physical, biochemical and chemical processes must be dynamically coupled. This informal colloquium examined topics relevant to the associ ation of pollutant and sediment. These included the mineral particle surfaces and the surrounding ionic associations, methods of describing the particles and the physical, chemical, biochemical and biological processes operating in association with fine sediment substrates. The physical processes of sediment transport were deliberately excluded.

The general goal of this project is to investigate how forcing processes (e.g., tidal asymmetry) cause sediment transport that imports fine-grained sediment to form the mud-flat environment with its complex morphology (e.g., multiple scales of tidal channels and different elevations of flats). This project investigates processes that transfer fine-grained sediment within and between channels and flats in intertidal settings, and relates them to the temporary and longer-term deposits found in those environments - when, why and how do suspended sediments transfer from the loose, unconsolidated (possibly fluid mud) deposits to and from the flat environments. Specifically, we are trying to answer the question: What role do tidal (diurnal, and spring/neap), riverine and other seasonal (winds/waves, temperature, and biological glue) processes have on the transfer of sediment between the flats and channels and within the channels and how is this manifested in terms of channel and flat deposits (temporary and longer).

Book excerpt: In 1973 a study was initiated on the environmental impacts of dredging and aquatic disposal operations in San Francisco Bay. One part of this study was a program to determine the movement and recirculation of dredged materials after their aquatic disposal. The movement and circulation of sediments in San Francisco Bay result from the complex interactions of tidal flows, wind-wave resuspension and recirculation and variations of freshet conditions with associated sediment loads, stratification, and shifting of nodal point. A program was instituted to physically trace the movement of dredged materials with the objective of quantifying the horizontal and vertical recirculation of the dredged sediment. Tracing was accomplished by tagging Bay sediments with iridium, neutron-activating sediment samples collected from an extensive test area, and using gamma-ray spectrometry to determine the quantity of iridium and hence the amount of dredged material present. This technique was successfully proven. Although somewhat expensive, iridium was found to be the most cost-effective chemical element for tagging and tracing sediments for the conditions existing in San Francisco Bay. With the neutron activation process, however, other chemical elements can definitely be used and may be more cost-effective for tracing dredged sediments elsewhere.

Book excerpt: Due to climate change, sea level rise and anthropogenic development, coastal communities have been facing increasing threats from flooding, land loss, and deterioration of water quality, to name just a few. Most of these pressing problems are directly or indirectly associated with the transport of cohesive fine-grained sediments that form porous aggregates of particles, called flocs. Through their complex structures, flocs are vehicles for the transport of organic carbon, nutrients, and contaminants. Most coastal/estuarine models neglect the flocculation process, which poses a considerable limitation of their predictive capability. We describe a set of experimental and numerical tools that represent the state-of-the-art and can, if combined properly, yield answers to many of the aforementioned issues. In particular, we cover floc measurement techniques and strategies for grain-resolving simulations that can be used as an accurate and efficient means to generate highly-resolved data under idealized conditions. These data feed into continuum models in terms of population balance equations to describe the temporal evolution of flocs. The combined approach allows for a comprehensive investigation across the scales of individual particles, turbulence and the bottom boundary layer to gain a better understanding of the fundamental dynamics of flocculation and their impact on fine-grained sediment transport.
