Book Synopsis Biology of Termites: a Modern Synthesis by : David Edward Bignell
Download or read book Biology of Termites: a Modern Synthesis written by David Edward Bignell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-20 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biology of Termites, a Modern Synthesis brings together the major advances in termite biology, phylogenetics, social evolution and biogeography. In this new volume, David Bignell, Yves Roisin and Nathan Lo have brought together leading experts on termite taxonomy, behaviour, genetics, caste differentiation, physiology, microbiology, mound architecture, biogeography and control. Very strong evolutionary and developmental themes run through the individual chapters, fed by new data streams from molecular sequencing, and for the first time it is possible to compare the social organisation of termites with that of the social Hymenoptera, focusing on caste determination, population genetics, cooperative behaviour, nest hygiene and symbioses with microorganisms. New chapters have been added on termite pheromones, termites as pests of agriculture and on destructive invasive species.
Book Synopsis Termites and Sustainable Management by : Md. Aslam Khan
Download or read book Termites and Sustainable Management written by Md. Aslam Khan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-01 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This termite Volume 2 comprises 13 chapters in an attempt to bring all available information on sustainable and eco-friendly termite management. The previous Volume considered the biology, social behaviour and economic importance of these insects. Chapters in this book dealing with damage and specific management of fungus-growing termites provide a review on most recent methodologies used for management. Termite damage crops from sowing till harvest. As it is difficult to detect damages in field, usually it is too late when the symptoms are noticed. A separate chapter on issues related to Indian agriculture and the contemporary practices being followed by majority of the Indian farmers is quite informative. Similarly, a case study for termites infesting Malaysian forests constitutes an important contribution. Various issues related to integrated and eco-friendly termite management in tropical conditions have been addressed comprehensively. Potential role of microbes has also been discussed in detail in other chapters. The information contained under these chapters should help termite management in a way that natural resources can be used and maintained for the generations to come. Similarly, the chapter on physical barriers contributes a wealth of information that can be useful all over the world where termite is a problem. Emphasis has been laid on reviewing contribution of synthetic chemical insecticides in termite management. A separate chapter dealing with standard norms in wood protection constitute a significant step in this direction. A further chapter throws light on the potential of biotechnology as a tool in management..

Book Synopsis A Bibliography of Termite Literature, 1966-1978 by : Dr. E. Ernst
Download or read book A Bibliography of Termite Literature, 1966-1978 written by Dr. E. Ernst and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1986 with total page 918 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up to 1965, termite literature was covered by T.E. Synder's bibliographies produced by the Smithsoniam Institution but since his death these have ceased and there has been no one source of information for termitologists. This has now been remedied by Termite Abstracts, which begun publication in 1980. The present book links the missing years 1966 - 1978, and contains 3 165 entries covering termite biology, control, distribution and taxonomy. The references are annotated and abstracted to provide as complete a source of information as possible for scientists working overseas, without access to good libraries. Termites cause such damage to crops that the book will not only be of use to specialistentomologists, but also crop protection and forestry specialists, plant quarantine inspectors and building research technologists.

Book Synopsis Ecology and Biogeography in India by : M.S. Mani
Download or read book Ecology and Biogeography in India written by M.S. Mani and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 809 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the outstanding features of the ecology and bio geography of the Indian region, comprising former British India, Nepal, Bhutan, Ceylon and Burma. It summarizes the results of nearly four decades' studies and field explorations and discussions with students on the distribution of plants and animals, practically throughout this vast area and on the underlying factors. A number of specialists in geology, meteorology, botany, zoology, ecology and anthropology have also actively collaborated with me and have contributed valuable chapters in their respective fields. India has an exceptionally rich and highly diversified flora and fauna, exhibiting complex composition, character and affinities. Although the fauna of the Indian region as a whole is less completely known than its flora, we are nevertheless fairly well acquainted with at least the salient features of its faunal characters to enable us to present a meaningful discussion on some of the outstanding peculiarities of the biogeography of India. A general synthesis of the available, though much scattered, information should prove useful to future students of biogeography throughout the world.

Book Synopsis Termites and Sustainable Management by : Md. Aslam Khan
Download or read book Termites and Sustainable Management written by Md. Aslam Khan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Volume comprises 12 chapters in an attempt to bring available information on biology, social behavour and economic importance of termites. Chapters in this book dealing with termites identification provide a review on most updated information of their systematics. Ecologically, termites interact with living and non-living surroundings and deliver a wide range of behaviors. In a separate chapter termites ecology is examined and explored. Termites depend on their gut microbes for digestion of complex polysaccharides of wood into simpler molecules. Information provided on termite gut microbiome and lignocellulose degradation constitutes an important contribution. Termite biology and social behaviour have been addressed comprehensively. Trail pheromones are responsible for the orientation and recruitment of nestmates to the food sources. Once arriving at a potential food source, termites assess its quality using a different set of cues. A separate chapter on trail pheromones, cues used during foraging and food assessment, with preferences for foraging sites, contributes a wealth of information. Emphasis has been given on reviewing ecological benefits of termites in other chapters. The information with respect to termite species as an edible insect and the overall role it plays in food and nutrition security in Africa is quite informative. A separate chapter dealing with importance of termites and termitaria in mineral exploration constitutes a significant step in addressing the economic importance of this insect group.
