Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Review of Pierce's Administration: Showing Its Only Popular Measures to Have Originated With the Executive of Millard Fillmore The administration of Franklin Pierce is the subject of the chapters in this work. Had it been marked only by ordinary events, the writer would never have undertaken the task of reviewing it. But, as it has been one of the most extraordinary in its acts and policy which has characterized the annals of our country, and as history is philosophy teaching by experience, a true analysis and exposition of the principal acts of the administration have been deemed of paramount import ance, not only for the instruction and benefit of the present generation, but for statesmen and the rising generation who may come after us. The political friends of the administration will do injustice if they ascribe the motives of the writer to personal interest, or prejudice, or to any feelings of partisan zeal. The acts of the administration speak for themselves; they are written in capitals broad as the republic, and conspicuous as the sun in the firmament; - they tell their own tale! Some may think that it is not the province of a woman to enter on the rough path of a political critic, or to presume to discuss subjects which belong to the other sex. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, segments of white Americans have let racist paranoia supersede judicious reasoning throughout our history. The 2016 Presidential election in the United States brought the Know-Nothing’s back from the hidden depths of our history books. This book provides a historical account of the Know-Nothing Party in the 1850s through their reemergence in the 21st century with the election of Donald Trump. Analyzing the anti-immigration and anti-Catholic rhetoric of the Know-Nothing movement and tracing that same rhetoric in George Wallace's American Independent Party in the '60s, up into its appearance in the Trump movement, this book provides a guide for understanding the 2016 Republican Party agenda through its inheritance from the Know-Nothing Movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lincolns Loyal Lady: Anna Ella Carroll, a Brief The story of Abraham Lincolns female kitchen cabinet member?a formidable, trailblazing woman?is a tale some dont want to be told. Anna Ella Carroll broke all the rules for a woman of the Civil War era. A politician, pamphleteer, adviser to President Lincoln, and military secret agent, Carroll operated in the highest political and government circles for more than a quarter of a century. Washington, DC, the White House, May 12, 1862 I will tell you what Mr. Lincoln said of you last night. Miss Anna Ella Carroll is the head of the Carroll race, and when the history of this war is written, she will stand a good bit taller than ever old Charles [Carroll] did. Rep. William Mitchell (R-Ind.), 13 May 1862 The Hon. Benjamin F. Wade, former chairman, Committee on the Conduct of the War, May 10, 1876, House Misc. Doc. 58, May 18, 1878, p. 24: In the very last interview with Mr. Stanton, just before his death, he referred to your [Carrolls] services . . . in the strongest terms he could express, and . . . stated that if his life should be spared, he would discharge the great duty of seeing your services to the country properly recognized and rewarded. Your claim is righteous and just, if ever there was one and, for the honor of my country, I trust and hope that you will be suitably rewarded, and so declared before the world. Lucinda B. Chandler, Anna Ella Carroll: The Great Unrecognized Military Genius of the War of Rebellion, Godeys Magazine, 1896 Can we afford to leave in the archive of our history only this record of ineffable meanness and ingratitude? Kay Larsons insightful account of the contributions made to our nation by Anna Ella Carroll redresses a major inequity in the historiography of nineteenth-century America. Col. James S. Wheeler, professor of history retired, US Military Academy, West Point, New York

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One hundred and fifty years after Kansas was admitted to the Union, we still find ourselves fascinated by the specter of "Bleeding Kansas" and the violence that preceded the American Civil War by five years. Although ample attention has been devoted to understanding why territorial violence broke out in Kansas in 1856, of equal concern but less illuminated is the question of why government, both local and national, allowed the violence to continue unstanched for so long. This question is fundamentally about governance-its existence, exercise, limits, and continuance-and its study has ramifications for understanding both Kansas events and why the American experiment in government failed in 1861. In addition, the book also sheds light on the nature of democracy, the challenges of implanting it in distant environs, the necessity of cooperation at the various levels of government, and the value of strong leadership. To Govern the Devil in Hell uses the prism of governance to investigate what went wrong in territorial Kansas. From the first elections in late 1854 and early 1855, local government was tarnished with cries of illegitimacy that territorial officials could not ameliorate. Soon after, a shadow government was created which further impeded local management of territorial challenges. Ultimately, this book addresses why Presidents Franklin Pierce and James Buchanan failed to act, what hindered Congress from stepping into the void, and why and how the lack of effective governance harmed Kansas and later the United States.
