Book excerpt: An important function of the Air Infiltration Centre, Bracknell, Berkshire, Great Britain, is to keep research organizations informed of on-going research into air infiltration in buildings. To fulfill this need, the Centre regularly undertakes a worldwide survey of current research. In this report, the results of the Centre's most recent survey, completed in 1983, are used to provide a background to present European airtightness and air infiltration measurement practices. A wide range of research activities are summarized involving the use of both pressurization and tracer gas techniques. In addition, the increasing effort being devoted to the measurement of air infiltration in nondomestic buildings is emphasized. Other topics covered include ventilation efficiency measurements and multitracer air movement studies.

Book excerpt: Containing the proceedings of the latest in a series of conferences on the emerging topic of eco-architecture, this book presents the newest research in the field. Eco-architecture requires that buildings be in harmony with nature, including their immediate environs. Locations, siting and orientation, as well as the materials used, should be chosen based on ecological appropriateness. Practitioners make every effort to minimize the use of energy at each stage of a building's life cycle, including that embodied in the extraction and/or fabrication as well as the transportation of the materials used and their assembly into the building. There is even consideration given to the ease and value of changing use of a building and component recycling when the building's life is over. Designers may also carefully control the energy required for building maintenance, not to mention lighting, heating and cooling, especially when the energy consumed is related to greenhouse gas emissions. Passive energy systems such as natural ventilation, summer shading and winter solar heat gain also play a role, as do alternative sources of energy for heat and electricity, e.g. solar and wind power.Papers presented cover topics such as: Ecological and cultural sensitivity; Design by passive systems ; Life cycle assessment; Quantifying sustainability in architecture; Resource and rehabilitation; Building technologies; Ecological impact of materials; Durability of materials; Adapted reuse ; Carbon neutral design ; Education and training; Case studies; New architecture frontiers; Art and kraft; Quality in architecture; Temporary architecture; Selection.

Book excerpt: During the last two decades, outdoor air pollution has decreased in the United States and in many other industrial nations. But many hazardous pollutants have been found in offices, cars, homes, and hospitals. Outbreaks of illness related to the noninjdustrial work environment have been reported with increasing frequency. And "sick-building," or "tight-building," syndrome has been recognized as a new and serious threat to public health. Indoor Air Pollution: A Health Perspective outlines current research on the subject and examines effotrs to regulate the quality of indoor air. Contributors—including epidemiologists, clinicians, risk assessorsm experts in air monitoring, microbiologies, and engineers—discuss methodologies used in measuring exposures to pollution, strategies for imporving indoor air quality, and other issues. They also assess the health effects of specific pollutants: tobacco smoke, carbon monoxide, wood smoke, nitrogen dioxide, biological agents, formaldehyde, and radon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy efficiency in buildings requires, among other things, that ventilation be appropriately dimensioned: too much ventilation wastes energy, and insufficient ventilation leads to poor indoor air quality and low comfort.Studies have shown that ventilation systems seldom function according to their commissioned design. They have also shown that airflow measurement results are essential in improving a ventilation system. This key handbook explains why ventilation in buildings should be measured and describes how to measure it, giving applied examples for each measurement method. The book will help building physicists and ventilation engineers to properly commission ventilation systems and appropriately diagnose ventilation problems throughout the life of a building. Drawing on over 20 years of experience and the results of recent international research projects, this is the definitive guide to diagnosing airflow patterns within buildings.

Book excerpt: This paper reviews the state of the art in the measurement of ventilation and air infiltration. It considers tracer gas techniques and discusses some of the tracer gases used as well as some of the potential sources of error. It also discusses fan pressurization-evacuation procedures for measuring building tightness and compares fan and tracer measurements. It discusses the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) crack method. It also considers a number of factors influencing infiltration rates and finally reviews a few of the empirical equations that have been developed to correlate infiltration rate with wind velocity and inside-outside temperature difference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People live in indoor environment about 90% of lifetime and an adult inhales about 15 kg air each day, over 75% of the human body’s daily mass intake (air, food, water). Therefore, indoor air quality (IAQ) is very important to human health. This book provides the basic knowledge of IAQ and highlights the research achievements in the past two decades. It covers the following 12 sections: introduction, indoor air chemicals, indoor air particles, measurement and evaluation, source/sink characteristics, indoor chemistry, human exposure to indoor pollutants, health effects and health risk assessment, IAQ and cognitive performance, standards and guidelines, IAQ control, and air quality in various indoor environments. It provides a combination of an introduction to various aspects on IAQ studies, the current state-of-knowledge, various advances and the perspective of IAQ studies. It will be very helpful for the researchers and technicians in the IAQ and the related fields. It is also useful for experts in other fields and general readers who want to obtain a basic understanding of and research advances in the field of IAQ. A group of experts in IAQ research have been recruited to write the chapters. Their research interests and experience cover the scope of the book. In addition, some experienced experts in IAQ field have been invited as advisors or reviewers to give their comments, suggestions and revisions on the handbook framework and the chapter details. Their contribution guarantees the quality of the book. We are very grateful to them. Last but not least, we express our heartfelt thanks to Prof. Spengler, Harvard University, for writing the foreword of the current Handbook of Indoor Air Quality both as a pioneer scientist who contributed greatly to indoor air science and as an Editor-in-chief of Handbook of Indoor Air Quality 2001, 1st ed. New York: McGraw-Hill. In addition to hard copies, the book is also published online and will be updated by the authors as needed to keep it aligned with current knowledge. These salient features can make the handbook fresh with the research development.

Book excerpt: The provision of an adequate supply of uncontaminated air suitable for the needs of the occupants is an important aspect of building design and construction. Ventilation can be promoted by natural or artificial forces, and it is necessary to understand this process since it affects both the energy consumption and the internal environment of a building. Ventilation is a complex process which is influenced by a variety of constructional, behavioral, and environmental parameters.

Book excerpt: Ensuring optimum ventilation performance is a vital part of building design. Prepared by recognized experts from Europe and the US, and published in association with the International Energy Agency's Air Infiltration and Ventilation Centre (AIVC), this authoritative work provides organized, classified and evaluated information on advances in the key areas of building ventilation, relevant to all building types. Complexities in airflow behaviour, climatic influences, occupancy patterns and pollutant emission characteristics make selecting the most appropriate ventilation strategy especially difficult. Recognizing such complexities, the editors bring together expertise on each key issue. From components to computer tools, this book offers detailed coverage on design, analysis and performance, and is an important and comprehensive publication in this field. Building Ventilation will be an invaluable reference for professionals in the building services industry, architects, researchers (including postgraduate students) studying building service engineering and HVAC, and anyone with a role in energy-efficient building design.
