Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature on pillar design in mining was reviewed to identify methods proposed for use in evaporites that might be adapted for the application. Since the majority of empirical design formulae were developed from observations in coal mines and involve the width and height of the pillar and constants related to the strength of the coal mass, a survey of salt and potash mines was conducted to establish a relevant data base of pillar design and pillar performance. This information, augmented by some case histories from the literature, was used to test the applicability of several of the empirical design methods. Applicable rock mass strength constants were determined for evaporite pillar design using the equations of Holland and Bieniawski, in addition to one new relationship. The Canadian Salt Co. mine at Pugwash, Nova Scotia was used to test the proposed design formula. A series of convergence stations was established in the mine to assess the stability of existing pillars.

Book excerpt: "A study of pillar and roof span performance in stone mines that are located in the Eastern and Midwestern United States showed that various stability issues can be addressed by appropriate pillar and roof span design. Pillars can be impacted by rock joints, large angular discontinuities and can exhibit rib spalling at elevated stresses. Thin weak beds in the pillars, although rare, can have a significant impact by reducing pillar strength. If the roof strata are bedded, beam deflection and buckling can result in roof failure. The roof can also be impacted by large discontinuities and the effects of horizontal stress. A pillar design procedure is proposed that takes into consideration the rock strength, pillar dimensions and the potential impact of large angular discontinuities. Based on the proposed pillar design procedure and the observed performance of pillars in stone mines, a safety factor of at least 1.8 is recommended for pillar design. A lower limit pillar width-to-height ratio of 0.8 is also recommended. Designs that fall outside these limits have an elevated risk of instability and further investigation by rock engineering specialists is required. A roof span design procedure is also proposed that systematically addresses each of the main stability issues. The procedure focuses on selecting an appropriate mining horizon and mining direction. The importance of the thickness of the first bed in the roof and the likelihood for added rock bolting is described. Layout modifications are described that can be made to reduce the incidence of horizontal-stress-related instability. Both the pillar design and roof span guidelines require that a good understanding be obtained of the geotechnical characteristics of the formation being mined. The essential data are the uniaxial compressive strength of the rock, characteristics of the discontinuities and the rock mass classification. Knowledge of the magnitude and orientation of the stress field can assist in orienting the layout appropriately. The design procedures are based on observation of the actual performance of pillars and roof spans in stone mines within the Eastern and Midwestern United States. The guidelines should only be used for design under similar geotechnical conditions."--NIOSHTIC-2

Pillar and roof span stability are two essential prerequisites for safe working conditions in room-and-pillar mines. Unstable pillars can result in rock sloughing from the pillar and can lead to the collapse of the roof if one or more pillars should fail. In addition, the roof span between pillars must be stable to provide safe access to the working areas. Falls of ground from the roof and pillar ribs account for about 15% of all lost working days in underground stone mines [MSHA 2009]. In the past, pillar and roof span dimensions were largely based on experience at nearby mines, developed through trial and error or designed on a case-by-case basis by rock engineering specialists. This document presents the results of research conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in cooperation with participating underground stone mines to develop generally applicable guidelines for designing stable pillars and roof spans in stone mines.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents a logical design methodology for coal mine extraction optimization under massive sandstone roof as developed though a case study analysis of the Quinsam Coal 4 South mine, a shallow underground room and pillar mine with a massive sandstone roof. This research is intended to guide Quinsam Coal and other coal mines globally in efforts to develop or optimize coal extraction and address the geomechanical challenges presented by massive sandstone roof. In this thesis, the tools required to facilitate effective site characterization, ground support design, excavation stability, pillar design, environmental risk management and mining method optimization are presented, as part of a comprehensive design methodology. Guidelines for pillar design are presented based on software assisted gravity-wedge analysis, and review of empirical and analytical design methods. Tools for addressing temporal change in pillar size, shape and stress as well as pillar jointing effects are provided. Pillars are designed to accommodate stresses and strains arising from the known range of overburden depths. An optimized non-caving checkerboard partial pillar extraction method is presented to mitigate environmental risk, address the poor and unpredictable caving mechanics of the massive sandstone roof and provide adequate coal extraction. Modeling of in-line pillar mining and checkerboard partial pillar mining methods was completed with ExamineTAB, a pseudo-3D displacement discontinuity program in support of checkerboard partial pillar mining. Instructional training is required with any modification in mining methods or conditions to apprise the underground workforce on the technical details of the mine design and the importance of adhering to the standards thereof. Using this research work and analysis of the 4 South mine as a backdrop, the design of coal mines under massive sandstone roof is facilitated. The application of the design methodology to the 4 South mine illustrate.
