Book excerpt: The report is a discussion of NDI methods for detecting concealed cracks with emphasis on crack detection under fasteners and painted and plated surfaces. Many methods are considered. They are classified as: recommended, potentially applicable, and inapplicalbe. The recommended methods are ultrasonic and eddy current. They are now field applicable. An ultrasonic method can be immediately applied to detecting cracks under fasteners and plated and painted surfaces. Eddy currents can be used to detect cracks that have propagated beyond fastener heads, in fastener holes (after removal of fasteners) and under protective surfaces. Between the two they should allow inspection of most geometries of interest. (Author).

This book was released on 1971 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of a research study devoted to exploratory development of a non-destructive method for crack detection are reported. The method investigated is based upon and Acoustic Impact Technique (AIT), which consists of the analysis of the vibrations in the test specimens produced by mechanical pulses. Specimens of 6061-T6 aluminum and D6ac steel were fatigue while their acoustic impact responses were measured in order to correlate their AIT responses with the beginning and growth of cracks. In several instances the beginning of subsurface defects that could only be verified by metallographic examination were indicated by the AIT measurements. The influence of metallurgical conditions upon the Acoustic Impact Technique was investigated. Specimens of 4340 steel and 2024 aluminum, having various metallurgical treatments, were AIT tested and their signal responses analyzed. Fatigue tests made on 1020 steel and 6Al-4V titanium specimens showed a common pattern in the function: Bending Fatigue Cycles vs AIT Signal Responses. (Author).

This book was released on 1968 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of a research study devoted to exploratory development of a nondestructive method for crack detection are reported in this document, covering the period from June 1967 to July 1968. The method investigated is based upon an acoustic impact technique, which consists of the analysis of the vibrations in the test specimens produced by mechanical pulses. Frequency shifts and damping times were the primary factors evaluated. Some theoretical concepts are discussed in this report.

Book excerpt: Results of a research study devoted to exploratory development of a nondestructive method for crack detection are reported. The method investigated is based upon an Acoustic Impact Technique (AIT), which consists of the analysis of the vibrations in the test specimens produced by mechanical pulses. The 'time-to-damp' of these vibrations was the primary factor evaluated. General design considerations for the test probes are discussed. The possibility of improving the accuracy and sensitivity of the AIT by a Damping Decrement Computer was investigated and a breadboard model constructed. Fatigue crack investigations were performed and the AIT-measurements correlated with fatigue cycles, crack detection and crack growth. The test results presented indicate that changes in the material are detected before a microscopic crack can be observed on the surface of the fatigue sample. During a fatigue life time test on a specimen with Taper-Lok fasteners, cracks in the hole walls were indicated by the AIT and later verified after removing the fasteners. Tests on adhesively bonded interfaces in honeycomb, dual and multilayer assemblies proved that defects can be detected with the AIT and that the spatial location and the nature of defects can be determined through use of the appropriate frequencies.
