This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This conference proceeding (Sessions on "Otherness in Space and Architecture", International Medieval Conference, Leeds, 2017 and 2018) is a compilation of articles written by both young and senior scholars, who are working on the question of the 'self' and the 'other' in Christian, Jewish and Islamic cultures. The articles examine how material, 'oriental' objects and knowledge originating in non-Western communities helped building and strengthening the identity of Iberia's, southern France and northern Italian nobility and its lineages. It is shown how, in the perception of Christians, the public image of Jews and Moslems became constructed as that of adversaries, while their cultural knowledge, at the same time, would be integrated into Christian culture in a paradox manner, in which the 'self' necessarily depends on the 'other' and how visual tensions in art and space have been used as symbols of power.

Book Synopsis Gangraena and the Struggle for the English Revolution by : Ann Hughes
Download or read book Gangraena and the Struggle for the English Revolution written by Ann Hughes and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2004-09-23 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive study of Gangraena, an intemperate anti-sectarian polemic written by a London Presbyterian Thomas Edwards and published in three parts in 1646. These books, which bitterly opposed any moves to religious toleration, were the most notorious and widely debated texts in a Revolution in which print was crucial to political moblization. They have been equally important to later scholars who have continued the lively debate over the value ofGangraena as a source for the ideas and movements its author condemned. This study includes a thorough assessment of the usefulness of Edwards's work as a historical source, but goes beyond this to provide a wide-ranging discussion of the importance of Gangraena in its own right as a lively work of propaganda, crucial to Presbyterian campaigning in the mid-1640s.Contemporary and later readings of this complex text are traced through a variety of methods, literary and historical, with discussions of printed responses, annotations and citation. Hughes's work thus provides a vivid and convincing picture of revolutionary London and a reappraisal of the nature of 1640s Presbyterianism, too often dismissed as conservative. Drawing on the newer histories of the book and of reading, Hughes explores the influence of Edwards's distasteful but compellingbook.
Book Synopsis Foreign Policy in the Twenty-First Century by : Christopher Hill
Download or read book Foreign Policy in the Twenty-First Century written by Christopher Hill and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-02 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years since 9/11, followed by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, public attention the world over has been on foreign policy. From the United States to Yemen, from China to Venezuela, the quality of the decisions taken by politicians and diplomats has been under the closest scrutiny. What is more, with the increased personal mobility created by globalization, many individuals and groups now focus as much on international events as on affairs within their own state. Diasporas, company managers, humanitarian volunteers and other non-state actors are aware of the necessity for effective diplomacy to secure the outcomes they hope for. This revised and retitled new edition of the author's acclaimed The Changing Politics of Foreign Policy provides the concepts and analysis needed to make sense of contemporary developments in this key site of political action. It provides a clear and engaging synthesis of what foreign policy means in the twenty-first century and shows how it can vary according to regime, level of development and geopolitical position. Stressing the interplay between context and shared dilemmas, it examines how actors – including the many non- and sub-state entities which have developed international strategies – engage, and attempt to manage their differences, within a network of complex multilateral relationships. Written by a leading scholar of international renown, this new edition has been updated throughout, with particular attention given to contemporary issues such as soft power, transnational security challenges and the role of regional actors such as the European Union. New to this Edition: - Substantially revised and updated new edition of an extremely influential, acclaimed and widely used foreign policy text - Updated coverage of events and theory

Download or read book Discourse on History, Law, and Governance in the Public Career of John Selden, 1610-1635 written by Paul Christianson and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Christianson analyses the relevant books and public speeches of Selden from 1610 to 1635 as a means of understanding the genesis of constitutional conflict in seventeenth-century England. He discusses Selden's early histories of English and European institutions, showing how Selden's interpretations changed over time in relation to his scholarship, his politics, and his view of the English constitution as a 'mixed monarchy.' Christianson also analyses Selden's historical method and demonstrates how Titles of Honor (1631) provided his most mature scholarly portrayal of European constitutions and how Mare Clausum marked his first major move toward a natural law theory of politics.
