Book excerpt: Abstract: "A relation between stabilized finite element methods and the Galerkin method employing interpolations with bubble functions is established for the advective-diffusive model and for the linearized compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The bubble functions are shown to help in stabilizing the advective operator without recourse to upwinding or any other numerical strategy. In particular, for the advective-diffusive model, the Galerkin method employing piecewise linears with bubble functions is shown to be equivalent to the Streamline-Upwind/Petrov- Galerkin (SUPG) method in the diffusive limit."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complex multiscale systems such as combined free or porous flow regimes and transport processes governed by combined diffusion, convection and reaction mechanisms, which cannot be readily modeled using traditional methods, can be solved by multiscale or stabilized finite element schemes. Due to the importance of the described multiscale processes in applications such as separation processes, reaction engineering and environmental systems analysis, a sound knowledge of such methods is essential for many researchers and design engineers who wish to develop reliable solutions for industrially relevant problems. The main scope of this book is to provide an authoritative description of recent developments in the field of finite element analysis, with a particular emphasis on the multiscale finite element modeling of transport phenomena and flow problem.

It is targeted at researchers, from those just starting out up to practitioners with some experience. Part I is devoted to the beginners who are already familiar with elementary calculus. Precise concepts of the finite element method remitted in the field of analysis of fluid flow are stated, starting with spring structures, which are most suitable to show the concepts of superposition/assembling. Pipeline system and potential flow sections show the linear problem. The advection–diffusion section presents the time-dependent problem; mixed interpolation is explained using creeping flows, and elementary computer programs by FORTRAN are included. Part II provides information on recent computational methods and their applications to practical problems. Theories of Streamline-Upwind/Petrov–Galerkin (SUPG) formulation, characteristic formulation, and Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) formulation and others are presented with practical results solved by those methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces readers to one of the first methods developed for the numerical treatment of boundary value problems on polygonal and polyhedral meshes, which it subsequently analyzes and applies in various scenarios. The BEM-based finite element approaches employs implicitly defined trial functions, which are treated locally by means of boundary integral equations. A detailed construction of high-order approximation spaces is discussed and applied to uniform, adaptive and anisotropic polytopal meshes. The main benefits of these general discretizations are the flexible handling they offer for meshes, and their natural incorporation of hanging nodes. This can especially be seen in adaptive finite element strategies and when anisotropic meshes are used. Moreover, this approach allows for problem-adapted approximation spaces as presented for convection-dominated diffusion equations. All theoretical results and considerations discussed in the book are verified and illustrated by several numerical examples and experiments. Given its scope, the book will be of interest to mathematicians in the field of boundary value problems, engineers with a (mathematical) background in finite element methods, and advanced graduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mastering modelling, and in particular numerical models, is becoming a crucial and central question in modern computational mechanics. Various tools, able to quantify the quality of a model with regard to another one taken as the reference, have been derived. Applied to computational strategies, these tools lead to new computational methods which are called "adaptive". The present book is concerned with outlining the state of the art and the latest advances in both these important areas. Papers are selected from a Workshop (Cachan 17-19 September 1997) which is the third of a series devoted to Error Estimators and Adaptivity in Computational Mechanics. The Cachan Workshop dealt with latest advances in adaptive computational methods in mechanics and their impacts on solving engineering problems. It was centered too on providing answers to simple questions such as: what is being used or can be used at present to solve engineering problems? What should be the state of art in the year 2000? What are the new questions involving error estimators and their applications?

Book excerpt: The book provides a survey of numerical methods for acoustics, namely the finite element method (FEM) and the boundary element method (BEM). It is the first book summarizing FEM and BEM (and optimization) for acoustics. The book shows that both methods can be effectively used for many other cases, FEM even for open domains and BEM for closed ones. Emphasis of the book is put on numerical aspects and on treatment of the exterior problem in acoustics, i.e. noise radiation.
