Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Rejoinder to the Princeton Review, Upon the Elohim Revealed, Touching the Doctrine of Imputation and Kindred Topics On the other hand I hold, That it was necessary for the Son of God to assume human nature by generation, so as to be one with our race, and so subject to the law of God for our sins; whilst being begotten by the power of the Holy Ghost, and not by ordinary generation, he was free from the sinfulness of our nature. That the believer is, by the communication-to him of the Holy Spirit, dwelling in and proceeding from Christ, united to him in a real union, expressed by the scriptures as being 'members of his body, of his flesh and of his bones, ' &c. That this identity it is which entitles the believer to claim Christ's righteous ness as his, by virtue of which he is justified at the bar of God. That hence it follows, that whilst the plan of salvation thus wrought is altogether gratuitous, and hence of mere grace, - ou the other hand, as by the wonderful working of that free grace we are engrafted into Christ, and he is made our Head, the law being satisfied, we may with reverent boldness and adoring gratitude make the plea at the bar of justice of N ot guilty, ' since Christ and all he has done is, not only putatively, but, by free grace uniting us, really ours.
