Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Rejoinder to the Princeton Review, Upon the Elohim Revealed, Touching the Doctrine of Imputation and Kindred Topics On the other hand I hold, That it was necessary for the Son of God to assume human nature by generation, so as to be one with our race, and so subject to the law of God for our sins; whilst being begotten by the power of the Holy Ghost, and not by ordinary generation, he was free from the sinfulness of our nature. That the believer is, by the communication-to him of the Holy Spirit, dwelling in and proceeding from Christ, united to him in a real union, expressed by the scriptures as being 'members of his body, of his flesh and of his bones, ' &c. That this identity it is which entitles the believer to claim Christ's righteous ness as his, by virtue of which he is justified at the bar of God. That hence it follows, that whilst the plan of salvation thus wrought is altogether gratuitous, and hence of mere grace, - ou the other hand, as by the wonderful working of that free grace we are engrafted into Christ, and he is made our Head, the law being satisfied, we may with reverent boldness and adoring gratitude make the plea at the bar of justice of N ot guilty, ' since Christ and all he has done is, not only putatively, but, by free grace uniting us, really ours. P. S. - This paper having been written in great haste, during recess of Presbytery, any verbal inaccuracy or inadvertent omission is thereby accounted for. Samuel J. Baird. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frederick Burwick's modest but comprehensive and insightful intro duction is preface enough to these sensible essays in the history and philosophical criticism of ideas. If we want to understand how some in quiring and intelligent thinkers sought to go beyond mechanism and vitalism, we will find Burwick's labors of assembling others and reflect ing on his own part to be as stimulating as anywhere to be found. And yet his initial cautious remark is right: 'approaches', not 'attainments'. The problems associated with clarifying 'matter' and 'form' are still beyond any consensus as to their solution. Even more do we recognize the many forms and meanings of 'form', and this is so even for 'organic form'. That wise scientist-philosopher-engineer Lancelot Law Whyte struggled in a place neighboring to Burwick's, and his essay of thirty years ago might be a scientist's preface to Burwick and his colleagues: see Whyte'S Accent on Form (N. Y., Harper, 1954) and his Symposium of 1951 Aspects of Form (London, Percy Lund Humphries 1951; and Indiana University Press 1961), itself arranged in honor of D' Arcy Thompson's classical monograph On Growth and Form. Philosophy and history of science must deal with these issues, and with the mixture of hard-headedness and imagination that they de mand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unparalleled and incomprehensible love of God to sinful man, displayed in the wonderful affair of his redemption and salvation, is the great thing celebrated throughout the Scriptures. This work is found in the covenant between the Father and the Son, called in theology, “The Covenant of Redemption.” Willard clearly and biblically explains the Covenant of Redemption dividing the entire treatise into two general heads in order to explain the glorious mystery of this covenant. 1) The provision which God made for our deliverance before time in eternity, and 2) The things which are done in time for its actual accomplishment. From these two main points he covers a right understanding of what a covenant is, how the covenant is found clearly in Scripture, how this covenant was necessary in relationship to man’s salvation, and lastly, what the influence is which the covenant of redemption has to the covenant of grace, which is made with us. His final two chapters cover application by way of exhortation and consolation. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first major biography in English in over thirty years of the seminal modern Jewish thinker Martin Buber An authority on the twentieth-century philosopher Martin Buber (1878–1965), Paul Mendes-Flohr offers the first major biography in English in thirty years of this seminal modern Jewish thinker. The book is organized around several key moments, such as his sudden abandonment by his mother when he was a child of three, a foundational trauma that, Mendes-Flohr shows, left an enduring mark on Buber’s inner life, attuning him to the fragility of human relations and the need to nurture them with what he would call a “dialogical attentiveness.” Buber’s philosophical and theological writings, most famously I and Thou, made significant contributions to religious and Jewish thought, philosophical anthropology, biblical studies, political theory, and Zionism. In this accessible new biography, Mendes-Flohr situates Buber’s life and legacy in the intellectual and cultural life of German Jewry as well as in the broader European intellectual life of the first half of the twentieth century.

This examination of Erikson's contributions - among them the concepts of identity and the life cycle and the discipline of psychohistory - revisits Freud in light of Erikson and Erikson in terms of Freud.
