Book excerpt: The susceptibility of aircraft insulation to residual moisture provides the opportunity and need to model the drainage of accumulated water on insulation linings and nearby structure in passively ventilated air pockets. The science of water droplets, how they form, how they are distributed on surfaces, and when they fall is critical to heat transfer applications. Research to date has been focused on enhancing the heat transfer rates by modifying hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces to increase steady-state condensate drainage rates. However, the residual moisture that is remaining after the interfacial mass transfer stops is largely ignored. A method of predicting the residual water on a surface is needed to enable aircraft developers, operators, and maintainers to estimate drying times for insulation. This study introduces a Modelica based reduced-order condensation simulation model. The 1-D modeling method incorporates three tunable parameters, 1) $\zeta$, a factor to scale droplet based physics to control volume based conservation equations, 2) $\eta$, a modification factor to set the maximum droplet diameter, and 3) $v_f$, a factor to tune the average droplet velocity to an observed value. It simulates water droplet flow rates, driven by gravity, at a similar resolution to a CFD fluid film model, and runs in a fraction of the time.
