Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Story of the Red Cross: Glimpses of Field Work It is my thought that a brief account of the work of the Red Cross during the past twenty five years will be of interest to the American peo ple. In a volume of this size it must of necessity be but a brief outline, sufficient, however, to con vey a clear impression of what the Red Cross really means to every individual in this great coun try of ours. To the thousands of American men and women whose generous bounty has made the work of the Red Cross possible, to the stricken and distressed who because of it have been helped back to life and hope, and to all the friends of the great, universal humanity which it typifies, this small book is lov ingly dedicated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Red Cross, in the Great War It is the effort of this book to set forth the scope, character and effect of the work of the American Red Cross during the Great War. When the war closed more than thirty million Americans were enrolled in the organization. Some of these were in foreign fields; most of them were at home. But, in one way or another, they were all helping. All of them working together made up the American Red Cross. Stories of special sacrifice or devotion cannot be given here and yet few organizations have so closely touched the great currents of human life. Detailed narratives will accordingly follow this book. I have sought here to summarize the work of the thirty millions as a whole. To characterize the Red Cross work of any man or woman, or to attempt to describe it with any regard to proper perspective, would be invidious if not impossible. I have therefore omitted the mention of names. The highest satisfaction any worker in the Red Cross can derive from his work is from the fact that the work itself was well done. The files of the War Council have been freely drawn upon in the preparation of this book. And I want to make special acknowledgment to every member of the force at headquarters, and to the special correspondents and staffs of our foreign commissions, who seemingly have vied with. one another in supplying me, either orally or in writing, with material without which the scope of this book could not be what it is. Indeed it may accurately be said that the book itself is a product of the American Red Cross. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Red Cross Health Center: Prepared for Red Cross Chapters Red Cross Chapters everywhere wish to continue their Red Cross labors and chiefly now for the benefit of the people at home. But how? This pamphlet on the american red cross health center will show how the work of preventing diseases and suffering can be undertaken 'and conducted. The Health Center herein described is a simple local health enterprise. It is not something so technically forbidding as to place it beyond the possibility of having its usefulness understood and appreciated by the average lay mind. On the con trary, it will be readily recognized that in this Health Center is represented a health work which any group of lay people can undertake and conduct under the leadership furnished by Division and National offices. This pamphlet is pre sented, therefore, to meet a demand for a local Red Cross service in which every body can become deeply interested and play an important part. One heard and read recurring allusions to the vital aid she had rendered us during our War of the Revolution and the debt owed her by the world because of her consistent and heroic efforts to secure the rights of the individual. France had been the crucible where all the great social and political questions of Europe had first been tried out. She was ever one of the leaders in the onward march of civilization. In art, science, and literature she had held aloft the standard and throughout her history her courage and gallantry had burned like those inextinguishable lamps on the altars of the ancients. The wonder of the Crusades, that still glows for us like a lonely jewel in the dark setting of the Middle Ages, is due mainly to her and she it was who first emerged from the gloom of those stagnant years and gave to Europe the initial example of a new and definite social organization. It was on her soil that the people, as distinguished from the aristocracy, first united in the Third Estate whose voice, sounding always the slogan of justice for the masses, was heard and heeded in other countries. From her Revolution came those ideas that are today the basis of her public and private laws; ideas which "the Republic and the Empire, by their victories, disseminated in every part of Europe and which are destined to spread over the whole world because they are summed up in the one word justice." The bright light of high noon day speaks out clear to me from out the heavens - the Master light - to follow up 'till I reach up there; Then the change will come to me, as the folds of my. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under the Red Cross Flag at Home and Abroad Whenever war or serious calamity arouses universal interest in the Red Cm the requests for information increase a hundred fold, and at the same time the mem bers of its stafi are overwhelmed with duties that active relief measures bring upon them. Notwithstanding the fact that Qm' s'czcuse s'aocuse, the writer believes it not unfair to say that Under the Red Cross Flag has been written at such a time of stress and during long drawn-out pressure of work, with many attendant prob lems and anxieties. No cfiert has been made to produce a detailed and complete history of the organization here or elsewhere. Such would require years of study and scores of volumes, for which there was neither time nor ability, and for which the general public has no desire. By this labor of love the hope has been rather to place briefly and simply before the American people something of the fiery of the Red Cross, its origin, development, especially in our own country, and its services for humanity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the American Red Cross in Italy American reader something of that finer and more dis criminating appreciation of Italian character that our workers in the field have invariably gained. The story of the Red Cross in Italy I shall tell in a strictly impersonal way. There will be no attempt to ap portion praise, and, indeed, as far as it is possible to do so, names will be omitted altogether. This procedure is not only in harmony with the spirit of modesty that has characterized the work of the Commission from the begin ning; it is also dictated by necessity. Only the Keeper of all records could justly distribute credits, and there is no doubt that on His books some of our humblest work ers will come in for the highest meed of praise. I have in mind one Red Cross worker who has been buried for ten months in what to the casual tourist would appear to be one of the most Godforsaken towns in Italy poor, dilapi dated, far from the railroad and out of touch with the world. Here, cut off from all communication with her kind, she has performed her modest task, taking no vacation, daily on the job from early morning until late in the evening. Happy in her work, she has come to love the simple people with whom her lot is cast, and should you commiserate her, she will reply with a smile: Human nature is pretty much alike wherever you find it. By her tact and devotion she has won the affection of the people and filled with courage and a new loyalty hearts that were wavering and made of a disloyal town one of the most loyal. There is no glory and no fame in obscure service like this. But such a faithful servant desires no glory. She is the spirit of the Red Cross in the field, and she has many names, many which I know, many that I could not give. Therefore I name her not. Let me simply, once for all, clean the score by paying tribute to her wherever in Italy she may be hidden, and to all the army of Red Cross workers in Rome and in the field, high and low, whose devotion has made the work in Italy a success.
