Book Synopsis Chicano Detective Fiction by : Susan Baker Sotelo
Download or read book Chicano Detective Fiction written by Susan Baker Sotelo and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his 1985 novel Partners in Crime, writer Rolando Hinojosa introduced homicide investigator Rafe Buenrostro, the first Chicano protagonist in one of the most enduring genres of modern literature. Since that time, Chicano writers have embraced the detective novel, successfully diversifying and refining a traditional Anglo American and British genre. The 21 whodunits of Hinojosa, Rudolfo Anaya, Lucha Corpi, Michael Nava and Manuel Ramos are closely studied in this groundbreaking work. The models, both contemporary and Romantic, of this relatively new Chicano genre are first discussed. Next come detailed analysis and reviews of such novels as Shaman Winter, Partners in Crime, Cactus Blood and 18 others, focusing on how each writer departs from contemporary detective genre formula, uniquely rendering a particular regional or cultural variation of what it means to be Chicano. It is this departure from the norm that defines these writings and distinguishes them from the Anglo American and British whodunit. Interviews with the writers conclude the work.

This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short Fiction by Hispanic Writers of the United States includes representative works by the most celebrated Cuban-American, Mexican-American and Puerto Rican writers of short fiction in the country. The texts cover a full range of expression, themes and styles of US Hispanics and are introduced by informative entries which place the authors in their cultural and historic frameworks. In these pages, the reader will not find picturesque, folksy or touristy renditions of Hispanic culture. Instead, Short Fiction by Hispanic Writers of the United States brings together works that are clear, incisive and authentic representations of Hispanic life in the United States. The selections are as diverse as Hispanic culture itself and as varied as the personalities of their authors. Here are Max Mart’nezÕs outrageous challenge of racial and social structures, Roberta Fern‡ndezÕs construction of Hispanic womenÕs aesthetics, Roberto Fern‡ndezÕs subversion of the English language, Nicholasa MohrÕs humorous attack on patriarchy, and Judith Ortiz CoferÕs poetic evocation of childhood and biculturalism. This collection engages in aesthetic and cultural experience that will result in a re-defined canon and a new identity for the country as whole. They are re-focusing our perception of ourselves as a people and a culture. The pressure and the commitment to do so, of course, make for excellence and innovation in literary expression. It also makes for enjoyable reading. Short Fiction by Hispanic Writers of the United States is recommended for the general fiction reader and for use in high school and college literature classes in search of a multicultural perspective.

Book Synopsis Somniloquarry, Dreams & Drawings by : Kevin Millsap
Download or read book Somniloquarry, Dreams & Drawings written by Kevin Millsap and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As might be expected, the inspiration for this introduction came to me in a dream. Now, finally, I know the book is complete. It represents a long tenacious labor of many small quiet moments collected into a form that I hope you will enjoy. The text holds all the dreams (::) that I have written down. I began that recording process in the spring of 1981 at the age of 22. They span from my fourth year up to my forty-fifth, 1963 to 2004. These are actual nocturnal visions that were given to me in sleep. I have polished on them intensely all spring and feel that they have become a worthy set of image poems. The ink drawings (”) were done while awake. They are grouped to improve the flow of reading. Those sections do mark the moment in time of their actual public showings. Interspersing each of them into its chronological place would not do justice to the hundreds of other things that I have doodled and failed to capture. In total they present the story of a life. The narration and art are only (mostly) from the usually silent unconscious. Mundane events and needs have caused large gaps in the time-line. This work can be seen as a true novel or as an odd autobiography. Each entry is a crumb from my dreaming mind. I welcome you to the feast.

The subject material is varied and diverse---the bulk of it is a recounting of real life experiences, both mundane and dramatic, frequently analyzed from sociological, philosophical, psychological and humanistic perspectives. It also includes commentary on sociological issues, as well as topical commentary on the events of the day: the O.J. Simpson trial, the death of Princess Diana, and September 11, 2001. Sports topics of the day are discussed, and a smattering of poetry is also included, as well as reader commentary. It is an open-minded and multi-faceted book unlike any other you have read or will read.
