Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 23 (thesis year 1978) a total of 10,148 theses titles from 27 Canadian and 220 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 23 reports these submitted in 1978, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: The book provides fault detection and diagnosis approaches from the perspective of filtering analysis. In order to design fault detection filters, it uses set-membership principles to deal with the unknown but bounded noise term. Some regular geometric spaces are introduced, such as the ellipsoid, polyhedron, interval, to describe the feasible parameter sets of the given system. Both principles and engineering practice have been addressed, with more weight placed on engineering practice. Some typical application cases are studied for fault detection and diagnosis in detail, which are power converter, permanent magnet synchronous motor, pitch system of wind turbine. Given its scope, the book offers a valuable guide for students, teachers, engineers and researchers in the field of fault detection and diagnosis.

Book excerpt: This is a revised version of the 1984 book of the same name but considerably modified and enlarged to accommodate the developments in recursive estimation and time series analysis that have occurred over the last quarter century. Also over this time, the CAPTAIN Toolbox for recursive estimation and time series analysis has been developed at Lancaster, for use in the MatlabTM software environment (see Appendix G). Consequently, the present version of the book is able to exploit the many computational routines that are contained in this widely available Toolbox, as well as some of the other routines in MatlabTM and its other toolboxes. The book is an introductory one on the topic of recursive estimation and it demonstrates how this approach to estimation, in its various forms, can be an impressive aid to the modelling of stochastic, dynamic systems. It is intended for undergraduate or Masters students who wish to obtain a grounding in this subject; or for practitioners in industry who may have heard of topics dealt with in this book and, while they want to know more about them, may have been deterred by the rather esoteric nature of some books in this challenging area of study.

Book excerpt: Control and Dynamic Systems: Advances in Theory and Applications, Volume 53: High Performance Systems Techniques and Applications covers the significant research works on the issues and applications of high performance control systems techniques. This book is divided into 11 chapters and starts with an examination of the contribution of computing power with advances in theory in global optimization. The next chapters present robust solution techniques for combined filtering and parameter estimation in discrete time and the design and analysis of model reference adaptive control techniques for both continuous and discrete time multivariable plants with additive and multiplicative unmodeled dynamics. These topics are followed by discussions of the decentralized adaptive control; robust recursive estimation of states and parameters of bilinear systems; the design of robust control systems under uncertainty cases; and the techniques for state estimation for linear stationary dynamic systems that are subject to unknown time varying plant and output disturbances. Other chapters deal with the sliding control algorithm, the techniques in robust broadband beamforming, and the different categories of robust robotic controllers. The final chapter looks into the problems and issues of performance and versatility of non-linear control and the application of artificial neural networks. This book is of great value to process, control, mechanical, and design engineers.

Book excerpt: Smoothness Priors Analysis of Time Series addresses some of the problems of modeling stationary and nonstationary time series primarily from a Bayesian stochastic regression "smoothness priors" state space point of view. Prior distributions on model coefficients are parametrized by hyperparameters. Maximizing the likelihood of a small number of hyperparameters permits the robust modeling of a time series with relatively complex structure and a very large number of implicitly inferred parameters. The critical statistical ideas in smoothness priors are the likelihood of the Bayesian model and the use of likelihood as a measure of the goodness of fit of the model. The emphasis is on a general state space approach in which the recursive conditional distributions for prediction, filtering, and smoothing are realized using a variety of nonstandard methods including numerical integration, a Gaussian mixture distribution-two filter smoothing formula, and a Monte Carlo "particle-path tracing" method in which the distributions are approximated by many realizations. The methods are applicable for modeling time series with complex structures.

Book excerpt: This book has grown out of a set of lecture notes prepared originally for a NATO Summer School on "The Theory and Practice of Systems ModelLing and Identification" held between the 17th and 28th July, 1972 at the Ecole Nationale Superieure de L'Aeronautique et de L'Espace. Since this time I have given similar lecture courses in the Control Division of the Engineering Department, University of Cambridge; Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Western Australia; the University of Ghent, Belgium (during the time I held the IBM Visiting Chair in Simulation for the month of January, 1980), the Australian National University, and the Agricultural University, Wageningen, the Netherlands. As a result, I am grateful to all the reci pients of these lecture courses for their help in refining the book to its present form; it is still far from perfect but I hope that it will help the student to become acquainted with the interesting and practically useful concept of recursive estimation. Furthermore, I hope it will stimulate the reader to further study the theoretical aspects of the subject, which are not dealt with in detail in the present text. The book is primarily intended to provide an introductory set of lecture notes on the subject of recursive estimation to undergraduate/Masters students. However, the book can also be considered as a "theoretical background" handbook for use with the CAPTAIN Computer Package.
