It has ever since enjoyed a degree of public favor that is perhaps beyond its merits. However that may be, my friends among the historians and the critical students of history have persuaded me that, for the sake of historical complete ness, I should include in this new edition of the book the prefatory essay on The Old Régime in the Old Dominion, which first appeared in the Atlantic Monthly for November, 1875. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Rebel Reefer The following account of some of my experiences in life will have at least the merit of simplicity, and, the story being about myself, I ask indulgence for its unavoidable egotism. It has been said that adventures come only to him who seeks them, but-i am doubtful of the correctness of this adage, for I can truthfully say that I had as little to do with the shaping of my course in life as has an empty bottle thrown overboard in mid-ocean. I spent the most impor tant years of a boy's life, those between fifteen and nine teen, so far as education and the formation of character are concerned, tied to a sword and in the midst of a most cruel war, and when peace came I was wafted hither and thither, the sport of the fickle winds of varying fortune; and, having sailed 'neath alien skies and trod the desert path, naturally I imagine that I have met with some adventures out of the usual run of the average schoolboy's experiences, and if I have written some of them down, it has been with the laudable desire of amusing other people rather than personal vanity or desire for notoriety. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of the Rebel Invasion and One Woman's Experience: During the Battle of Gettysburg Thirty-three years have passed since the events, which I shall now relate, took place. Most of the actors in our late Civil War have passed into the "Shadowy Land." A few more years and not one of all the "great hosts" who then went up to battle; not one of "all the many" who participated in the events which I am about to relate, will be living to tell the story. We all have the experiences of our life time. I had mine before, during and after the great battle which was fought on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of July, 1863, and of these I am now going to write. I do not do this for self gratification, but to please my children, my grand-children, possibly my great-grand-children, and many friends whom I dearly love. We all know, as the years go by, the story of this great battle, so often told in our days, will grow in interest, to those who may come after us, and that my experience may not die with me, I will endeavor to tell what I know, what I saw, and of the little help I was enabled to give to the wounded and dying in that momentous struggle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Recollections of the War of the Rebellion The incidents related in this little volume are chiefly confined to the regiment and batterv to which I belonged, and yet what. Is true of one organization whether in camp or in the field, is to a certain extent, true of others. The drill, the guard duty and the camp sports are essentially the same, and since war means killing, the methods adopted for this purpose in every action, are practicallv the same. The Twenty-third Maine Regiment served its term of enlistment in doing guard dutv on the Potomac, from Alexandria to Harper's Ferry. It had no en gagcment with the enemy, and yet the death rate was uncommonly large, thereby indicating the character of its service The Seventh Maine Battery joined the army of the Potomac in the march to the Wilder ness, and participated in all the subsequent engage ments of that gallant army. There were a number of men, including the writer, who served in both of these organizations and had the varied experience incident to both. There were no two organizations that left the State to aid in putting down the rebel lion, that contained a greater proportion of first class men than the two under consideration. Besides a large number of independent farmers, there were college graduates, merchants, mechanics. Teachers and other professional men. They enlisted from purely patriotic motives, and served with an eye single to the preservation of the Union. More than thirty years have elapsed since the regiment was organized, and many 'of those who survived the war, have since gone the way of all the earth. The scope oi this work will admit of only brief mention of any of them, but if such brief mention shall in any manner serve to keep green their memories and preserve the record of their sacrifices and heroic deeds, its preparation and its publication will not have been in vain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Rebel Notwithstanding the title of this volume, I do not admit that I was ever in any true sense a rebel, neither do I intend any disrespect when I call the Northern soldiers Yankees. The use of these terms is only a concession to the appellations that were customary during the war. It is my purpose to record some recollections of the Civil War, and incidentally to furnish some historical notices of the brigade to which I was attached. Here and there I have expressed, also, some opinions concerning the great events of that dreadful period, some criticisms of the conduct of battles and retreats, and some estimates of the abilities of prominent generals. The incentive to write is of a complex nature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Life in the Far East The native city was then, and had been since the previous September, in the occupation of the Triad rebels. The Govern ment soldiers, called Imperialists, had closely invested the city on all sides except the Foreign Settlement, which the Treaty Consuls would not suffer them to occupy, and, as supplies of food and munitions continued to reach the rebels through this unguard'ed channel, this naturally created unpleasant relations between the native soldiery and foreigners. The tints of youth; the tumult of battle; the old and worn and tattered banners; the neighing horses; the broken caissons; the prisoners of war; the Mis sissippi flotilla; the defiant rebel yell on the midnight departure from Corinth; Bragg's broken columns on the shifting field of Mission Ridge; the bloody repulse of Kenesaw and Marietta; the discomfiture of Hood before Atlanta; the exultant March to the Sea; the advance in storm and flood through the Caro linas; the bloody hour before Bentonville; the Surrender of Johnson at Raleigh; and the pageant on Pennsylvania Avenue following the funeral car of President Lincoln. Gone are they all; and I too am soon gone! In the fleeting moment the aging veteran, hat in hand, waves a salute to the oncoming youth, bearing full high advanced the colors of his country to undreamed-oi triumphs: for this is our warfare; no battle; no crown of Victory! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent rediscovery of Rebel Private: Front and Rear, effectively lost for decades, marks an authentic publishing event in the literature of the Civil War. A rare insight into the conflict from the point of view of a Confederate army enlisted man, this compelling memoir has been hailed by historians as a classic and indispensible key to understanding the Southern perspective. Margaret Mitchell even described it as her single most valuable source of research for Gone With the Wind. This stunning document is the work of a common foot soldier blessed with extraordinary perception and articulateness. After joining the famed Texas Brigade under Stonewall Jackson. Private William A. Fletcher saw action at Second Manassas, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Channcellorsville, and Chickamauga. He was wounded several times and escaped from a moving Union prison train before the South's surrender. In 1907, he published this powerfully evocative account of his exploits, a volume of frank, detailed recollections that spares none of the horror, courage, or absurdity of war. But a fire destroyed all but a few copies before they could be distributed. One copy, however, did make its way to the Library of Congress, where it was eventually discovered. Today, this colorful work has become the voice of the Civil War front-line grunt, speaking to the modern reader with the intensity of personal experience and a vividness of detail that gives it a riveting you-are-there quality.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Recollections of the War of the Rebellion Why do you not write some of your personal recollections of the War of the Rebellion, and relate some of your personal experiences therein for the amusement and edification of your children? The above question was propounded to me by the mother of the children, some fifteen or more years after the war closed, and so pertinent was it that it seemed strange I had not thought of it before. I am aware that my experience was by no means an exceptional one, that there were very many whose army life was much more replete with thrilling adventure than I am able to relate, yet in a service somewhat varied and covering a period embracing the greater part of the war, there were circumstances that came under my personal observation which may be of interest to the persons for whom this record is especially made. The minor events of a great war are those less likely to be recorded, but even those to a "posterity that delights in details," will not be devoid of interest. An army is a vast machine of which soldiers, and subordinate officers are component parts, and unquestioned obedience to the will of the commanding general is the chief element of success.
