It would be hard now to find any Indians who are as close to the original traditions as were those old friends of mine. I want to give the boys and girls of to-day a chance to see the Indian as I saw him, and to know how he lived and what he thought. It is a pleasure to tell this story; for I came to love the Indian, and I had great respect for him and for his manner of life. When I first lived among the Dakotas, they were still strongly prejudiced in favor of the old ways, tradi tions and customs. They looked back-with regret upon earlier times, when they lived, unmolested, the wild, free life of the forests. They said that their ancestors were better men than they, because their ancestors lived closer to the Great Spirit, by whom the actions of all Indians were guided. I give the stories as they were told to me by old men who knew and loved the old-time ways, and who wanted to give me the real facts because they saw that I respected their customs and believed in them. In these stories I share with the boys and girls of to-day, who can never know the old-fashioned Indians, my recollections of a busy and happy life among them, at a time when they had not unlearned all the old customs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian This volume might be called one of recollections, for in it have been set down many memories of Indian life. The scenes described I have witnessed with my own eyes; the stories related are those which have been told me by the Indians themselves. These stories are introduced freely because the con crete example conveys a clearer idea of an event than an abstract statement, and because the story of the Indian should not be told wholly from the point of view of a race alien in thought, feeling, and culture. No narrative about any people can do them justice if written by one who is not in some degree in sympathy with them, and acquainted with their ways of thought and with the motives which govern them. Before an intelligent account of it can be given, the stranger race must be comprehended. Long association with Indi ans enables a white man ultimately to share their thought and feelings; and he who has reached this point understands the Indian. He understands that the red man is a savage and has savage qualities, yet he sees also that the most impressive characteristic of the Indian is his humanity. For in his Simplicity, his vanity, his sensitiveness to ridicule, his desire for re venge, and his fear of the supernatural, he is a child and acts like one. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Good Indian T was somewhere in the seventies when old Peaceful Hart woke to a realization that gold-hunting and Iumbago do not take kindly to one another, and the fact that his pipe and dim-eyed meditation appealed to him more keenly than did his prospector's pick and shovel and pan seemed to imply that he was growing old. He was a silent man, by occupation and by nature, so he said nothing about it; but, like the wild things of prairie and wood, instinctively began preparing for the winter of his life. Where he had lately been wash ing tentatively the sand along Snake River, he built a ranch. His prospector's tools he used in digging ditches to irrigate his new-made meadows, and his mining days he lived over again only in halting recital to his sons when they clamored for details of the old days when the Indians were not mere untidy neighbors to be gos siped with and fed, but enemies to be fought, upon occasion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Indian The books which are to appear in this series are intended to present peculiar and characteristic phases of earlier development in that portion of our country which lies beyond the Missouri River. The specialization of American history has found expression in numerous studies of the colonial life of New England, New York, and Virginia, indeed, all the Eastern seaboard, and in discussions of explorations westward like those of the Spaniards to the south and the French to the north, and of migrations away from the seaboard, like the movement across the Blue Ridge to Kentucky, and the various patriarchal journeyings which began the settlement of Ohio and the middle West. The final occupation of the real West has come about almost in our own time. The first white male child born in Kansas is an honoured resident of the State to-day, and Kansas is venerable in comparison with States and Territories beyond. Speaking roughly, the Missouri divides sections very dissimilar in certain characteristics of their evolution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures With Indians The wide range and diversified interest of these pictures of adventures with Indians give this book a distinctive character. Of thrilling struggles for life - in which the wit and courage of the white man were pitted against the cunning and fierce instinct of the red - there is no lack; and the dramatic quality of heroic deeds, like Lawson's fight against the Apaches, will absorb the attention of every reader. But there are, also, stories full of humor, like Mr. Mighel's charming tale, and Mr. Stoddard's "Punk: " stories of loyalty and devotion, like Miss Cooper's touching Buster Bill, and historical tales, like "A Home-run in Indiana," which is in itself an illustration of pioneer life in the Middle West. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Indian Days Upon a hanging precipice atop of the Eagle Scout Butte there appeared a motionless and solitary figure - almost eagle-like he perched! The people in the camp below saw him, but none looked at him long. They turned their heads quickly away with a nervous tingling, for the height above the plains was great. Almost spirit-like among the upper clouds the young warrior sat immovable. It was Antelope. He was fasting and seeking a sign from the "Great Mystery," for such was the first step of the young and ambitious Sioux who wished to be a noted warrior among his people. He is a princely youth, among the wild Sioux, who hunts for his tribe and not for himself! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures Among the Indians The character of the aboriginal inhabitants of the western continent is in many respects remarkable and striking. It possesses great interest for the student of history as well as the observer of human nature. Still this character has never been properly exhibited in a connected view. One is obliged to detect the traits in detached incidents and scattered descriptions: and thus by a sort of inductive process to determine the real disposition, powers and capabilities of the North American Savage. It is for the purpose of bringing the materials of this inductive process within the compass of a single volume of moderate size that these "Anecdotes" have been collected. They present the savage in all his various aspects and relations, in all circumstances of sorrow and joy, danger, difficulty and triumph. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the Indians in the Rockies When in the seventies I turned my back on civilization and joined the trappers and traders of the North west, Thomas Fox became my friend. We were together in the Indian camps and trading posts often for months at a time; he loved to recount his adventures in still earlier days, and thus it was that I learned the facts of his life. The stories that he told by the evening camp-fire and before the comfortable fireplaces of our various posts, on long winter days, were impressed upon my memory, but to make sure of them I frequently took notes of the more important points. As time passed, I realized more and more how unusual and interesting his adventures were, and I urged him to write an account of them. He began with enthusiasm, but soon tired of the unaccustomed work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Amongst the Indians: A Book for Youth As I had been for several years past strongly impressed with the impropriety of the system of fictionizing facts on these people, expressly "for boys' reading," leading the youth of this country into many errors regarding Indian character, I at once embraced the suggestion made to me, and am here entering upon the plan, the results of which will be met, and judged of, in the following pages. As the youthful readers of this volume will scarcely have read my work on the North American Indians published some years since, they may reasonably expect me to give some introduction of myself before we start together, which I will here do in a few words, and leave them to learn more of me when I may incidentally appear in scenes and scenery to be described.
