Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Reader for the Seventh Grade I'r may safely be assumed that children in the sixth and seventh years in school are ready to enter upon a more serious study of the best literature. The earlier Readers of this series contain many selections from the familiar classics of all ages. In the upper Readers the average pupil may now enjoy a greater variety of readings from standard authors, representative of wider fields of the world's culture. It should not be forgotten, however, that in any company of children in the elementary schools, there are few who have sufficient intelligence or maturity to study standard literature, as such, continuously and exclusively. It has been the aim of the authors, therefore, to present selections having informational and story interest as well as literary value. Combining as they do, then, interesting subject matter with distinction of style, these books will be found of great stimulative use in forming the taste of the pupils and in leading them, by attractive means, to the appreciation of the best in literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Story Hour Readings: Seventh Year This reader undertakes to provide desirable material for work in silent reading without losing sight of the other elements essential in a good reader for pupils in the seventh grade or in the first year of the junior high school. One task before the teacher of Reading in this year is to foster, by stimulating material, a taste for good reading which it is to be hoped has at least been partially formed in the preceding grades. The selections in this volume are made with the purpose of giving the seventh-grade pupils such virile and enjoyable literature as will make them desire more of the same kind. The character and fitness of the material, not the date of its production, have governed the choice of the editor. It is intended for the grade in which most stress is usually laid upon the study of the history of the United States, and can very appropriately be used in connection with this study. The literature of a country cannot be separated from its history, and the natural connection between these two should be emphasized in all study of either. This book is especially rich in matter intimately connected with history, and tending to stimulate patriotism. Here, more than in some of the other books, selections have been made from longer works, and it is hoped that the teachers will urge the children to read the works entire. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reading-Literature: Seventh Reader; Adapted and Graded This volume is offered as the basic reader for the seventh grade of the elementary school. As such it includes a large number of masterpieces that have been approved by years of use in our best systems of schools and, for reasons that should be obvious, a few selections from more recent literature. Together they should prove a satisfactory preparation for the work in the high school or for further independent reading. The writings of many different authors, mostly American, are represented. When for any reason a cutting has been made, the omissions are indicated. As the mechanics of reading have been mastered and the study of detail in the high school has not yet begun, the grammar grades seem peculiarly the place for establishing the habit of reading rapidly and widely for pleasure in the field of good literature. Consequently the pupils should be acquainted with a variety of authors and types of writing, and the classroom instruction should center upon the principal themes of each selection rather than on the details. With few exceptions, the choice of the material was determined by the manifested interests of the children. There has been a frank attempt in the book to cause children to love the beautiful and the noble, and thus to acquire ideals that should have on them a permanent influence. The selections for the most part fall into groups centering upon some common topic or looking toward some common aim. The sequence of the groups as well as of the selections within the groups is determined by pedagogic reasons; but inasmuch as out of the abundant material some teachers will doubtless find it necessary to select and rearrange, no division into formal parts has been indicated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Everyday Classics Seventh Reader American Life and Literature for Grammar, Grades and Junior High Schools This volume of the Everyday Classics is prepared with a two-fold purpose: (1) to introduce young people to a part of that common cultural material which is now a part of' our inheritance, and (2) to put them into sympathy with some of the feelings and ideals which are in a special sense Ameri can. The importance of unifying our national life has not for more than a century seemed so urgent as in these last few years. The school, and particularly the literature read there, have long been recognized as among the most potent means of building such national unity. It has been our purpose also so to choose and arrange the material of the book as to provide for that real study and reflection, that growing consciousness of power that should come from the courses in the highest elementary grades and the Junior High School. The administrative segregation of the Junior High School from the grades below it should be based on a course of study differentiated, but not too sharply, from the work of the preceding year. One way of doing this is to bring like elements in the work into groups constituting larger units. Most of the selections in this volume will suggest to the alert teacher other books and articles on similar themes.
