Book excerpt: The Wise Legacy explores the profound impact of Sidney Wise, the late Charles A. Dana Professor of Government at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Sid encouraged many of his students, including prominent politicians, educators, religious leaders, lobbyists and business executives, to pursue public service careers, and was responsible for creating an elite Washington network before online networking existed. Wise's mentees include Ronald Reagan's Chief of Staff Kenneth Duberstein, SEC Chair Mary Schapiro, Federal Judge D. Brooks Smith, HBO CEO Richard Plepler, and United Negro College Fund CEO and former Congressman William Gray, among many others. This book features 41 interviews that reveal Wise's passion for educating and guiding students, his astute use of networking to create a group of alumni dedicated to public service (many of whom serve today, years since Sid's passing), as well as his never-abused hidden power in our country. Throughout the book emerges Wise's passion for educating and guiding students, Wise's astute use of networking to create a group of alumni dedicated to public service (many of whom serve today, years since Sid's passing), as well as his never-abused hidden power in our country. At its core, this book highlights the power of mentoring and networking. Sid Wise's Rolodex, as it was often called, was a social networking vehicle long before the Internet. This book affirms the power of networking, and how working with others can define careers, and cause meaningful change.

Book excerpt: Through a curious turn of events, past and present intersect, as one man’s curse becomes another man’s fortune—not a treasure of silver and gold, but something extraordinary. Nicolas Mason never expected to find adventure in his quiet town, but fate had a way of taking him aside and revealing another path. When a stranger with a dark past makes an unexpected arrival, our hero is taken on a journey to save everything he holds most dear. A race against the clock, good verses evil; who will be the one to claim victory? The year is 1841. Step inside the small town of Brigwood and come along on a journey that will test the courage, valour, and strength of those willing to sacrifice it all. Sometimes it’s best to free yourself of what you believe to be true, and let your imagination wander past its limits. Imagine the possibilities; what could exist, what will exist as time moves toward the future? Every soul leaves behind a shadow when the light sheds its own; a legacy. This is one man's tale that will let you choose what you want to believe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthony Panizzi (1797-1879), was a naturalised British librarian of Italian birth and an Italian patriot. He was the Principal Librarian of the British Museum from 1856 to 1866. Apart from being a personal friend of British Prime ministers Lord Palmerston and William Ewart Gladstone, Panizzi conducted an active correspondence with Sardinian, and later Italian Prime Minister Count Camillo Benso di Cavour. In 1844, he assisted Giuseppe Mazzini, then in exile in London, by publishing an influential article denouncing the practice ordered by the Home Secretary of ordering Mazzini's private letters opened by the Post Office and giving copies of their contents to the Austrian Embassy. He also orchestrated a visit of Giuseppe Garibaldi to England, and convinced Gladstone to travel to Naples to view personally the inhumane conditions in which political prisoners were kept. Panizzi was a strong advocate of free and equal access to learning. He was influential in enforcing the Copyright Act of 1842, which required British publishers to deposit with the library a copy of every book printed in Britain. For his extraordinary services as a librarian, in 1869 he was knighted by Queen Victoria. In addition to his English knighthood, Panizzi was given an honorary degree by Oxford University, the Légion d'Honneur from France, various chivalric honours from the Italian Government and Crown, and in 1868 was appointed as a senator in the Italian Parliament.

Book excerpt: Lanky, mop-topped, and nicknamed for his resemblance to Big Bird on Sesame Street, Fidrych exploded onto the national stage during the Bicentennial summer as a rookie with the Detroit Tigers. He won over fans nationwide with his wildly endearing antics, but quickly emerged as one of the best pitchers in the game. Fidrych was named starting pitcher in the All-Star Game as a rookie and became the first athlete to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. Wilson recounts Fidrych's meteoric rise, his heartbreaking fall after a torn knee ligament and then rotator cuff, and captures Fidrych's post-baseball life to his death in a freak accident in 2009.

Book excerpt: "In 1948 a collection of scientists, anthropologists and photographers journeyed to northern Australia for a seven-month tour of research and discovery - now regarded as 'the last of the big expeditions'. The American-Australian Scientific Expedition to Arnhem Land was front-page news at the time, but 60 years later it is virtually unknown. This lapse into obscurity was due partly to the fraught politics of Australian anthropology and animus towards its leader, the Adelaide-based writer-photographer Charles Mountford. Promoted as a 'friendly mission that would foster good relations between Australia and its most powerful wartime ally, the Expedition was sponsored by National Geographic, the Smithsonian Institution and the Australian Government. An unlikely cocktail of science, diplomacy and popular geography, the Arnhem Land Expedition put the Aboriginal cultures of the vast Arnhem Land reserve on an international stage." -- Publisher's website.

His collection, now at Yale in the museum and study center he founded to house it, rivals those in Britain’s national museums and is unquestionably the most comprehensive representation of British art held outside of the United Kingdom. This book and the exhibition that it accompanies celebrate the centenary of his birth. Five introductory essays examine Mellon’s extraordinary collecting activity, as well as his role in creating both the Yale Center for British Art and the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art in London as gifts to his alma mater (Yale 1929). A lavishly illustrated catalogue section showcases 148 of the most exquisite and important paintings, watercolors, drawings, prints, sculpture, rare books, and manuscript material in the Yale Center’s collection, including major works by Thomas Gainsborough, Joshua Reynolds, George Stubbs, John Constable, and J. M. W. Turner.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of corporal punishment in the Brazilian navy and the four-day mutiny that took Rio hostage and put an end to the violent practice. Legacy of the Lash is a compelling social and cultural history of the Brazilian navy in the decades preceding and immediately following the 1888 abolition of slavery in Brazil. Focusing on non-elite, mostly black enlisted men and the oppressive labor regimes under which they struggled, the book is an examination of the four-day Revolta da Chibata (Revolt of the Lash) of November 1910, during which nearly half of Rio de Janeiro’s enlisted men rebelled against the use of corporal punishment in the navy. These men seized four new, powerful warships, turned their guns on Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s capital city, and held its population hostage until the government abolished the use of the lash as a means of military discipline. Although the revolt succeeded, the men involved paid dearly for their actions. This event provides a clear lens through which to examine racial identity, violence, masculinity, citizenship, modernity, and the construction of the Brazilian nation. “Offering new insights into the spectacular sailors’ revolt of 1910, Zachary R. Morgan treats the “deep structure” of Brazilian naval discipline, one based primarily on flogging. Slavery was only abolished in 1888, and the mutineers, largely of African descent, saw flogging as an intolerable holdover from the slave era. Morgan also shows the incompatibility of the old labor regime and modern naval technology. Trained on the new battleships in the English shipyards where they were built, Brazilian sailors increasingly viewed themselves as citizens in uniform.” —Joseph L. Love, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign “Legacy of the Lash is a stellar contribution to the growing global scholarship on mutiny and maritime radicalism. Zachary R. Morgan brings back to vibrant life the history-making powers of Brazil’s motley crews in the early twentieth century.” —Marcus Rediker, author of The Slave Ship: A Human History
