Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine effects of "Timed Repeated Readings" and "Paired Reading" strategies on reading fluency in a group of four second grade students. The research project was conducted daily for six weeks. The participants were all in a second grade, general education setting. They were also classified as being below grade level in reading and placed in the RTI Tier 2 reading group. During these eight weeks, the participants received daily reading fluency interventions which were "Read with Partner" or "Paired Reading" and "Timed Repeated Readings". The goal for these participants was to improve their fluency rate. This intervention required the participants to be actively involved in their learning. Twice a week students' reading aloud words per minute was recorded. After 8 weeks of the interventions, it was found that students reading below grade level were able to increase their reading fluency rates anywhere between 12% and 200%. It was also found that fluency instruction positively influenced reading comprehension within classroom instruction.

Book excerpt: Reading fluency has been identified as a key component of proficient reading. Research has consistently demonstrated significant and substantial correlations between reading fluency and overall reading achievement. Despite the great potential for fluency to have a significant outcome on students’ reading achievement, it continues to be not well understood by teachers, school administrators and policy makers. The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.

Book excerpt: "The research question addressed in this project was, how can repeated reading paired with audio passage practice strengthen the fluency of struggling elementary readers? This study was conducted to determine if using recorded passages as a model would assist struggling readers to improve their reading fluency as they implemented the repeated reading method. A key influence in performing this study was the resource, Increasing Fluency with High Frequency Word Phrases by Timothy Rasinski and Edward Fry (2004). The author explains the routine implemented for using repeated reading along with audio passage practice. Conclusions drawn from this study include: 1) Repeated reading with a model improved struggling readers' accuracy and reading rate. 2) Graphing timed results was a motivator for struggling readers. 3) Recording and evaluating their reading developed awareness in struggling readers of their strengths and needs." --

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative, quasi-experimental study was to investigate the impact of a repeated reading fluency intervention focused on prosody, counterbalanced with an intervention focused on reading strategies. Both of these interventions were designed to promote feelings of achievement through participation in activities intended to promote reading success. Seventeen eighth grade students identified as requiring reading intervention were divided into A-Day and B-Day classes. All 17 students received the interventions but in alternating seven-week phases. The repeated reading fluency intervention employed recording and reflecting of children’s books as students metacognitively reflected upon the fluency components of rate, accuracy, and prosody. The study compared the results between A-Day and B-Day students using a repeated measures design using ANOVA. The repeated measures fluency intervention examined outcomes on measures of the Gray Oral Reading Test-Fifth Edition raw scores of rate and accuracy, the Comprehensive Oral Reading Fluency Scale that measured rate, accuracy, and prosody, and Multidimensional Fluency Scale that measured prosody. In addition, students responded to questions regarding perceptions of reading ability and behaviors using the Impression of My Reading survey. Results suggested the fluency intervention focused on prosody was effective in improving prosodic ability, but inconclusive on the improvements on the fluency components of rate and accuracy. Results also indicated students had improved perceptions of their reading ability and behaviors after participation in reading interventions designed to promote student reading success. Future research recommendations include extension of reading material to include graphic novels and to incorporate writing and subsequent reading of student created stories, plays, and poems.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This study examined the effects of repeated reading practice on oral reading fluency and comprehension skills of elementary-aged students. Eight fifth-grade students, determined to be reading below grade level, and recognized by the classroom teacher as needing additional reading instruction participated in the study. A multiple baseline across subjects experimental design was used, with an initial baseline period of ten sessions. Participants entered the intervention in pairs according to similar reading levels. During each repeated reading session student pairs orally read, alternating paragraphs, to one another for a practice period of ten minutes. Students used a specified correction procedure when miscues occurred during the practice period. Following practice, each student participated in a one-minute timed trial, which was scored by the researcher for number of words read per minute and number of miscues committed by the reader. A cloze procedure comprehension assessment was done when the student reached the fluency criterion (one hundred eighty words read per minute). The dependent variables in this study were number of words read in one minute, number of miscues committed, and number of comprehension questions answered correctly. Results indicate that students' oral reading fluency improved with practice, miscues decreased with practice, and comprehension skills significantly improved overall. No word recognition skill gains were observed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of duet reading, a reading fluency intervention, for increasing the reading fluency of three elementary school students with disabilities in a public elementary school. A pre-experimental A-B design replicated across three students was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention. Each student worked one-on-one with the researcher. Dependent measures included words read correctly per minute on novel grade level passages from AIMSweb and words read per correctly per minute on practiced grade level passages from AIMSweb. In addition, after intervention, students were given grade level passages in science to assess for generalization and data were collected on words read correctly per minute. At the conclusion of intervention, participants (students and their classroom teacher) completed a questionnaire indicating their levels of satisfaction with the procedures and outcomes of the intervention. Results of the study indicated no functional relation between duet reading on reading fluency when reading novel reading passages but do indicate a functional relation between duet reading and reading fluency on repeated readings.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using repeated reading of poetry as a strategy to increase third graders' reading fluency scores. This study utilized a quasi-experimental one group pretest/post test design. The researcher implemented one poem per week, for a nine-week period, with a group of six third grade students. The study was conducted during the fall trimester of the 2009-2010 school year. The Basic Reading Inventory (BRI) was given as a pretest to establish baseline scores, as well as a post test for an indicator of progress. An anecdotal journal was used to document observations about student progress during the study. Six selected students received daily instruction on one poem per week. After being introduced to each poem. students were asked to practice reading the poem independently, with a partner and in a small group. On the last day of each week the researcher collected fluency data by timing and listening to each student. A comparison group of six different students with similar reading abilities were given the BRI pre/posttst. In comparing the performance data of the two groups, the treatment group showed a significant growth. The results may be due to the inclusion of repeated reading of simple poems as a strategy to increase fluency.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this action project was to explore the effect repeated reading strategy has on oral reading fluency and reading comprehension of middle school students. The repeated reading strategy supplemented the reading instruction of middle school students in a parental choice school. The 5-phase study included school and parental approval, student interest interview and teacher questionnaire; the administration of the Qualitative Reading Inventory - 5th edition for pre-test and post-test; repeated reading strategy training and intervention strategy implementation. Students paired together and trained on the intervention process received fluency-comprehension instruction 60 to 90 minutes twice a week. Growth was determined from the Pre-test and Post-test. The findings concluded an overall effect of the repeated reading strategy on fluency and comprehension of middle school students.

Book excerpt: This researcher investigated the effects of repeated reading, performance feedback, and systematic error correction on the reading fluency of three secondary English language learners (ELLs) with a specific learning disability (SLD) in reading. A multiple baseline reversal design across subjects was used to explore the effects of repeated reading on two dependent variables: reading fluency (words read correctly per minute; wpm) and number of errors per minute (epm). Data were collected and analyzed during baseline, intervention, and maintenance probes. Throughout the baseline phase participants read a passage aloud and during intervention phases, participants read a passage aloud and received error correction feedback. During baseline, reading was followed by fluency assessments. During intervention, reading was followed by three oral repeated readings of the passage. Maintenance sessions occurred 1, 2, and 3 weeks after the intervention ended. The researcher of this study concluded that repeated reading had a positive effect on the reading abilities of ELLs with a SLD in reading. Participants read more wpm and made fewer epm. Additionally, maintenance scores were slightly varied when compared to the last day of intervention; however, maintenance scores were higher than baseline means. The researcher of this study demonstrated that repeated reading improved the reading abilities of ELLs with a SLD in reading. On maintenance probes 1, 2, and 3 weeks following intervention mean reading fluency and errors per minute remained above baseline levels. Future researchers should investigate the use of repeated reading in ELLs with a SLD in reading at various stages of reading acquisition. Further, future researchers may examine how repeated reading can be integrated into classroom instruction and assessments.
