Communication with others (e.g., parents, older siblings, friends) about dating violence may buffer some negative outcomes associated with experiencing dating violence. Although researchers are attending more to this public health problem, what we know about the messages that adolescents receive about dating violence is limited, especially for Latina teens. To address this gap in the literature, 18 Latina adolescents (14-17 years) and their mothers participated in semi-structured interviews to explore their beliefs about what dating violence means to them, messages that are shared about dating violence with mothers and friends, adolescents' help seeking preferences and behaviors, and reasons for and against talking with parents about problems in dating relationships. Interviews were transcribed and coded for emergent themes. Participants described many examples of problems in dating relationships including some traditional forms of dating violence (e.g., physical harm) and some advancing forms of dating abuse (e.g., aggression through social media). Messages that Latina adolescents receive from parents and friends include advice to "try to work it out or get out of the relationship" and "talk to someone." Barriers to seeking help from parents and others included "worry about parent's response" and 'lack of closeness or trust." Themes of supports to seeking help from parents and others included having a "close and trusting relationship" and having had "an established pattern of communication." Latina adolescents also suggested they may prefer to seek help for problems in dating situations from friends and older siblings. Results suggest that Latina adolescents and their mothers may be knowledgeable about problems in dating situations. However, the messages that Latina adolescents receive differs by who is giving the message and Latina teens may hesitate talking to their parents about problems in dating if they fear negative parental reactions or they do not sense that parents can effectively facilitate the conversations. Given that many victims of dating violence do not tend to disclose their dating problems or seek help, these results highlight the importance of educating parents on how to promote open and effective communication. Results also highlight the importance of informing peers and siblings on how to respond when their friends/siblings experience dating problems. Finally, results suggest implications for primary prevention programs guided by support for culturally tailored interventions.

Book excerpt: Latina adolescents are more likely to be the victims of teen dating violence (TDV) than non-Latina White adolescent girls in the United States, (11.5% vs. 8%). A need exists to understand how culture impacts Latina adolescents' ability to communicate about dating violence with their parents and/or other authority figures. An exploratory qualitative study was conducted with English speaking Latina adolescents, ages 15-19 years, who were attending an urban alternative high school in King County, Washington. Most of the girls were born in the U.S. (55%) and the rest were immigrants, most commonly from Mexico. Almost all the girls' parents emigrated from Latin America. The six focus groups examined participants' knowledge of TDV, how culture impacts TDV, and whether cultural factors affect communication with parents and other authority figures. The participants discussed their knowledge and beliefs, cultural factors, and recommendations for Latina specific prevention programs. The girls were knowledgeable about dating violence. One-half of Latina adolescents had either experienced TDV themselves, or had a family member or close friend who had experienced it. The girls report that cultural issues affect their ability to communicate about dating violence with parents and other authority figures. These cultural factors include biculturalism, collectivism, familism, and machismo. The girls also suggest ways to improve prevention programs and recruit participants. The findings indicate that cultural factors are an important consideration in Latina adolescent communication with parents and authority figures when it comes to TDV. Latina adolescents would benefit from future TDV prevention programs that are culturally tailored and which address these cultural factors.

Further investigation needs to be done to address Latina adolescent perspectives on public narrative and citizen professional utilization for dating violence in the healthcare setting. Overall, this scholarly project enhances the advanced nursing practice by developing a cost-effective, transcultural approach towards improving healthcare for Latina adolescent dating violence victims.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau (2013), the Latino population has increased by more than 50% since 1990 and is currently the largest racial or ethnic minority group in the United States. Thus, the well-being of Latinos is of great importance to the general health of the United States. Given that dolescent females are less likely to seek refuge from their male partners beating if they have had witnessed their mothers as victims of abuse, this project aims to provide early intervention and prevention services to adolescent Latina youth that are currently not readily available for adolescents, specifically in mental health agencies that only provide IPV services to mother victims of IPV. This project is an equally balanced program for adolescent Latina youth who identify deeply with the Latino community and also the American culture they too grew up in as a result of their parents immigration from their country of origin to the land of opportunity. It is a unique group that offers necessary services with a preventative approach to Latina youth during adolescence, an important window of opportunity to thwart the perpetuation of violence and abuse. Most importantly, it takes into account cultural factors unique to her experiences in a culture that due to a lack of IPV understanding, places her at higher risks to continue the cycle of IPV.

Research has indicated Mexican Americans experience as many, if not more, mental health problems as other ethnic groups, including anxiety, depression, agoraphobia, simple phobia, drug and alcohol abuse, and increased rates of suicide. Mexican Americans, however, are among some of the most underserved by the mental health community. Little research, however, has focused on parents' beliefs about their adolescents' mental health, their utilization of mainstream mental health services, or their use of alternative resources for addressing their adolescent's problems. This is particularly troubling given Mexican American youth have disproportionately high rates of substance abuse, delinquency, depression and suicide. Mexican American youth's utilization patterns mirror those of adults, with lower rates of utilization than their peers of other ethnicities, and higher rates of early termination of treatment. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine a number of topics related to Mexican American mothers' perspectives on adolescent mental health, including factors that contribute to problems, steps parents would be willing to take to help their adolescent, their beliefs about the use of mental health professionals, and their use of alternatives such as curanderos, priests, or family reliance to address their adolescent mental health problems. Participants were 27 mothers of adolescents who identify themselves as being of Mexican descent (Mexican; Mexican American). Mothers who agreed to participate were interviewed in person using a semi-structured interview format. The results revealed considerable consistency in the participants' views regardless of family history, adolescent problems faced, language spoken, and their generation in the U.S. The results of this study indicated that the Mexican American mothers who participated were attuned to adolescent functioning, with a keen sense for determining whether their adolescent is experiencing problems. The participants were able to navigate a complex system that involved considering other resources in their surroundings to address their adolescent's problems. Overall, participants indicated positive regard toward the use of family, church, schools, and professionals in helping their adolescent, while the use of traditional folk healers, such as curanderos, was only minimally indicated.

Book excerpt: This qualitative investigation explored the unique experiences of immigrant Latinamothers and sex-communication with their adolescent daughters in an era of high anti- immigration rhetoric in the United States. The research findings are summarized in two studies. In study one, we explored the views of sexuality and sexuality parenting of 15 immigrant mothers of Mexican origin, using an intersectional lens to guide data analysis. To contextualize our understanding of U.S. immigrant Latina mothers, results describe participants' identity as immigrants and its connection to their personal views on sexuality and intent to parent on sexuality. Three additional themes emerged: 1) mothers' views of sexuality shaped by their intergenerational experiences-subthemes a) silence and misinformation, and b) striving for confianza to facilitate positive sex-communication experiences with daughter(s); 2) mothers' self-doubt and discomfort with sex-communication-subtheme a) answering with uncertainty and insecurity; 3) the straddling of two worlds generates internal conflict concerning mothers' views of sexuality and parenting-subthemes a) apprehension towards new perspectives on gender and sexuality, and b) fears of sexual violence shape how mothers parent and communicate with daughters. This qualitative study provides an opportunity to have a more in- depth analysis of unique processes immigrant Mexican mothers experience and the extent towhich that shapes their views on sexuality and parenting. Study 2 sought to explore immigrant Mexican mothers' reported processes of sex-communication with their adolescent daughters. This study revealed what Latina mothers think about the sexual experiences of their daughters and how their own experiences shape how they discuss sexuality with their adolescent daughters. The study findings generated five main themes: 1) Lecturing daughters about sexuality with the intent to protect; 2) Apprehension from personal experiences hinders positive sex- communication with daughters; 3) Heteronormative sexual identity and experiences for daughter are favored; 4) Grappling with Mexican/American sex values and family values; and 5) Mothers await cues from daughters to initiation sex-communication. Findings provide in-depth analysis of unique processes immigrant Mexican mothers experience and generate insights that are beneficial to sex education and prevention efforts tailored to this underserved population. Clinical implications for family therapy and parent-based sex education programming to help promote sexual health in immigrant Latino families are discussed.

However, some adolescents are exposed to physical, psychological, sexual, and economic forms of violence in their dating relationships, which can lead to poor health outcomes for both perpetrators and victims regardless of gender, race, or class. To prevent such negative outcomes, adolescents as well as their communities need community-specific opportunities to discuss and tackle dating violence. While adolescent dating violence research has increased internationally, there remains a paucity of information for the Caribbean region. For this reason, I completed a critical exploratory qualitative study in Guyana, a country that has the highest reported incidence of domestic violence for the Caribbean. The aim of my study was to provide a contextualized understanding of the phenomenon, by examining how discourses on race, gender, age, and class shape perspectives on adolescent dating violence and its prevention. A postcolonial feminist lens guided this study and data collection included 6 key informant interviews and 8 focus group discussions with parents, teachers, school officials, and adolescents at a public secondary school. Students who attended this school were from low-to-middle income families in the city of Georgetown and surrounding areas. In total, the study had 36 participants (5 boys and 8 men; 10 girls and 13 women). Three key findings emerged: 1) community perspectives on dating violence are primarily shaped by dominant discourses on respectability, colonial discourses on gender norms, family, and education, resulting in dating being unacceptable during adolescence; 2) Current authoritarian interpersonal relationships between adults and adolescents limit the possibility of engaging in conversations on dating violence; 3) Adolescents are yearning for more information on dating relationships, however, parents and teachers lack institutional and social support to promote healthy relationships and environments, which leads to frustration and fatigue. I suggest that a more effective way of addressing adolescent dating violence in Guyana is to approach it as a community issue. This approach includes continuously questioning dominant discourses and social systems in Guyanese society and creating more opportunities for people to relate to each other in ways that promote less authoritarian interactions in the current environment.
