Book Synopsis The Poem's Heartbeat by : Alfred Corn
Download or read book The Poem's Heartbeat written by Alfred Corn and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An indispensable guide for poets, readers, students, and teachers. "The Poem's Heartbeat may well be the finest general book available on prosody."--Library Journal (starred review) "A provocative, definitive manual."--Publishers Weekly Finally back in print, this slender, user-friendly guide to rhyme, rhythm, meter, and form sparks "intuitive and technical lightning-flashes" for poets and readers curious to know a poem's inner workings. Clear, good-humored, and deeply readable, Alfred Corn's book is the modern classic on prosody--the art and science of poetic meter. Each of the book's ten chapters is a progressive, step-by-step presentation rich with examples to illustrate concepts such as line, stress, scansion marks, slant rhyme, and iambic pentameter. "By the book's end," noted a rave review in The Boston Review, "Corn, magi-teacher and impeccable guide, has taught the novice to become artist and magician." The Poem's Heartbeat also includes a selected bibliography and encourages readers and students to carry their investigations further. The word "line" comes from the Latin linea, itself derived from the word for a thread of linen. We can look at the lines of poetry as slender compositional units forming a weave like that of a textile. Indeed, the word "text" has the same origin as the word "textile." It isn't difficult to compare the compositional process to weaving, where thread moves from left to right, reaches the margin of the text, then shuttles back to begin the next unit . . .
Book Synopsis Methods in prosody by : Ingo Feldhausen
Download or read book Methods in prosody written by Ingo Feldhausen and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a collection of pioneering papers reflecting current methods in prosody research with a focus on Romance languages. The rapid expansion of the field of prosody research in the last decades has given rise to a proliferation of methods that has left little room for the critical assessment of these methods. The aim of this volume is to bridge this gap by embracing original contributions, in which experts in the field assess, reflect, and discuss different methods of data gathering and analysis. The book might thus be of interest to scholars and established researchers as well as to students and young academics who wish to explore the topic of prosody, an expanding and promising area of study.

Book Synopsis Computing PROSODY by : Yoshinori Sagisaka
Download or read book Computing PROSODY written by Yoshinori Sagisaka and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a collection of papers from the Spring 1995 Work shop on Computational Approaches to Processing the Prosody of Spon taneous Speech, hosted by the ATR Interpreting Telecommunications Re search Laboratories in Kyoto, Japan. The workshop brought together lead ing researchers in the fields of speech and signal processing, electrical en gineering, psychology, and linguistics, to discuss aspects of spontaneous speech prosody and to suggest approaches to its computational analysis and modelling. The book is divided into four sections. Part I gives an overview and theoretical background to the nature of spontaneous speech, differentiating it from the lab-speech that has been the focus of so many earlier analyses. Part II focuses on the prosodic features of discourse and the structure of the spoken message, Part ilIon the generation and modelling of prosody for computer speech synthesis. Part IV discusses how prosodic information can be used in the context of automatic speech recognition. Each section of the book starts with an invited overview paper to situate the chapters in the context of current research. We feel that this collection of papers offers interesting insights into the scope and nature of the problems concerned with the computational analysis and modelling of real spontaneous speech, and expect that these works will not only form the basis of further developments in each field but also merge to form an integrated computational model of prosody for a better understanding of human processing of the complex interactions of the speech chain.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Language Prosody by : Cecilia McCurdy
Download or read book Handbook of Language Prosody written by Cecilia McCurdy and published by . This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language prosody deals with the elements of speech that are properties of syllables and larger units of speech but are not distinct phonetic segments. These elements are known as suprasegmentals and include linguistic functions such as intonation, tone, rhythm and stress. Prosody reflects the various features of the utterance or the speaker. These features include the emotional state of the speaker, the form of the utterance, the presence of irony or sarcasm, and emphasis, contrast and focus. Prosody may also reflect other elements of grammar that may not be encoded by grammar or by choice of vocabulary. Auditory measures, which are subjective, and acoustic and articulatory measures, which are objective, are differentiated in the study of prosody. This book provides comprehensive insights into the field of language prosody. From theories to research to practical applications, case studies related to all contemporary topics of relevance to this field have been included herein. Researchers and students in this field will be assisted by this book.
