Book excerpt: Distributed resource (DR) impacts voltage and frequency, and deviations out of tolerance limits are financial damage to the customers. This chapter presents an energy management system (EMS) with several approaches to overcome intermittency and create a semi-dispatchable generation supply. The EMS will work as a prosumer considering its level of dispatchability, without disturbing the frequency of the network. The power generation model is based on a small wind turbine, solar panels, PEMFC, and a hydrogen storage system. Probabilistic information concerning short-term forecast applied to wind speed and radiation is provided by individual stochastic models. The prosumer is modeled by applying time series analysis through the root mean square algorithm with forgetting factor and by using model predictive control to integrate the system. A case is presented using historic wind speed and radiation data from Mexico City and loads curves based on average households and mini-store on a daily basis.

Book excerpt: The need for unrelenting increment in energy production, diminution in currently reliant fossil fuel resources, and the perception to plummet the CO2 emissions are the foremost factors for stipulating the growth of "Green Energy" generation systems based on renewable energy resources. Electrical energy requirements for many remote applications are too large to allow the cost-effective and constrained in reliable use of available stand-alone or autonomous renewable energy sources. In these cases, it may prove more feasible to combine several different types of power sources to form a system, is known as the "Hybrid" system. Hybrid Power Systems combine two or more energy conversion devices, or two or more fuels for the same device, that when integrated, overcome the limitations inherent in either. This book is a comprehensive study of various hybrid power system architectures and merits/demerits of each architecture. A new architecture using Motor-Synchronous generator set with Energy Management and Control unit instead of conventional inverters is proposed in this book to overcome these drawbacks.

Book excerpt: This is an original study, where I designed an Energy Power System combining 2 Renewable Energy Sources (Sun and Wind) with a stand-by Diesel engine to electrify a small living compound in a remote location in Sudan (Africa). In this design the initial system cost was 31,250 $ which considered a small fraction from the cost of erecting the HV transmission lines which according to Sudanese Ministry of Energy and Mining might cost 30,000 $ for each 1 Km, while some rural communities in remote areas can be a hundreds kilometers away from the national grid. The huge cost of building a distribution substation should be also considered. I hope it will be beneficial for researchers and students and a quick reference in its field.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Addressing the growing energy concerns of the modern world is a challenging problem. Traditional carbon intensive fuel sources like coal, diesel which are instrumental in meeting today's grid demand are struggling to meet the stringent environmental regulations. Operations of independent renewable energy sources despite reducing costs are not comparable to existing costs of electricity. A sustainable approach to address these concerns is proposed in this work. A hypothetical hybrid system involving traditional fuel sources like coal, small modular nuclear reactor and renewable energy source wind is analyzed through dynamic modeling using various tools. Various simulation tools were analyzed and the tool that was best suited for capturing the dynamics interlinking various energy systems was chosen. Dynamic modeling of the hypothetical system aided in understanding the complexities involved in the control and optimization of the complex system. The optimization of the hybrid energy system involved the improved management of the high temperature steam electrolyzer (HTSE). Effective modeling of the hybrid energy system complemented with extensive analysis (technical and economic) can demonstrate the viability of the proposed hypothetical energy system. This work also demonstrates the need and depth for the extent of modeling of the energy systems."--Abstract, page iii.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the increasing demand of economy and environmental pollutions, more and more renewable energy systems with clean sources appear and have attracted attention of systems involving solar power, wind power and hybrid new energy powers[1]. However, there are some difficulties associated with combined utilization of solar and wind, such as their intermittent behavior and their peak hours mismatch in generation and consumption[1]. For this purpose, advanced network of a variety of renewable energy systems along with controllable load and storage units have been introduced [1-3]. This thesis proposes some configurations of hybrid energy harvesting systems, including wind-wind-storage DC power system with BOOST converters, solar-solar-storage DC power system with cascade BOOST converters, wind-solar-storage DC power system with BOOST converter and cascade BOOST converter, and wind-solar DC power system with SEPIC converter and BOOST converter. The models of all kinds of systems are built in Matlab/Simulink and the mathematical state-space models of combined renewable energy systems are also established. Several MPPT control strategies are introduced and designed to maximize the simultaneous power capturing from wind and solar, such as Perturb & Observe (P&O) algorithm for solar and wind, Tip Speed Ratio (TSR) control and Power Signal Feedback (PSF) control for wind, and Sliding Mode Extremum Seeking Control (SM-ESC) for wind and solar systems[4]. The control effects of some of these MPPT methods are also compared and analyzed. The supervisory control strategies corresponding to each configurations are also discussed and implemented to maximize the simultaneous energy harvesting from both renewable sources and balance the energy between the sources, battery and the load[2]. Different contingencies are considered and categorized according to the power generation available at each renewable source and the state of charge in the battery [2]. Applying the system architectures and control methods in the proposed hybrid new energy systems is a novel and significant attempt, which can be more general in the practical applications. Simulation results demonstrate accurate operation of the supervisory controller and functionality of the maximum power point tracking algorithm in each operating condition both for solar and for wind power [3].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rapidly increasing demand of energy, renewable energy generation becomes increasingly popular due to its clean and sustainable features. Therefore, microgrids are gaining more attention with increased penetration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES). Among all the RESs, the Photovoltaic (PV) technology brings a huge advantage in the power industry. Due to its wide availability, microgrids can be used as independent power source for critical loads; hospitals and military bases during emergency situations such as earthquakes or bad weather, where there is no access to the main grid. Highly improved storage facility can be an option for these critical issues in the energy industry. Although Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) would be an option, its limited cycle life makes it cost ineffective to use only batteries for smoothing out the PV power fluctuations caused by renewable intermittency. In view of this, the combination of battery and Supercapacitor (SC) is one of the popular Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS) configurations. The SC absorbs all transients and that will increase the life span of the battery. However, an effective Energy Management System (EMS) is required for these HESSs to achieve cost-effective system with high efficiency along with system stability. In this research thesis, among different types of control systems, the fuzzy logic system is considered. First of all, Mamdani type fuzzy inference system is implemented to track the maximum power point of the PV as this is very important in isolated microgrids where there is no backup power from the smart grid. The DC bus power balance can be achieved through the proposed Sugeno type fuzzy controller due to its high efficiency. With the variation of the load demand can be addressed successfully through another Mamdani type Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) to keep the State of Charge (SOC) of the battery and SC within safe range. Furthermore, in grid-connected mode, the new fuzzy logic based PQ controlled Voltage Source Converter (VSC) is implemented with the results. The simulation results are obtained using the MATLAB/Simulink R2017b integrated development environment. At the end of the simulation, these fuzzy logic results are compared with the conventional PI controlled system’s results to prove the proposed system’s efficiency. A new adaptive fuzzy controller is introduced in the later of this research to achieve more cost-effective operation for PQ controlled VSC. This controller will be generated different gains due to the electricity market price variations and current SOC of the HESS. Therefore, active power reference which will be used to exchange power from the grid will be changed due to the system output gain variations. Finally, hardware experiments are carried out for microgrid DC bus voltage regulation to further verify the efficiency of the proposed method. The dSPACE MicroLabBox is used to perform real-time simulation. The dSPACE is capable of communicating with the hardware using the Ethernet protocol. A universal dSPACE experiment software (ControlDesk 6.3) is used as the supervisory controlled and data acquisition platform for the MicroLabBox hardware. SEMIKRON Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors(IGBTs) and their drivers are used to implement the DC-DC converters. However, hardware results show the proposed system has better characteristics than traditional PI controller based system. Keywords: Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS), State of Charge (SOC), Energy Management, Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC), Fuzzy Inference System (FIS).

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a growing concern regarding the climate change consequences of continued fossilized fuel consumption worldwide, more emphasis is now being placed on the use of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and others to satisfy the growing energy demand. Despite the widespread enthusiasm in their implementation, the discrete generation and inherent uncertainty in renewable resources cannot be overlooked. Hybrid renewable energy systems (HRES) that consist of photovoltaic thermal, wind, fuel cells, and diesel generator as a backup resource as well as storage components turn to be a promising solution to overcome the drawbacks of single-resource systems. This dissertation focuses on the energy management strategies for both generation and demand side with applications to residential and industrial users. Detailed models for the hybrid renewable energy systems as well as each energy component are introduced first for the system design and operation. It is demonstrated how to design and operate a stand-alone hybrid renewable energy conversion system to satisfy the residential electricity demand. The strength of the proposed strategy is that it is able to achieve global optimization over a certain time period and at the same time the users are able to obtain sufficient information of the future conditions and thus make rational decisions about electricity management. Compared with traditional operation of energy systems, the on-line process that combines real-time prediction, optimization and demand-responsive scheme will improve system efficiency and take better advantage of all available resources. The optimal design and operation strategies are further applied to the management of energy flows in chlor-alkali process using HRES consisting of solar and wind energy generation units and fuel cells to supply energy in a grid-connected mode which allows for buying or selling electricity from and to the grid. Several optimization strategies are developed and implemented to deal with the variability in renewable resources and electricity pricing faced by the process industry. The combination of receding horizon optimization and hybrid renewable generation proves to be an effective approach to improving the economic and environmental performance and managing uncertainties while meeting production requirements. Demand response, scheduling and contract following strategies are considered specifically to manage the interaction between electricity generators and end-users with the ultimate goal of maximizing benefits. Sensitivity and uncertainty analyses are carried out to elucidate the key parameters that influence the energy management strategies. Furthermore a methodology for proactive optimization-based reconfiguration of heat-exchanger networks as an essential ancillary component of process industry is developed where both renewable energy generation and time-varying electricity pricing are considered in decision making. Real-time optimization strategies and dynamic system control are implemented to realize the optimal configurations.
