A few moments later a girl came into the room. She was shabby, but neat, in black. She was white-faced, dark-eyed, thin, and twenty-two years old, with the experience of fifty. Her manner was nervous this morning, which was unusual; ordinarily she had the composure of her class but it might be that she was a little afraid of him, or of losing her place. Book excerpt: In this lucid study, Berges interprets the scroll of Isaiah as a 'literal cathedral', written by many hands and empowered by the experience of sorrow and disaster, liberation and joy. Methodologically, the book combines synchronic and diachronic perspectives and paves the way to a fruitful conversation between them. The vast reception history of the Book of Isaiah in the Septuagint, the New Testament, and in rabbinic and Christian traditions, as well as in painting and music, is also illustrated by some of the most illuminating examples.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophets: Elijah to Christ In quest of truth and light on these prophets I have gone to many books, and the best Of them have sent me back ere long to the Bible. For counsel and encouragement I have looked to a few friends, and especially to three: Walter L. Lingle, D. D., presiding genius at Montreat; Wm. M. Mcpheeters, D. D., professor Of He brew in the Columbia Theological Seminary; and George A. Wauchope, Ph. D., professor Of English in the University Of South Carolina. Each of these in his own way has let the cour tesy of a friend shine through the discrimination of a scholar. Other men have laboured, and ye are entered into their labours. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophets of the Old Testament Individual prophets have received brilliant ex position at the hands of English-speaking scholars. There is still room, however, for a comprehensive treatment of the subject, which allows the prophets to speak for themselves. The present volume seeks to fulfil this ideal, within necessary limits. Thecourse of prophecy is traced from its first morning beams, tillthelightdisappearsintherosyflushoi Apocalypse; the prophets are set on the back ground of their time, and portrayed in their sharply contrasted personality and experience; but the stress throughout is laid on translations of their most significant utterances, which reproduce as nearly. As possible the sense and rhythm of the original. The volume is thus, in subject-matter and method of treatment alike, the complement of my previous work on The Poets of the Old Testament, to which the reader is referred for a statement of general principles. The prophets were not merely men of genius, who thus became leaders of their race. No theory which omits the element of inspiration in their lives can account for the facts. They were men who wrought and spake as they were impelled by the Holy Spirit. Yet, possessing this controlling purpose, they seemingly acted with entire freedom in their choice of methods, and each maintained throughout his own characteristics. We recognize him as a man Of great zeal and boldness in the service Of his God; yet was he not without the fears and misgivings and infirmities which bring him down to the level Of our own frail and erring humanity. He stands forth upon the sacred page as one of the sternest reformers that ever called a guilty people to repent ance; and yet beneath that rugged exterior there beat a heart Of the finest and tenderest sympathy for human suffering, exemplifying a character, not seldom given in the Scriptures and found beneath their teachings, where an inflexible and high-toned sense Of right is joined to the warmest and truest benevolence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophet of Nazareth This volume is not the manifesto of a school, a sect, or a party. The author acknowledges with gratitude the helpful suggestions and inspiring influence of every great thinker and every faithful worker with whom he has come in contact. But he has endeavored, so far as possible, to see with his own eyes the character of each important problem, and to present in his own language, simply and unequivocally, the conclusions to which many years of study and reflection have led him. In attempting to make a comprehensive statement within narrow limits of space, he has often been obliged to give the bare results where it would have been a pleasure to outline the course of protracted investigation. More frequently, a few suggestions of decisive facts will convince the reader familiar with the problems that nothing has been taken for granted without fresh examination. Wherever it seemed necessary to indicate carefully the grounds for a view not yet fully understood or generally adopted, the author has had no hesitancy in doing so at sufficient length. Particularly is this the case with the question as to the origin and significance of the term "son of man." As the author was the first to suggest that Jesus never used this term concerning himself, either to claim Messiahship in any sense, or to hint that he was "a mere man," or "the true man," but in some pregnant utterances used it in reference to "man" in general, his duties, rights, and privileges, he has felt it incumbent upon himself to attempt such a re-interpretation of the life and teaching of Jesus in the light of this conviction as has been urgently and rightly demanded. Anathoth was one of the thirteen cities that were given to the priests in the time of Joshua. It was situated about three miles north of Jerusalem, within the limits of the tribe of Benjamin. Jeremiah was thus of the sacerdotal or priestly race. His fathers name was Hilkiah. Some have supposed that this was the high-priest who found the book of the law in the temple, in the eighteenth year of the reign of Josiah: but this is not probable. But are here the central and all-absorbing interest. We observe further that the appeal is now addressed to individual Israelites rather than to the nation as a whole, as if the great hindrance to the emancipation of Israel was no longer political, but lay in the selfishness and timidity of the mass of the people (1: Only a few writers2 have thought that these differences amount to a proof of dual authorship. How far they are to be explained by a change of situation is a question which must be deferred till we have examined the possibilities that lie in the historical background of the prophecies (p. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Prophet Isaiah The present General Editor for theoold Testament in the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges desires to say that, in accordance with the policy of his predecessor the Bishop of Worcester, he does not hold himself responsible for the particular interpreta tions adopted or for the opinions expressed by the editors of the several Books, nor has he endeavoured to bring them into agreement with one another. It is inevitable that there should be differences of Opinion in regard to many questions of criticism and interpretation, and it seems best that these differences should find free expression in different volumes. He has endeavoured to secure, as far as possible, that the general scope and character of the series should be observed, and that views which have a reasonable claim to consideration should not be ignored, but he has felt it best that the final responsibility should, in general, rest with the individual contributors.
