Book Synopsis Ethnicity and Violence by : Diego Muro
Download or read book Ethnicity and Violence written by Diego Muro and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a genealogy of radical Basque nationalism and the means by which this complex, often violent, political movement has reinforced Basque identity. Radical nationalists are mobilized by a shared frame of reference where ethnicity and violence are intertwined in a nostalgic recreation of a golden age and a quasi-religious imperative to restore that distant past. Muro critically examines the origins of the ethno-nationalist conflict and provides a comprehensive examination of Euskadi Ta Askatusana’s (ETA) violent campaign. The book analyzes the interplay of ethnicity and violence and stresses the role of inherited myths, memories, and cultural symbols to explain the ability of radical Basque nationalism to endure.
Book Synopsis Countering Coercion in Maritime Asia by : Michael Green
Download or read book Countering Coercion in Maritime Asia written by Michael Green and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decade, tensions in Asia have risen as Beijing has become more assertive in maritime disputes with its neighbors and the United States. Although taking place below the threshold of direct military confrontation, China’s assertiveness frequently involves coercive elements that put at risk existing rules and norms; physical control of disputed waters and territory; and the credibility of U.S. security commitments. Regional leaders have expressed increasing alarm that such “gray zone” coercion threatens to destabilize the region by increasing the risk of conflict and undermining the rules-based order. Yet, the United States and its allies and partners have struggled to develop effective counters to China’s maritime coercion. This study reviews deterrence literature and nine case studies of coercion to develop recommendations for how the United States and its allies and partners could counter gray zone activity.

Book Synopsis Roma and the Transition in Central and Eastern Europe by : Dena Ringold
Download or read book Roma and the Transition in Central and Eastern Europe written by Dena Ringold and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report brings together the available evidence from primary and secondary sources, including household surveys and results of recent qualitative studies, to develop a picture of the development challenges facing Roma populations in Central and Eastern Europe. While living standards have declined for all population groups during the transition to a market economy, there are growing indications that conditions have deteriorated more severely for Roma than for others, and that Roma are poorly positioned to take advantage of emerging economic opportunities. This report focuses on five countries in Central and Eastern Europe: Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania the Czech Republic, and the Slovak Republic. The first chapter of the report provides the historical context and an overview of the methodological issues and main data sources; chapter two presents the available evidence on welfare status and living conditions, examining poverty, housing education, employment and health; chapter three considers issues relating to access to social services; and the final chapter reviews the opportunities for Roma participation in the design and implementation of community development policies and programmes, and outlines policy implications.

Book Synopsis Exploring Mass Media for A Changing World by : Ray A Hiebert
Download or read book Exploring Mass Media for A Changing World written by Ray A Hiebert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beautifully written and class tested, Exploring Mass Media for a Changing World provides a comprehensive but modestly priced text around which instructors can develop a customized teaching package. Written for introductory courses, it covers essential information students need in order to understand the media, the mass communication process, and the role of media in society. It summarizes basic, generally agreed-upon principles, theories, significant historical events, and essential facts, but does so in a tightly written, readable style. Taken together, this information can be thought of as a minimum repertoire that all citizens of the "information age" need in order to become literate consumers and users of mass communication. Features include: *Historical Framework--For ease of comprehension, media processes and individual media are placed in historical context to show their technological evolution and the effects of those changes on society. *Organization--The first seven chapters deal with the evolution of communication theories and processes common to all media. The next five deal with specific media in the chronological order in which they became mass media. Chapters 13 and 14 introduce two non-media institutions (advertising and public relations) whose exploration is essential in order to understand how mass media functions in our society. Finally, chapter 15 returns to the theme of technological evolution and its effects on society with an in-depth discussion of the internet. *Flexibility--Because it is concise, affordable, and comprehensive, it can be used either as a stand-alone text in mass media courses or as part of an instructional package in courses where mass communication is one of several major units. *Themes--The following themes are introduced early and carried throughout: (a) the evolution of media technology and its effects on society, (b) the global and culture-bound characteristics of mass media, and (c) the need for media literacy in the 21st century. *Supplements--An accompanying instructor's manual begins with a chapter-length essay on teaching the mass media course then offers the following items for each chapter: topical outline and key vocabulary; key ideas to be emphasized and pitfalls to be avoided; discussion questions; objective and essay test items; and both print and nonprint resources for further study.

Book Synopsis Children of Minorities by : Enzo Pace
Download or read book Children of Minorities written by Enzo Pace and published by UNICEF-IRC. This book was released on 1993 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The case of the Gypsies provides a clear example of a minority group suffering especially severe discrimination. In the majority of European countries, access to basic services is extremely limited for Gypsies, with serious results for the health and education of Gypsy children. This publication originated in a 2-day UNICEF workshop,"Growing Up as a Gypsy," held in Florence, Italy, in October 1992. "The Making of Minorities" (Enzo Pace) discusses societal and group factors that create a minority group, minority group survival strategies, and the particularly vulnerable situation of minority group children. "Growing Up As a Gypsy: Insights from the October 1992 UNICEF ICDC Workshop" (Sinead ni Shuinear) provides an overview of Gypsy child rearing and family life, access to health care, educational attitudes and attainment, housing practices and problems, and the role of the Gypsy child in family economics and employment. Recommendations include development of an information base and proposals for action in the areas of legal issues, accommodation, services, and social mobilization. "Gypsy Children in Europe: An Overview" (Sandro Costarelli) presents facts and figures about Gypsy children, covering legal status, demography, infant mortality, child morbidity, housing, child institutionalization, school attendance and completion, juvenile crime, and adult unemployment. "Gypsy Life in Four European Countries" (Sandro Costarelli) presents a comparative analysis based on case studies in former Czechoslovakia, former Yugoslavia, France, and Italy. "Innovation and Change in Gypsy Communities" (Alain Reyniers) examines cultural adaptation, settlement, and political action by Gypsy communities. The document also contains an article "They Can See the Future and It Hurts" (Patricia Clough) which appeared in "The Independent", Oct. 26, 1991. Contains a list of workshop participants and many photographs. (SV)
