The horizon consists of discrete production periods during each of which at most one product can be assigned to each facility. Product demands are assumed to be constant over a period but not necessarily identical in all periods. All demands must be met without allowing backorders. The problem objective is to determine an assignment of products to facilities over the variable length horizon which minimizes the sum of production charges and a general cost term which is a monotonically nondecreasing function of the horizon length. This problem is formulated as a nonlinear, integer program which, realistically, arises in industrial situations where schedulers use repetitive cycle plans such as the well-known economic manufacturing quantity models for controlling production systems. Due to this fact notable research contributions to Integer Programming have been made in very different branches of mathematics and its applications. Since these publications are scattered over many journals, proceedings volumes, monographs, and working papers, a comprehensive bibliography of all these sources is a helpful tool even for specialists in this field. I initiated this compilation of literature in 1970 at the Institut fur ~konometrie und Operations Research, University of Bonn. Since then many collaborators have contributed to and worked on it. Among them Dipl.-Math. Claus Kastning has done the bulk of the work. With great perseverance and diligence he has gathered all the material and checked it with the original sources. The main aim was to incorporate rare and not easily accessible sources like Russian journals, preprints or unpublished papers. Without the invaluable and dedicated engagement of Claus Kastning the bibliography would never have reached this final version. For this reason he must be considered its responsible editor. As with any other collection this literature list has a subjective viewpoint and may be in some sense incomplete. We have however tried to be as complete as possible. The bibliography contains 4704 different publications by 6767 authors which were classified by 11839 descriptor entries.

The pioneering first volume was compiled by Claus Kastning during the years 1970 - 1975 and appeared in 1976 as Volume 128 of the series Lecture Notes in Economics and Mathematical Systems published by the Springer Verlag. Work on the project was continued by Dirk Hausmann, Reinhardt Euler, and Rabe von Randow, and resulted in the publication of the second, third, and fourth volumes in 1978, 1982, and 1985 (Volumes 160, 197, and 243 of the above series). The present book constitutes the fifth volume of the bibliography and covers the period from autumn 1984 to the end of 1987. It contains 5864 new publications by 4480 authors and was compiled by Rabe von Randow. Its form is practically identical to that of the first four volumes, some additions having been made to the subject list.

Production costs can be categorized as basic production costs, which consist of material costs, labour costs, machine startup costs and over head costs, and inventory related costs, which include costs of capital tied up in inventory, insurances and taxes. Customer service is the capability of the firm to deliver to their clients the products in the quantity they ordered at the agreed upon time and place. The costs of realizing a certain service level are usuaIly very dif ficult to convert into money. They include costs of expediting, loss of customer goodwill, and loss of sales revenues resulting from the short age situation.

This is a generalization of the classical cyclical 'Economic Manufacturing Quantity' formulations. Through number-theoretic arguments. The authors discuss questions of feasibility, the existence of communicating classes, and sensitivity to 'saturation'. In the finite horizon case, the authors present an algorithm that generates the production plan, and another algorithm that generates the production schedule through a shortest-path interpretation. In the infinite horizon case, the authors do likewise: the optimal production plan is a Turnpike cycle. Due to the immensity of the state space, approximate procedures are also discussed. (Author).

In a straightforward manner this problem is formulated as a linear, mixed integer program which can be given a network flow interpretation. However, the problem can be solved as a minimal-cost flow problem only for a very special case. It is then shown that the general problem can be reformulated as an all integer program which can be solved using any of the very efficient algorithms for finding minimal-cost flows in single commodity networks. The number of submitted abstracts and papers was continuously increas ing such that the Programme Committee of this actual 8th Conference on Production Research has been forced to introduce a further refereeing procedure. Each submitted abstract was presented to at least two referees. This resulted not only in a reduction of the number of presented full papers and poster contributions but, as the Programme Committee and the Editiors hope, it led also to a considerable increase in the scientifIc quality of this 8th International Conference on Production Research. The preceeding conference in Windsor, Canada, was dedicated to the topic: Production Research as a Means of Productivity Improvement. We don't believe that this statement has become untrue in the meanwhile.
