The author states that William Shakespeare draws many details of his drama "Julius Caesar" from the "Cesare" of the Italian dramatist, and both works share many striking similarities. Book excerpt: This edition of one of Shakespeare's best known and most frequently performed plays argues for Julius Caesar as a new kind of political play, a radical departure from contemporary practice, combining fast action and immediacy with compelling rhetorical language, and finding a clear context for its study of tyranny in the last decade of the reign of Elizabeth 1. The richly experimental verse and the complex structure of the play are analysed in depth, and a strong case is made for this to be the first play to be performed at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre.'Daniell's edition is a hefty piece of serious scholarship that makes a genuine contribution.'Eric Rasmussen, University of Nevada at Reno, Shakespeare Survey'This is a stimulating new look at a play which is too often exhibited in a critical museum.' Book excerpt: What actions are justified when the fate of a nation hangs in the balance, and who can see the best path ahead? Julius Caesar has led Rome successfully in the war against Pompey and returns celebrated and beloved by the people. Yet in the senate fears intensify that his power may become supreme and threaten the welfare of the republic. A plot for his murder is hatched by Caius Cassius who persuades Marcus Brutus to support him. Though Brutus has doubts, he joins Cassius and helps organize a group of conspirators that assassinate Caesar on the Ides of March. But, what is the cost to a nation now erupting into civil war? A fascinating study of political power, the consequences of actions, the meaning of loyalty and the false motives that guide the actions of men, Julius Caesar is action packed theater at its finest.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespere's Tragedy of Julius Caesar The text of this edition of Julius Caesar follows that of the First Folio as closely as seemed practicable. The few changes introduced, apart from those universally adopted, are mentioned in the Notes; but it is obviously inconsistent with the purposes of the edition to include any discussion of textual difficulties. In general, the Introduction and Notes are designed to furnish the material necessary for the intelligent appreciation of the play by the student, but not to make excursions into the many interesting fields constantly opened to view. In the preparation of the Notes Mr. Aldis Wright's edition of Julius Caesar was used so freely and gratefully as to deserve particular mention. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: “Julius Caesar (The Unabridged Play) + The Classic Biography: The Life of William Shakespeare” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Written around 1599, Julius Caesar is a tragedy by William Shakespeare. The play is based on historical events surrounding the conspiracy against the ancient Roman leader Julius Caesar (c.100-44B.C.) and the civil war that followed his death. Shakespeare portrays Caesar's assassination on the Ides of March (March 15) by a group of conspirators who feared the ambitious leader would turn the Roman Republic into a tyrannical monarchy. Shakespeare' s main source for the play is Plutarch's famous biography The Life of Julius Caesar, written in Greek in the 1st century and translated into English in 1579 by Sir Thomas North. Life of William Shakespeare is a biography of William Shakespeare by the eminent critic Sidney Lee. This book was one of the first major biographies of the Bard of Avon. It was published in 1898, based on the article contributed to the Dictionary of National Biography. William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, the authorship of some of which is uncertain. Sir Sidney Lee (1859 – 1926) was an English biographer and critic. He was a lifelong scholar and enthusiast of Shakespeare. His article on Shakespeare in the fifty-first volume of the Dictionary of National Biography formed the basis of his Life of William Shakespeare. This full-length life is often credited as the first modern biography of the poet.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Plays, Vol. 3: Julius Caesar The point, however, is of no very great importance, for if Shakespeare, as is not improbable, referred to his own play when he makes Polonius say (hamlet iii. Z. 108, 'i did enact Julius Cesar: I was killed in the Capitol; Brutus killed me, ' this carries us back at least to 1602. But Mr. Halliwell (phillipps) has quoted a passage from Weever's Mirror of Martyrs, which seems to contain a direct reference to Shake speare's work, and would thus place it before 1601, when Weever's poem was published. The passage is as follows. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
