Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of French Literature The following outline of French literature is based on lectures given in the Johns Hopkins University, and has therefore certain definite needs of instruction in mind. The original notes have however been worked over, enlarged, and separated into paragraphs - not always happily - and can, by omission or expansion, be made to serve as a statement of facts for any period desired. Certain defects of execution are evident. The attempt to modernize all names and titles previous to the sixteenth century has sometimes failed through habit or inadvertence. The substitution of the English definite article for the French has led to many absurdities, and seems now to have been unwise. In the first chapters, intended for specialists or for extended commentaries by instructors, the necessary conciseness has at times led to obscurity for beginners. The least satisfactory period is that of the Eighteenth Century, both in division and matter. A serious omission is the dramatic work of Louis-Sebastien Mercier (1740-1814). The most available reference book for Mediaeval Literature is: La litterature francaise au moyen age, Gaston Paris. Paris, 1888. 16mo. This manual has served to revise the whole period. Its Bibliography is an important feature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primer of French Literature The first edition of this little book appeared without a preface: the second may perhaps be allowed one, if only to express the Author's thanks to his critics and to the public for the reception given'to his work. Some corrections of phrase have been made, and a few errors in the dates have been rectified. That such corrections have not been more numerous is, I believe, mainly owing to the great care with which my friend Mr. Andrew Lang read the proof sheets for me and to the valuable suggestions which he made. In deference to the request of several friends an index has been added, though I myself consider the addition somewhat superfluous in the case of a book the body of which is little more than an index in itself. I have limited it to those names in connection with which something more than a mere mention will be found in the text. For the compiling of this index I owe my best thanks to Miss Emily J. Carey; while for indicating to me a somewhat important omission in a passage relating to Pascal I am obliged to M. Paul Stapfer, Professor in the Faculty of Letters at Grenoble. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of French Literature Instead of closing the survey, as do some books, with the decline of Romanticism, or as others, with that of Naturalism, the history of French literature has been traced down to the present day. It may be objected that living writers are too near to us to allow of an impartial and complete judgment on their works. No attempt has been made to pass any such judgment, but such an account of the French literature of today is given as may at least serve to indicate its general tendencies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of French Literature HE lack of a convenient and yet comprehensive history of French literature, beyond the range of skeleton outlines or compendiums of facts, has long been apparent from experience to the present writer. On the other hand, excellent works in French, such as those of Brunetiere or of M. Lanson, are written from a standpoint unfamiliar to the English-speaking reader or student, and take too much for granted. M. Lamson's book is, perhaps, the best one-volume history of French literature in existence, but foreigners often find it difficult to handle. An effort is here made to meet the needs of readers in a work going beyond simple outlines, yet not pretending to specialisation in every period a thing which is impossible for one man now that we are, of necessity, either mediaevalists or moderns. The book might, perhaps, more fittingly be called a literary history of France, inasmuch as the relations have been emphasised of literature and social environment, and the Latin writings of the Middle Ages have been included. Accuracy has, of course, been sought as far as possible in view of the wide range of the subject. Yet the author does not aspire, as some do, to the merit of an absolutely independent judgment on every topic. On the contrary, he considers it the duty of the composer of a synthesis to rely, to a reasonable degree, on those who have spent months or years on individual writers whom he must perforce treat summarily. He sets himself down unhesitatingly as a pickpurse of another's wit the authorities from whom he has readily drawn will, it is hoped, be found accounted for in the bibliography. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern French Literature The editor of the present treatise was unwilling, while at Paris, to lose an Opportunity of becoming acquainted with the more valuable portions of recent French literature. He was naturally desirous that the results of his conscientious studies might be od'ored to the public in such a way as would tend to remove prejudices with which the subject is unfortunately con useted in this country. But convinced that the latter purpose can be effected sooner, and perhaps better, by less ambitious la bors than those of authorship, he has, by the advice of his Father. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masters of French Literature For the general reader, I fancy such a his tory of French literature would be far more illuminating than some of the detailed hand books which bewilder the mind with thousands of names and titles, and brief, insufficient ah stracts of books great and small. There would be the difference that exists between a series of views from twenty mountain tops, each one within sight of its immediate neighbors, and the record made by a pedometer. Or, to vary this rather prolonged figure of speech which has helped us thus far, such a history would possess the advantage that a person gains from residence in a few foreign towns, as compared with spending an equal amount of time in rapid travel, from one meaningless hotel to another. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specimens Of French Literature From Villon To Hugo: Selected And Edited T un origin of this book has been described in the Preface of the Short History of French Literature (c larendon Press), to which it is intended to form a companion. I need not here weary the reader by indicating at length the various objects I have had before me in the compilation. Among these, complete illustration of the beauties of any particular author has, it is needless to say, found no place, much less collection of my own favourite pieces. It has occasionally been necessary, for the sake of completing the panorama, to draw on what some people may not think the best work of individual writers. To make the whole a sufficient tableau of the various achievements of French literature from the literary point of view has been the main thing considered. Must emphasise the words from the literary point of view, ' because from any other the allotment of 3pace may seem oepricious. It has also to be remembered that some kinds of literature, such as prose fiction and drama, especially the latter, lend themselves with difliculty to the purpose. For instance, Racine is undoubtedly a greater name in French literature than Alfred de Musset. But Racine wrote in astyle which has few variations, and which is peculiarly difficult to exhibit in those variations except at great length. For the present purpose therefore a single extract suflices Again, Musset is, according to some, a greater name than Gautier, according to none, perhaps, a less. But Gautier was master of a variety of forms which are very different from each other and can be well illustrated, all being im portant as instances of the powers of the language: while Musset was more confined in range, and even within that range (as in his incomparable Proverbes) cannot be always shewn by sample at all. These are some of the conside rations which impose on the compiler of such a book as this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of French Literature: From the Oath of Strasburg to Chanticler During several centuries these national and religious poems were orally transmitted from generation to generation until Charlemagne became the principal hero, his legend absorbing all others, and in the tenth century was born the chanson de gate of truly French character. A number of these chansons de geste were inspired by the oral traditions circulating during the Merovingian period, others were ih spired by the old Cantilenes. Our chansons de geste, there fore, says Leon Gautier, are military and not clerical, and owe nothing to certain Latin chronicles from which it is believed by some they have arisen. He tells us that the Chromque do Turpin is posterior to the first chansons de giants. The Chronique do Turpin and most of the analogous legends are the works of some rhetorician of the monasteries who copied without intelligence and without animation our first chansons de geste. F. Scholle, also asserts that the poems had for a long time been preserved by oral tradition before having been written, and that the various readings of the diflerent compilations are due partly to the intervention of the jongleurs and not solely to the copyists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Introduction, to the Study of French Literature "Literature," say M. de Bonald, "is the expression of society." Napoleon I. could not separate literature from the life (as a whole) of peoples: their books he found "magnanimes quand le peuple est grand; vicieux, frivoles ou insenses quand il se corrompt et s'abaisse." Lamartine says of peoples: "Their memory begins with their literature." For Lemercier literature is the all-in-all, in which and from which and into which all is, comes, goes. Voltaire said: "les feuilles volantes sont la perte de la litterature." Guizot thinks that plastically and aesthetically modern letters are inferior to the old, superior as regards sentiments, profundity, and deep-set ideas. I have quoted these Frenchmen in the forefront of my Notes, as they give in their own incomparable way what we can only express as strangers, less well and, to the French, outlandishly. They have been cited, too, in their prose (original or translated). French prose, to many of us foreigners (i.e., non-French), is exquisite, nearly always. French verse generally pleases us less, often very much less. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
