Download or read book William Green written by Craig Phelan and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor from 1924 to 1952, was a controversial figure whom historians invariably depict as bumbling, incompetent, vain, and ignorant; the cheerful servant of selfish and reactionary craft uinionists, and the person most directly responsible for the split in organized labor in 1935. This biography provides a social and political context for Green's actions in an attempt to vindicate one of the last heirs of a religiously inspired trade unionism that sought cooperation between labor and capital on the basis of biblical precepts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The untold story of Lane Kirkland, labor leader and advocate for the American worker "This book tells the story of one of the true heroes of the struggle for freedom from totalitarianism. Through the skillful use of the power he exercised as the leader of American labor, and through his own unshakeable commitment, Lane Kirkland played a crucial role in our peaceful revolution in Poland. He did much more. Throughout the world, millions of free people owe him a debt of gratitude for his service to the democratic cause. I am gratified that the full account of his indispensable contribution to freedom has finally been written." --Lech Walesa, founder of Solidarity and former president of Poland "Lane Kirkland believed in freedom and would fight for his beliefs. Here is a portrait of his tough, principled, and consistent brand of leadership. We can admire him and learn from him." --George P. Schultz "I knew Lane Kirkland well. While he may not always have been able to secure the influence of the American labor movement he represented, he always supported the interests of the workers with great dedication and showed willingness to compromise. . . . [With] this biography, the man and his work will always be remembered. The book will also find considerable interest in Germany." --Helmut Schmidt, former chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany (1974?1982) "Lane was a crusader for freedom and I can testify on the basis of personal involvement that his role in the defeat of Stalinism was second to none." --Zbigniew Brzezinski, National Security Adviser to President Jimmy Carter

Book Synopsis Portrait of an American Labor Leader, William L. Hutcheson by : Maxwell C. Raddock
Download or read book Portrait of an American Labor Leader, William L. Hutcheson written by Maxwell C. Raddock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portrait of an American Labor Leader, William L. Hutcheson: Saga of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, 1881-1954 William L. Hutcheson's extensive personal files and correspondence, extending over a period of forty years, have been at my disposal through out. These were made available to me, and that for the first time to any writer without reservations, by Maurice A. Hutcheson, and by u.b. General Secretary Albert E. Fischer. Included are a great variety of socially and historically significant items, which shed much new light on the character and personality of our subject. The discoveries I have made therefrom will, I am confident, add much to the rounded picture of William Levi Hutcheson. Also made available to me in their entirety were the Executive Board's minutes of the Brotherhood, fortified by vital data from the parent American Federation of Labor. I have, of course, thoroughly examined the published proceedings of the union itself. In a year spent on research, extensive travel and scores of interviews I have profited from the generous help of more people than a brief preface can mention. I should like to single out at least those who were able to supply information to me from their long and intimate association with Hutcheson himself and their experiences in the labor movement.
