Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of selected papers of the Fourth Conference on East Asian and Western Pacific meteorology and climate. It covers remote sensing, atmospheric physics and chemistry, and the impact of aircraft emissions on atmospheric composition, as well as traditional topics like typhoons, rainstorms, monsoons and climate. In July 1989 the first conference in this series took place in Hong Kong. It was run with the innovative bilingual approach, which allowed both Chinese- and English-speaking scientists from various regious of East Asia and across the Pacific to come together, and share and discuss their research. It also proved to be an invaluable networking opportunity leading to a rapid growth of interaction and cooperation among a diverse group of scientists in the decade that followed. The breadth and depth of the presentations at the Fourth Conference was a testimony to the coming of age of this series of conferences, marking the tenth anniversary of an endeavor that had a modest beginning. Contents:Monsoon Observations:The Global Monsoon Systems (Q-C Zeng)The SCSMEX/GAME Sounding Networks and the Onset of the 1998 Asian Summer Monsoon (R H Johnson & P E Ciesielski)Relationship between the Planetary-scale Circulation over East Asia and the Intensity of the South Asian Summer Monsoon (J-J Xu & J C L Chan)Wind Changes over the Western Pacific (W T Liu et al.)Climate:Mechanism of ENSO-Monsoon Interaction During Mature-Decay Phases of ENSO Cycle (B Wang et al.)Impact of Land Surface Processes on Summer Climate (G-X Wu et al.)Impact of ENSO on the Variability of the Asian-Australian Monsoons (N-C Lau)Summary of COSMIC and Applications to Meteorology and Climate (R A Anthes & Y-H Kuo)Theoretical Studies:Tropical Tropospheric Biennial Oscillation and ENSO (C-P Chang & T Li)Typhoon:On the Formation of the Hurricane Eye (D-L Zhang et al.)Systematic Approach for Tropical Cyclone Track Forecasting with Dynamical Model Selective Consensus (R L Elsberry & L E Carr, III)Mesoscale Meteorology:Convection and Local Circulation under the Influence of Meiyu Front over Northern Taiwan (G T-J Chen)Air Pollution:Emission Inventory of Civil Aircrafts over Taiwan (P-S Lin et al.)and other papers Readership: Graduate students, academics and researchers in meteorology/climatology, as well as East Asian weather-forecasting services. This book was released on 2022-11-16 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the feasibility of using El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-based forecasts and early warning systems to prevent losses from floods and droughts in Bangladesh. Despite advances in short-range flood forecasting and information dissemination systems in Bangladesh, the present system is less than satisfactory. This is due to short lead-time products, outdated dissemination networks, and lack of direct feedback from the end-user. One viable solution is to produce long-lead seasonal forecasts—the demand for which is significantly increasing in Bangladesh— and disseminate these products through appropriate channels. As observed in other regions, the success of seasonal forecasts, in contrast to short-term forecasts, depends on consensus among the participating institutions. Therefore, the primary objective of the book is to revisit and modify the framework of an ideal warning response system for issuance of consensus seasonal flood forecasts in Bangladesh. The book discusses issues related to the 5-stage Flood Forecasts, Warning, and Response System (FFWRS) and emphasizes the role of the seasonal ‘Climate Outlook Forum (COF)’ in Bangladesh. The book also identifies ways to improve forecasting and early warning systems by utilizing ENSO-based climate data and models, and discusses a comprehensive and participatory approach to seasonal flood hazard management in Bangladesh. Several successful case examples of ENSO-based seasonal forecasts and early warning systems from other ENSO-sensitive regions have been documented. The primary audience includes academics and students, government policymakers, engineers, and business leaders.

Book Synopsis Colorado River Basin Water Management by : National Research Council
Download or read book Colorado River Basin Water Management written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies of past climate and streamflow conditions have broadened understanding of long-term water availability in the Colorado River, revealing many periods when streamflow was lower than at any time in the past 100 years of recorded flows. That information, along with two important trends-a rapid increase in urban populations in the West and significant climate warming in the region-will require that water managers prepare for possible reductions in water supplies that cannot be fully averted through traditional means. Colorado River Basin Water Management assesses existing scientific information, including temperature and streamflow records, tree-ring based reconstructions, and climate model projections, and how it relates to Colorado River water supplies and demands, water management, and drought preparedness. The book concludes that successful adjustments to new conditions will entail strong and sustained cooperation among the seven Colorado River basin states and recommends conducting a comprehensive basinwide study of urban water practices that can be used to help improve planning for future droughts and water shortages.
