Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is divided into two parts. The first one is purely algebraic. Its objective is the classification of quadratic forms over the field of rational numbers (Hasse-Minkowski theorem). It is achieved in Chapter IV. The first three chapters contain some preliminaries: quadratic reciprocity law, p-adic fields, Hilbert symbols. Chapter V applies the preceding results to integral quadratic forms of discriminant ± I. These forms occur in various questions: modular functions, differential topology, finite groups. The second part (Chapters VI and VII) uses "analytic" methods (holomor phic functions). Chapter VI gives the proof of the "theorem on arithmetic progressions" due to Dirichlet; this theorem is used at a critical point in the first part (Chapter Ill, no. 2.2). Chapter VII deals with modular forms, and in particular, with theta functions. Some of the quadratic forms of Chapter V reappear here. The two parts correspond to lectures given in 1962 and 1964 to second year students at the Ecole Normale Superieure. A redaction of these lectures in the form of duplicated notes, was made by J.-J. Sansuc (Chapters I-IV) and J.-P. Ramis and G. Ruget (Chapters VI-VII). They were very useful to me; I extend here my gratitude to their authors.

Book excerpt: How to Teach Math to Children is based on National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards and aims to help early childhood educators understand developmentally appropriate pedagogy in order to promote children's knowledge and skills. This new edition provides information about how NCTM standards and Common Core Math Standards are aligned. Over the course of ten chapters readers learn important background information about school mathematics and young learners, and how to help children acquire important math knowledge and skills. The book provides useful, practical information on developing number sense, promoting algebraic thinking, teaching geometry, assessment of student learning, and approaching measurement, data analysis, and probability with young children. All chapters feature excellent graphic support and all include clear and measurable learning expectations. Each chapter concludes with a reflection note that is specifically designed for pre-service teachers to encourage students to explore learning outside the classroom whether through class observations or technology. How to Teach Math to Children is an excellent resource for courses on early math education and instructional strategies.

This course goes way beyond the same old Christian math course that teaches math with a few Scriptures sprinkled in and maybe some church-based word problems. This course truly transforms the way we see math. Katherine makes the argument that math is not a neutral subject as most have come to believe. She carefully lays the foundation of how math points to our Creator, the God of the Bible. The nature of God, His Creation, and even the Gospel itself is seen through the study of math. Katherine does a marvelous job of revealing His Glory in this one-of-a-kind math course. Katherine Loop's Principles of Mathematics Biblical Worldview Curriculum is a first of its kind. It takes math to a whole new level students and parents are going to love. It is a guaranteed faith grower!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Youth's Assistant in Theoretic and Practical Arithmetic: Designed for the Use of Schools in the United States By repeating and varying these simple operations, children will soon become familiar with the fundamental principles of Arithmetic and their application to practical purposes. They will at the sometime be acquiring habits of attention, aad a promptness of computation, which will be of inestimablo value to them in after life. And this may be done in our rimery schools, as an amusement and relaxation to the scholars, wit eut interrupting, in the least, their other pursuits. The proper place to commence these instructions is in our summer schools. These, it is true, are usually taught b females, many of whom have not had the advantages of much arit metical instruction. But this defect in their qualifications, is not owing to a want of capa city to learn, but to a fault of the times when the study of Arithmetic was regarded as proler only for boys. But those times are pass ing by and with them this defect will vanish. A moderate share of attention to the subject would enable every young lady, who on gages in teaching, to give instruction in the intellectual Arithmetic contained in this work, and it is believed that they would find them selves amply repaid for this attention b the improvement of their own minds. By beginning with chil ran at the commencement of their going to schoel, every boy and' girl of ordinary capacity may he made more thorough! Acquainted with the principles of Arithme tic before they arrive at t e a e of ten years. Than most ofour scholars are on leaving school, after eving plodded through all the rules of Arithmetic in the ordinary way. Some knowledge of Arithmetic is no less necessary to the female sex than to our own; and experience has proved, that, if the course, here recommended, he pursued, the will not be found less capable of proficiency in this science. It s hoped that our instructors, both male and female, will take this subject into consideration and unite their efi'ortsin bringing about a referral flea so desirable in the course of arithmetical instruction. Book excerpt: Transform mathematics learning from “doing” to “thinking” American students are losing ground in the global mathematical environment. What many of them lack is numeracy—the ability to think through the math and apply it outside of the classroom. Referencing the new common core and NCTM standards, the authors outline nine critical thinking habits that foster numeracy and show you how to: Monitor and repair students’ understanding Guide students to recognize patterns Encourage questioning for understanding Develop students’ mathematics vocabulary Included are several numeracy-rich lesson plans, complete with clear directions and student handouts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "To truly engage in mathematics is to become curious and intrigued about regularities and patterns, then describe and explain them. A focus on the behavior of the operations allows students starting in the familiar territory of number and computation to progress to true engagement in the discipline of mathematics." -Susan Jo Russell, Deborah Schifter, and Virginia Bastable Algebra readiness: it's a topic of concern that seems to pervade every school district. How can we better prepare elementary students for algebra? More importantly, how can we help all children, not just those who excel in math, become ready for later instruction? The answer lies not in additional content, but in developing a way of thinking about the mathematics that underlies both arithmetic and algebra. Connecting Arithmetic to Algebra invites readers to learn about a crucial component of algebraic thinking: investigating the behavior of the operations. Nationally-known math educators Susan Jo Russell, Deborah Schifter, and Virginia Bastable and a group of collaborating teachers describe how elementary teachers can shape their instruction so that students learn to: *notice and describe consistencies across problems *articulate generalizations about the behavior of the operations *develop mathematical arguments based on representations to explain why such generalizations are or are not true. Through such work, students become familiar with properties and general rules that underlie computational strategies-including those that form the basis of strategies used in algebra-strengthening their understanding of grade-level content and at the same time preparing them for future studies. Each chapter is illustrated by lively episodes drawn from the classrooms of collaborating teachers in a wide range of settings. These provide examples of posing problems, engaging students in productive discussion, using representations to develop mathematical arguments, and supporting both students with a wide range of learning profiles. Staff Developers: Available online, the Course Facilitator's Guide provides math leaders with tools and resources for implementing a Connecting Arithmetic to Algebra workshop or preservice course.
