Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Commercial Speller The following lessons contain a collection of words very frequently misspelled by pupils pursuing the commercial studies. They have been gathered wholly-from notebooks in which the pupils have daily recorded words misspelled, not only in connection with the technical commercial branches but also in English work in all phases, - in history, civics, political economy, etc. Suggestions as to the meaning and use of each word are given, but these are not to be considered full definitions. The book contains one hundred and forty-six lessons, which are grouped thus: One hundred lessons contain untechnical words often used in business letters, including common words often misspelled, common homonyms, and pairs of words which are easily confused. Eight lessons contain lists of general business terms. Eleven lessons contain terms used in various lines of business and in handling important kinds of goods. One lesson contains a list of transportation terms. Another lesson defines electrical terms. Four lessons pertain to legal terms. Systematic reviews are given and occasional dictation exercises are inserted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Speller: Especially Designed for Use in Commercial Education The importance of correct spelling can hardly be over estimated. Nothing stamps one as illiterate so quickly as poor Spelling. Various attempts have been made to simplify our language and reduce its orthography to a phonetic basis, but as nothing has yet been accomplished in this direction, it remains for us to spell the language as it is, or suffer for our neglect. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Practical Spelling: A Text Book for Use in Commercial Schools, Colleges, Normal Schools, High Schools, and Academies The words in the lessons of this book have been very carefully selected with a view of giving only those most frequently used and most liable to be misspelled. They are classified under subject heads, each word is defined, also diacritically marked to show pronunciation, and the part of speech is indicated to agree with both the spelling and the definition. In addition to these essential features, the words are arranged alphabetically, and in each lesson they are numbered from 1 to 25, making them doubly convenient for reference. The best way to learn to discriminate in the use of words is to study them with other words along the same line of thought. Hence, all the words have been grouped on some im portant basis of classification. Under each lesson is given a brief dictation exercise consisting of the best thoughts of the best thinkers, concisely expressed, on the leading topics of that lesson. These gems of thought may be recited in concert from the Open book, or written from dictation, or recited from memory. The teacher can devise many interesting ways to utilize the dictation exercises and the aphorisms in the page headings. Original dictation exercises are also interspersed and numbered as separate lessons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Business Speller: Designed for Use in Commercial Schools To be a good speller is an accomplishment greatly to be desired, therefore its importance as a study cannot be overestimated. The embarrassment which results from a lack of knowledge of correct spelling is one of the most annoying. Constant use and practice and a never failing watchfulness and correction make good spellers. No one ever became such by applying the iew rules which we have, but there must be a careful training of the ear as well as the eye to the right formation of the word. Orthography is learned almost altogether by the eye, therefore the teacher's drills in orthography must be of a nature constantly to require the pupil to observe the word forms and print them retentively upon the memory. Correct pronunciation is also an absolute aid to correct orthography, therefore in this work we have given the correct pronunciation and syllabification of each word.
