Book Synopsis Sketches in History and Poetry (Classic Reprint) by : John Campbell Shairp
Download or read book Sketches in History and Poetry (Classic Reprint) written by John Campbell Shairp and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches in History and Poetry Of the ten papers, which have been named Sketches, contained in this volume, some were given to the public in periodicals by the author himself. Others are now printed for the first time. The date of the earliest is 1860; of the latest 1884, the year before the authors death. Four of them were given as Lectures in the chair of Poetry, Oxford, viz., VI., VII., IX., X. All the subjects, save one, are taken from Scottish History or Poetry, fields in which the writer showed a lifelong and special interest. One or two of the papers may be singled out as but slight in treatment of the subject; yet all of them contain passages which are highly characteristic of the author, and some are worthy of him at his best - as, for example, "The Songs of Scotland before Burns." They thus seem to me to be well deserving of collection and publication in one volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Italian Sketch Book Tm: enthusiasm awakened by the general amnesty granted on the accession of Pius IX, and his subsequent liberal policy, begins, as might have been reasonably anticipated, to react; and already the actual good, which his measures have efl'ected, is called in question. Heretofore, the barriers raised by despotism to human progress in Italy, have been, in a great measure, effectual: now, whatever motives have actuated the Italian princes and whatever maybe their ultimate designs, the spirit of the age has penetrated the heart of Italy; and it is.too late for mere arbitrary power to oppose her political and social regeneration, although it may ia definitely postpone it. We are therefore justified in indulging san guine though not extravagant hopes, and there are signs of the times which are full of promise for that region of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Loves: With Sketches of the Poets It was summer; the hot afternoon sunshine was playing amongst the leaves, and, as it streamed through the open lattice, fell in broad white patches on the oaken floor. A light breeze, scented with the breath of flowers, re lieved the atmosphere of oppressive heat, which nevertheless exercised a drowsy influence over the slumbering faculties of Madame Meissen, Who Pushed aside her spinning-wheel, took the large arm-chair, and dropped into a profound sleep.
