Excerpt: ... est painting represented a merry little boy, who sat drawing; he had for his model a little, white, nicely-clipped pug-dog, but the animal would not stand still, and was therefore bound fast with pack-thread, and that both by the head and tail; there was life and truth in it that must appeal to every one. The painter was, as they said, a young Florentine who had been found in the streets when a little boy. He had been brought up by an old glover and had taught himself drawing. A painter, now famous, had discovered this talent, the boy having been turned away because he had bound his mistress's favorite, the little pug-dog, and made it his model. The glover's boy had become a great painter. The picture proved it; but it was particularly shown in the larger one by its side. Here was but a single figure, a ragged but beautiful boy, who sat and slept in the street; he leaned up against the Bronze Hog in the street Porta Rossa.1 All the spectators knew the place. The child's arm rested on the swine's head; the little boy slept soundly, and the lamp by the image of the Madonna cast a strong, effective light on the child's pale, sweet face. It was a magnificent picture; a large gilt frame encircled it, and on the corner of the frame hung a laurel wreath, but between the green leaves, a black ribbon entwined itself, from which a long crape veil hung down. The young artist was just then dead! IV. TRAVELLING WITH THE VETTURINO. The most general mode of travelling through Italy is with the Vetturino; he arranges the whole, but then one must stop where he will, eat what he orders to be placed on the table, and sleep in the place he pleases to choose for us. Dinner and lodging are always included in the agreement; but the journey always lasts twice...

Book Synopsis The Ruined Walled Castle Garden by : Mary Gilliland
Download or read book The Ruined Walled Castle Garden written by Mary Gilliland and published by . This book was released on 2020-08-30 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. By turns mystical and realist, Mary Gilliland's intensely musical poems consider global apocalypse--'our course set for the destitute sunset'--but also celebrate the generative power of creativity. With preternatural empathy, she enters fascinating sensibilities--Virginia Woolf, Nikola Tesla--and sings 'the troubled music' of history. Gilliland's sinewy, nuanced poems understand earth--and consciousness--as gardens that no walls or enchantments can protect. Her vision is profound, enduring.--Alice Fulton Mary Gilliland's THE RUINED WALLED CASTLE GARDEN casts a sidelong glance at the human comedy in various times and places. Here a 'stubbled saint' stumbles into our contemporary world; the rush of life stops with a milennial 'where-were-you party.' Marked by compression, surprise, originality of language, a confident and eloquent voice cuts to the essential.--Mary Crow Like the apothecarist Keats, Mary Gilliland's poetry wells up from the healing force of unheard melodies. Her tensile lyric and fluent narrative grasp the sweet otherness in life, which is 'Eve's radical helplessness' to endure and bear intimate witness to both change and permanence. THE RUINED WALLED CASTLE GARDEN is a radiant testimony--and a triumph--of an unerring ear I deeply cherish.--Ishion Hutchinson

Working with many of the eminent thinkers of our times, including Zen masters, rabbis, Christian monks, psychologists, scientists, and an array of noted American figures--from L.A. Lakers coach Phil Jackson to author Maya Angelou--Lesser found that by combining a variety of religious, psychological, and healing traditions, each of us has the unique ability to satisfy our spiritual hunger. Recounting her own trials and errors and offering meditative exercises, she shows the reader how to create a personal practice, gauge one's progress, and choose effective spiritual teachers and habits. Warm, accessible, and wise, this book provides directions through the four landscapes of the spiritual journey: THE MIND: learning meditation to ease stress and anxiety THE HEART: dealing with grief, loss, and pain; opening the heart and becoming fully alive THE BODY: returning the body to the spiritual fold to heal and overcome the fear of aging and death THE SOUL: experiencing daily life as an adventure of meaning and mystery

Book excerpt: “Paul Tran’s debut collection of poems is indelible, this remarkable voice transforming itself as you read, eventually transforming you.” —Alexander Chee, author of How to Write an Autobiographical Novel “This powerful debut marshals narrative lyrics and stark beauty to address personal and political violence.” —New York Times Book Review A profound meditation on physical, emotional, and psychological transformation in the aftermath of imperial violence and interpersonal abuse, from a poet both “tender and unflinching” (Khadijah Queen) Visceral and astonishing, Paul Tran's debut poetry collection All the Flowers Kneeling investigates intergenerational trauma, sexual violence, and U.S. imperialism in order to radically alter our understanding of freedom, power, and control. In poems of desire, gender, bodies, legacies, and imagined futures, Tran’s poems elucidate the complex and harrowing processes of reckoning and recovery, enhanced by innovative poetic forms that mirror the nonlinear emotional and psychological experiences of trauma survivors. At once grand and intimate, commanding and deeply vulnerable, All the Flowers Kneeling revels in rediscovering and reconfiguring the self, and ultimately becomes an essential testament to the human capacity for resilience, endurance, and love.
