Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plea for Africa: Delivered in New-Haven, July 4th, 1825 In describing the misery of that devoted race, whose cause it is my lot to advocate, I can only tell you a story of simple, unallevi ated, unromantic wretchedness. There are no Spirit-stirring as sociations to break the monotony of the description. I can tell of no distant and shadowy antiquity, when Africa was the cradle of the human race, and the seat of science and arts and empire. I cannot compare the darkness that is now resting on those tribes, with some period of ancient glory; nor can I enlighten the picture of their present degradation, by alluding to some former age of Ar cadian felicity. There are no lighter shades to variegate the gloom. The wretchedness is so great and so unmingled, that the mind shrinks from the conception, and seems almost ready to take refuge in a vague and quiet incredulity. And when I have told you what this wretchedness is, my plea is ended for the pres sent, - I Shall urge no other argument. The only high way to the south was blocked up by the Cushites, who themselves had nothing to prevent them from spreading into all the regions now occupied by the negro race. This family, as it was the Oldest, ap pears to have been the most numerous of the four and we have reason to believe that they extended their settlements to Mozambique and the Cape of Good Hope on the south, and to Congo and the Senegal on the west. They are said to have tra versed a great part Of Africa and it is certain that almost the whole country south Of the desert took the name of Ethiop1a.1' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plea for Africa: Delivered in New-Haven, July 4th, 1825 The substance of the following discourse was delivered also in Boston, July 5th, 1824. The author has now consented to its publication, in the hope that it may do something towards extending and increasing the interest which so many minds are beginning to feel for Africa. He is not so presumptuous as to expect that these few pages will avail to awaken in others the enthusiasm of which he is conscious, and which has gained strength by years of deliberate reflection. His prayer is that his fellow Christians, and especially his brethren in the ministry, may be persuaded to examine a subject on which too many form their opinions without deliberation or inquiry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plea for Africa: A Sermon Delivered at Bennet Street Church, in Behalf of the American Colonization Society, July 4, 1830 Let not the oppressor triumph - says a great voice from heaven. God abhors the proud. The sighing of the prisoner comes up before him. The robe of sackcloth is as beautiful in his eyes as the gorgeous attire of palaces - and the human form, furrowed with the task-master's whip, is as acceptable to its Maker, as the pampered and delicately beautiful countenance of him whom the winds of heaven have not been permitted to visit too roughly. Book excerpt: In this powerful speech, Bacon makes an impassioned plea for the abolition of slavery and the expansion of American influence in Africa. Drawing on his experiences as a missionary, Bacon argues that the future of both Africa and America depends on a shared commitment to freedom and justice. This book is a testament to the enduring struggle for human rights and the importance of speaking out against oppression. Saving the Decalogue itself, it is difficult to imagine an injunction that any form of words could render more emphatic or precise, and still more difficult, perhaps, to conceive of any rule of conduct so hard for nations or for individuals to observe. Not in the whole world are there two nations professing more respect for divine authority than the Dutch of South Africa and the people of this realm; but subject their relations during the past twenty years to anything like a critical analysis, and it will clearly appear that the prohibition which the apos tolic language conveys, a prohibition which dates back from the teaching of the earliest exponents of our faith, has been honoured more in the breach than in the observance thereof; and here, perhaps, may be found some clue to the mystery - why English and Dutch have not succeeded in getting on together - by which the minds of so many of our countrymen have been exercised since the present troubles in South Africa began. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notice of Com; Stockton's Letter on the Slavery Question: Or, a Plea for Toleration Charles the Fifth, to sanction the purchase ofnegroes from the Portuguese in Africa, to supply the planters of the Spanish colonies with laborers. This was the act of a pious prelate, a measure confided, as it were, by Providence, to a high servant of the church, a holy man of wisdom and goodness, whose whole life was devoted to the well-being of his fellows; and who especially exhibited his benevolence, We are told by his historians on the conquest of Cuba, when he distinguished himself by his humane conduct towards the oppressed natives, of whom he became, in a manner, the patron, and set at liberty the Indians who had fallen to his share in the division.
