Book excerpt: This work examined variations in preschool education and the subsequent impact on first grade reading achievement in a sample of 64 children. The study was divided into three parts. The first part involved kindergarten and first grade teachers participating in a focus group interview where they were asked to share their views on issues relating to school readiness and the important early literacy skills children acquire during the preschool years. The second part of the study involved parents of second grade children reflecting on their child's early literacy preschool experiences. A survey was used to determine the child's preschool setting and the self-reported literacy practices used by parents with regards to their child's preschool experiences. The third part of the study examined DIBELS archival data that served as an intensive focus on measures of phonemic awareness and projected reading achievement. Results demonstrated that children who attended non-parental home-based preschool were slightly lower-performing kindergarteners in the area of early literacy. Findings generally confirm that children who attend a public pre-kindergarten setting enter kindergarten with somewhat higher levels of academic skills than children from other preschool settings.

Book excerpt: Home learning environment has been a central focus of inquiry in the field of early development because it is a key source of variability of many factors that impinge on children's development, learning and school success. So far, there are only a few studies using large scaled database and previous literature is limited in narrowing the perspective on the transition period of time between kindergarten and first grade. So the purpose of current study is to investigate the relationship between home learning environment and children's reading achievement from kindergarten to the first grade. The current study was based on 2935 children from Kindergarten to the first grade in the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten Cohort. Hierarchical regression analysis was used for data analysis method. The results showed in the current study that there is no relationship between home learning environment and children's reading achievement when controlled for children's kindergarten reading achievement. In addition, there is no moderator effect of mother's education level to the association between home learning environment and children's increase in reading achievement in the first grade.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to find out whether first graders who were found to perform below their grade level in literacy and might be at risk for retention could participate in an extended summer session of guided reading for a period of 60 hours and subsequently improve their reading skills. Students' reading levels were determined using the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) tool. Children were tested during the first week of the 6-week, 60-hour extended summer school session and again during the last week of the summer session. The researcher found that the children who participated in extended summer school session for 45 or more hours moved up an average of 3.6 DRA reading levels. The children who participated for 30 hours or less moved up an average of 2.5 DRA reading levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reading First Program is a central element of the No Child Left Behind legislation (No Child Left Behind Act, 2001). It builds on findings reported in a national consensus report (NICHD, 2000), about proven strategies to reduce the prevalence of reading difficulty in the early grades in order to help children read at or above grade level by the time they reach third grade. The program provides resources to schools for professional development, for purchasing reading programs/materials, for assessments of students, and for salaries of reading coaches who can help classroom teachers. Reading First departs from historical precedent in its reach into the content of instruction. Traditionally, the federal education agency has been focused on issues of access, and determination of actual curriculum content has been left to states and localities. The legislation contained a savvy blend of federal guidance for local decision-making; it did not endorse any reading materials or professional development or assessments, but rather articulated the procedures states and districts were required to use as they made local decisions about which districts and schools to fund as well as which specific tools those districts and schools selected help to implement the program. The Reading First Impact Study was designed to assess the impact of the Reading First Program on two core domains: classroom reading instruction and student reading achievement. This paper will summarize the methods used and the study's findings on the two questions of program impact. (Contains 4 exhibits and 2 footnotes.).
