Book excerpt: Several relatively new photonic components have recently come to the forefront in applications related to the photonic processing of broadband microwave signals. Included in this set of photonic elements are the wavelength tunable laser, high dispersion optical fiber, and the Bragg reflection grating. These components hold the promise of revolutionizing the field of broadband photonic processing. This report documents the performance characteristics of these components and shows how they can be used for two broadband phased array applications, beamforming and null steering. Two systems are described. A technical overview is presented for each system with experimental data provided to demonstrate the performance of each system. Both systems described herein maximize component reuse and fully integrate transmit and receive modes in efficient hardware compressive topologies.

Book excerpt: "Over the past few years, phased array antennas and variable RF/Microwave delay lines have been the subject of much research. This thesis presents a photonic solution to the generation of multiple, compact delay lines. Variable time delays are generated by optically tapping points on an acousto-optic cell by the use of a deformable mirror device. Isolation of a particular time delay is accomplished by the conversion of a time delay point into a corresponding spatial frequency by the use of appropriate optics. The desired time delay is recovered by heterodyning a local oscillator with the desired spatial frequency, selected by a tiltable mirror device. Multiple delay lines are produced by the use of a binary optic device. The design and simulation of the integrated optical system was carried out using a real ray tracing program written by the author. Theoretical signal to noise calculations are also carried out."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: The objective of this program was to advance the performance of the semiconductor waveguide modulator in externally modulated RF fiber-optic links for space-based and airborne platforms such as true time delay beam formation and beam steering subsystem in phased array antennas. Device and material approaches were investigated to improve the modulator based on semiconductor structures for achieving high spur free dynamic range (SFDR) and high frequency operation. In these approaches, the semiconductor optical modulators were specifically designed to achieve high slope efficiency and high center frequency, while at the same time maintaining minimal generation of spurious signals. The fiber-optic links using these modulators are expected to satisfy the low noise figure, high center frequencies, low power requirements. A high performance electroabsorption modulator with more than 40 GHz bandwidth has been fabricated and evaluated. A new design was investigated for a quantum well modulator that includes an intra-barrier to enhance the power handling and slope efficiency. Both theory and experiment has beer carried out to demonstrate this concept.

Book excerpt: The work established the viability of a fiber-optic approach for low-loss true time delay of wideband RF signals for phased-array antenna (PAA) beamsteering. In this approach an optical carrier modulated by the RF signal of interest is launched into a delay-line fiber composed of optical Bragg reflection gratings written holographically into the core of a single-mode fiber. The beam is steered by tuning the optical carrier wavelength for reflection from the appropriate grating. The fiber Bragg grating writing performance meets and exceeds PAA requirements. We demonstrated: (1) a time delay accuracy of approximately 2 ps (20 Ps verified); (2) a wavelength writing accuracy for Bragg gratings of 0.04 microns absolute, 0.01 nm relative; (3) a sidelobe suppression of 50 dBe at 2 nm channels and 60 dBe at 3 nm channels. We produced a 4-bit, 16 grating true time delay element which includes an optical circulator. An analytical model, which includes chirp, was developed that predicts both the optical and RF response for the fiber optic Bragg grating.
