Findings included an application of doctoral attrition to Tinto's (1975) Interactionalist model, how doctoral attrition continues to be an invisible problem, and recommendations for both doctoral students struggling to persevere and counselor education programs striving to increase retention rates.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to illuminate the experiences of counselor education doctoral students who had voluntarily departed from study and successfully returned. The main research question was: What are the experiences of doctoral students who have voluntarily departed from programs in counselor education and then successfully returned to the same programs? Six female participants completed a series of semi-structured interviews. The interviews were transcribed and then analyzed utilizing Creswell's (2007) 4-step approach for phenomenological research. Themes derived from the data analysis suggest there is a common essential experience to departing from and returning to study, including four major categories: (a) departing and returning are salient personal events, (b) faculty responses are noticed and important, (c) departure is informed by personal factors, and (d) departure is informed by academic culture. All participants conveyed that departing from and returning to study were significant events in their lives, and expressed a variety of reactions, both positive and negative. Participants also communicated the importance of how faculty members responded to them when departing and returning, suggesting that faculty members are uniquely positioned to respond to doctoral students departing from and returning to doctoral study. Finally, participants departed from doctoral study because of academic culture, personal factors, or a combination of both. No studies were encountered in the literature examining doctoral students who had departed from and returned to study, highlighting the singular nature of this research. The findings have implications for counseling departments, counseling faculty, and counselor education doctoral students. Limitations to the research study were elucidated and proposals for future research were offered.

Nine participants from Ohio counselor education doctoral programs were purposefully sampled and interviewed to ascertain their lived experiences of co-teaching. Data were analyzed using a five-step process and revealed three overall themes: (a) co-teaching experiences are built on relationships, (b) co-teaching experiences have a structure, and (c) co-teaching experiences impact students' development as teachers. Participants' collective co-teaching experiences were mirrored in the identified themes and used as a basis for understanding co-teaching practices within counselor education doctoral programs. The findings of this study revealed the need for a working definition and the intentional implementation of co-teaching practices in counselor education doctoral programs. Additional research extending the study to include a new sample, investigating faculty members' perspectives on co-teaching, the deliberate use of mechanisms for reflective conversations, the use of different methodologies (e.g., ethnography, case study, Q-methodology, etc.), and the distinguishing features of teaching supervision in counselor education is warranted.

Book excerpt: This phenomenological study sought to understand and describe the gatekeeping experiences of counselor education doctoral students and enumerate key influences in their learning and development. A national sample of 75 doctoral students responded to the descriptive pre-screening survey, and a sub-sample of 15 completed semi-structured interviews. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis, two overarching or meta-themes and five main themes were identified pertaining to how doctoral students view their role as gatekeeper and how they learn and experience gatekeeping. Meta-themes included doctoral students feeling "in the middle", especially between faculty and master's students, and how they are working to address these uncertainties, called Navigating the Grey Spaces of Gatekeeper Development. Major themes were Perceptions of the Gatekeeper Role, Professional Relationships, Gatekeeper Contexts, Assessing Professional Competence, and Ways of Learning. Perceptions of the Gatekeeper Role revealed differences between how participants viewed gatekeeping as doctoral students and gatekeeping as future faculty for the profession. Professional Relationships described the influence of multiple roles, cultural contexts, and power dynamics doctoral students encounter as developing gatekeepers, and Gatekeeper Contexts described supervision and teaching environments where gatekeeping occurred. Assessing Professional Competence enumerates the various theoretical and practical influences in working with trainees, such as developmental approaches and informal and formal assessments. Ways of Learning identified that role models and experience with gatekeeping were most helpful for developing gatekeepers but revealed concerns about who is gatekeeping the gatekeepers. Implications for counselor education programs, faculty, students, and other stakeholders are discussed, such as the need for increased use and involvement of doctoral students as gatekeepers, clearer expectations and supports for doctoral gatekeepers, and increased conversations around gatekeeping in content courses. Directions for future research are also discussed; there is a need for studies addressing cultural dynamics in gatekeeping and gatekeeper development and the gatekeeper development of neophyte faculty.

No such studies focus on the experiences of married male students in CES. The purpose of this study was to explore the shared lived experiences of married male doctoral students in Counselor Education and Supervision (CES) programs and their non-student spouses. Eight participants (four doctoral students and their non-student spouses) took part in this study. Using a phenomenological research design, the findings of this study were grouped by doctoral students, non-student spouses, and couples. Individual thematic labels for doctoral students and their spouses included general impressions, personal and professional changes, program-related benefits and challenges, and roles and responsibilities. Thematic labels for couples were program-related changes to marriage, marital friendship, marital conflict, traditions and rituals, and goals. The findings reveal implications for potential and current doctoral students and their non-student spouses, as well as for counselor educators. Coping strategies for students and recommendations for CES programs are also included.

Education experts and researchers have claimed the problems are embarrassing to the United States’ higher education institutions. Based on the problems, graduate school administrators are unable to graduate doctoral students at U.S. population growth rates. Currently, only 1% of Americans hold PhD degrees. Compared to other industrialized countries such as Japan, China, and Mexico, the rate is insignificant. The purpose of the mixed methods case study was to investigate if there was a relationship between motivation and retention rates at the doctoral level. The goal of the study was to determine if extrinsic and intrinsic motivational factors and constraints were associated with persistence in a graduate doctoral program. Data were collected from 193 doctoral and graduate students for the quantitative study, while 20 doctoral and graduate students participated in a qualitative study followed by a thorough semi-structured interview. Inductive and deductive analyses were performed, transcribed, and opened, while axial coding provided emergent themes and sub-themes. The research showed a direct relationship between financial implications, attrition and retention rates, and motivation in doctoral level students. Many doctoral students believed the primary reason they were unable to pursue doctoral programs was based on financial hardship. Doctoral students who responded to the survey added that motivation was the second significant variable that helped them continue their studies.

The body of literature on counselor education pedagogy at the doctoral level remains sparse. To date, no research has recognized gender as a lens for pedagogical training in the counselor education doctorate. This phenomenological study examined the learning experiences of eight women counselor education doctoral students across three CACREP accredited counselor education programs to understand how pedagogy supported or inhibited women's development as counselor educators. Women's ways of knowing (WWK) theory (Belenky, Clinchy, Goldberger, & Tarule, 1997) offered a developmental framework for understanding women's learning preferences. Data analysis revealed five themes that indicated relationships were integral in gauging and affirming participants' learning and developmental processes. Data analysis also revealed structures in the counselor education doctorate that contributed to barriers to learning for minority students. Suggestions for re-conceptualizing the counselor education doctorate are discussed.

The purpose of this book is to provide a view into doctoral student work-lives and their efforts to find a balance between often seemingly conflicting responsibilities. In addition to contributing to the ongoing dialogue on work-life balance in doctoral studies (Brus, 2006; Golde, 1998; Moyer, Salovey, & Casey-Cannon, 1999), the intention of this book is to provide other doctoral students with potential coping mechanisms, guidance, and assurance that they are not alone in this process. Additionally, the study investigated whether there were differences between levels of research self-efficacy, perceptions of the research training environment, and interest in research in relation to the demographic characteristics (i.e., age, gender, race/ethnicity, scholarly productivity, reported professional aspirations, and number of doctoral-level research courses completed) of counselor education doctoral students. An ex-post facto, cross-sectional design was implemented which included the following statistical analyses: Pearson's correlation coefficients (two-tailed), simultaneous multiple regression, and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Findings identified that the demographic variables of age and doctoral-level research courses completed had a statistically significant effect upon perceptions of the research training environment. In addition, results suggested that scholarly activity had a statistically significant effect on research self-efficacy scores. Finally, interest in research was positively correlated with research self-efficacy scores. In summary, the study addressed the present void in the counselor education literature with regard to counselor education doctoral students' development in the areas of research self-efficacy, perceptions of the research training environment, and interest in research. In order to contribute to the counselor education literature and support doctoral student development, it is crucial that counselor education doctoral training programs provide an effective research training environment to foster and encourage student research. Recognizing and appreciating the influence of counselor education doctoral students' research self-efficacy, perceptions of the research training environment, and interest in research may not only be important for students, but is also necessary for counselor education doctoral preparation programs to continue to develop and prepare students for academic positions and success. Study findings may provide beneficial information to assist colleges and universities to develop and tailor polices to encourage and foster research amongst their doctoral counselor education students.
