Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corroded pieces of metal, stamped lumps of copper, broken bits of glass with partial inscriptions, fragments of textiles, tiny beads-these were the raw material found at al-Fustat, the site of the first Muslim settlement in Egypt in the seventh century and the heart of Cairo for many centuries following. From the 1950s Dr. Henri Amin Awad accepted from the poor in this area objects that had no obvious market value in return for medical services rendered. Over the years he built up an extraordinary and important collection of artifacts. Carefully cleaned, sorted, and then analyzed by specialists, this material illuminates many areas of the archaeological record neglected or missing from other studies. The ten studies in this volume-covering beads, bone, coins, glass weights and vessel stamps, medical instruments, medical prescriptions, metal objects, and textiles-demonstrate the wide range of archaeological material once found in al-Fustat, a site no longer accessible since most of it has been buried under urban development or lost to a rising water table. Book Synopsis Compound Remedies by : Paula S. DeVos
Download or read book Compound Remedies written by Paula S. DeVos and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2020-12-22 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compound Remedies examines the equipment, books, and remedies of colonial Mexico City’s Herrera pharmacy—natural substances with known healing powers that formed part of the basis for modern-day healing traditions and home remedies in Mexico. Paula S. De Vos traces the evolution of the Galenic pharmaceutical tradition from its foundations in ancient Greece to the physician-philosophers of medieval Islamic empires and the Latin West and eventually through the Spanish Empire to Mexico, offering a global history of the transmission of these materials, knowledges, and techniques. Her detailed inventory of the Herrera pharmacy reveals the many layers of this tradition and how it developed over centuries, providing new perspectives and insight into the development of Western science and medicine: its varied origins, its engagement with and inclusion of multiple knowledge traditions, the ways in which these traditions moved and circulated in relation to imperialism, and its long-term continuities and dramatic transformations. De Vos ultimately reveals the great significance of pharmacy, and of artisanal pursuits more generally, as a cornerstone of ancient, medieval, and early modern epistemologies and philosophies of nature.

Book Synopsis The Undergraduate's Companion to Arab Writers and Their Web Sites by : Dona S. Straley
Download or read book The Undergraduate's Companion to Arab Writers and Their Web Sites written by Dona S. Straley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2004-08-30 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This companion provides information on the lives and works of about 150 authors who write primarily in Arabic, covering the first known works of Arabic literature in the 5th and 6th centuries A.D. to the present day. While concentrating on literary authors, writers from the fields of history, geography, and philosophy are also represented. The individuals represented were chosen primarily from the Encyclopedia of Arabic Literature. Among the major authors are Najib Mahfuz, the 1988 Nobel laureate; Nawal Saadawi, the Egyptian physician who is the leading female literary author in the Arab world and the most frequently translated into English; Abu al-Ala' al-Ma'arri, the 11th century poet whose verses are taught to every Arab schoolchild; and Avicenna, the great physician and philosopher, transmitter and interpreter of Aristotle, whose work on medicine was long the standard not only in the Middle East but also (in Latin translation) in Europe. In addition, entries will be included for the anonymous romances so common in Arabic literature, such as The Arabian Nights, a cycle of stories perhaps even better known in the West than in the Arab world. Interest in the history and culture of the Arab world at U.S. universities has taken a quantum leap since the events of September 11, 2001. In this book, the author demonstrates that at least three major, distinct literary and cultural traditions are included within the fields of Middle Eastern and Islamic studies—Arabic, Persian, and Turkic. The Arabic tradition is the oldest, largest, and most widely dispersed. Undergraduate courses in Arabic literature and culture are now being taught at both lower- and upper-levels at many universities. Such courses are often used by undergraduates to fulfill basic educational requirements for their degrees. Students in such courses often have difficulty finding information on Arab writers, and this volume fills the void.

Book Synopsis Atomization or Integration? Transborder Aspects of Multipedagogy by : Justyna Pilarska
Download or read book Atomization or Integration? Transborder Aspects of Multipedagogy written by Justyna Pilarska and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-22 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the result of cooperation between representatives of different academic disciplines, particularly researchers dealing with multiculturalism, cross-cultural education, civil education, penitentiary pedagogy in the context of global and European cultural and demographic transformations, and ethnopedagogues, sociologists and historians. The contributors here are united by a common interest in cross-border interpretations of cultural differences within pedagogical and social discourse. As such, the book presents in-depth and versatile reflections on the current ways of conceptualising multiculturalism as expressed across Europe. Each chapter includes a conclusion indicating the areas in which the respective study will have a particular impact. The book will be of interest to experts, practitioners and teachers dealing with multicultural issues; penitentiary tutors and authorities working with foreign prisoners; theoreticians of contemporary pedagogical discourse involving cultural, sociological and political issues; and the general reader attentive to processes of European integration and their related aspects, including cultural diversity, globalization, and religious radicalization.
