The Smackover is the most prolific hydrocarbon-producing formation in Alabama and is an important hydrocarbon reservoir from Florida to Texas. In this report Smackover hydrocarbon reservoirs in southwest Alabama are described. Also, the nine enhanced- and improved-recovery projects that have been undertaken in the Smackover of Alabama are evaluated. The report concludes with recommendations about potential future enhanced- and improved-recovery projects in Smackover reservoirs in Alabama and an estimate of the potential volume of liquid hydrocarbons recoverable by enhanced- and improved-recovery methods from the Smackover of Alabama.

Book excerpt: This is the draft topical report on Subtasks 2 and 3 of DOE contract number DE-FG22-89BC14425, entitled ''Establishment of an oil and gas database for increased recovery and characterization of oil and gas carbonate reservoir heterogeneity.'' This volume constitutes the final report on Subtask 3, which had as its primary goal the geological modeling of reservoir heterogeneity in Smackover reservoirs of southwest Alabama. This goal was interpreted to include a thorough analysis of Smackover reservoirs, which was required for an understanding of Smackover reservoir heterogeneity. This report is divided into six sections (including this brief introduction). Section two, entitled ''Geologic setting, '' presents a concise summary of Jurassic paleogeography, structural setting, and stratigraphy in southwest Alabama. This section also includes a brief review of sedimentologic characteristics and stratigraphic framework of the Smackover, and a summary of the diagenetic processes that strongly affected Smackover reservoirs in Alabama. Section three, entitled ''Analytical methods, '' summarizes all nonroutine aspects of the analytical procedures used in this project. The major topics are thin-section description, analysis of commercial porosity and permeability data, capillary-pressure analysis, and field characterization. ''Smackover reservoir characteristics'' are described in section four, which begins with a general summary of the petrographic characteristics of porous and permeable Smackover strata. This is followed by a more-detailed petrophysical description of Smackover reservoirs.

The discussion then shifts to the utility of a Bayesian-type formalism to delineate qualitative ""soft"" information and expert interpretation of reservoir description data. Book excerpt: The world is on the verge of energy crisis due to rising demand for fossil fuel to meet domestic and industrial energy requirements. In order to meet the rising fossil fuel need, the development of a framework for enhanced hydrocarbons recovery from mature reservoirs should be given a high priority given the fact that 70% of world oil production comes from mature reservoirs. The objective of this research project is to develop a framework for enhanced hydrocarbons recovery from mature reservoirs using Big Escambia Creek (BEC) field as a case study. This developed framework is hinged on accurate characterization of reservoir rock and fluid properties, successful modeling of variation of average reservoir pressures with time, and presentation of existing well models and how to appropriately represent them in numerical simulators to ensure performance of successful reservoir simulation studies. In order to ensure successful development of a framework, the Smackover reservoir portion of BEC field was comprehensively characterized to delineate the porosity and permeability profiles of the field using laboratory measured porosity and permeability data, as well as well log porosity data. In addition, the average reservoir pressure, which is required to estimate initial hydrocarbon in place, estimate hydrocarbon reserves, and monitor reservoir performance, was modeled with a decaying exponential function using static bottom-hole pressures available for some wells on the field. Furthermore, accurate modeling of reservoir fluid using available commercial fluid simulators, such as PVTi, was impossible due to high concentration of acid gas. Therefore, least square optimization technique was used to accurately model the fluid. The reservoir fluid PVT properties obtained through this technique were used successfully to estimate initial hydrocarbon in place and determine aquifer influence on BEC field using material balance calculations. The original hydrocarbon in place of 1.502 Tcf of gas obtained was in perfect agreement with earlier estimates made using pressure decline data and volumetric calculations. On the basis of this developed framework, simulation studies for enhanced hydrocarbons recovery could be performed on BEC field and other fields with similar rock and fluid properties in USA and around the world.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents an integrated study of mature carbonate oil reservoirs (Upper Jurassic Smackover Formation) undergoing gas injection in the Little Cedar Creek Field located in Conecuh County, Alabama. This field produces from two reservoirs, one grainstone-packstone and the other microbial boundstone. The main objective of the study is to determine a potential redevelopment plan to increase oil recovery from the field by targeting the remaining oil saturation. This study involves using numerical reservoir simulation to identify the remaining recoverable oil distribution throughout the field. The 3-D geological model, which served as input for the dynamic reservoir simulation performed in this study, was provided by another author. Reservoir simulation indicates that potentially high recoverable oil saturation remains in the unitized area in the southwestern part of the field. Also, the simulation studies show that the following redevelopment plan investigated in this study has the potential to recover up to 5 MMSTB of oil by January 2017: converting 3 wells to inject water into the microbial boundstone reservoir, converting one more well to inject recycled gas into the grainstone-packstone reservoir performing work-over operations on 18 wells, sidetracking a plugged and abandoned well 10560, already completed in the grainstone-packstone reservoir, to another location in the same reservoir, and drilling 7 new wells in the grainstone-packstone reservoir and 5 new wells in the microbial boundstone reservoir. All these 12 new wells should be drilled on 160-acre unit size according to the field rules. Moreover, reservoir simulation showed that drilling additional 6 wells on a unit size less than160-acre (infill drilling) could result in additional recovery of up to 0.7 MMSTB of oil from the grainstone-packstone reservoir. No cost-benefit analysis studies have been performed in this thesis. Thus, the redevelopment plan investigated cannot be recommended for implementation until such analyses have been conducted.
