Download or read book A Personal Record written by Joseph Conrad and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was in 1868, when nine years old or thereabouts, that while looking at a map of Africa of the time and putting my finger on the blank space then representing the unsolved mystery of that continent, I said to myself, with absolute assurance and an amazing audacity which are no longer in my character now: "When I grow up I shall go there."-from A Personal RecordJ sef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski was born in the Ukraine, saw Europe as a child, and saw the world from the sea as a young man. An adventurer and a dreamer from the start, the restlessness of his youth would inform the keen insight he brought to the classic novels he would write, after settling in England, under the name JOSEPH CONRAD (1857-1924), including Lord Jim (1900) and Heart of Darkness (1902).Conrad fills this, his 1912 autobiography, with tales of his Russian childhood and his ocean voyages as a sailor on French and British merchant ships, all told with a deeply reflective spirit and a narrative imagination that elevates the genre of the life story to the level of grand literature. Ringing with the author's own appreciation of the unusual course of his life, this is powerful-and true-background material for a new enjoyment of his enduring works of fiction.

Book excerpt: A Personal Record is an autobiographical work (or "fragment of biography") by Joseph Conrad, published in 1912. It has also been published under the titles A Personal Record: Some Reminiscences and Some Reminiscences. Notoriously unreliable and digressive in structure, it is nonetheless the principal contemporary source for information about the author's life.[citation needed] It tells about his schooling in Russian Poland, his sailing in Marseille, the influence of his Uncle Tadeusz, and the writing of Almayer's Folly. It provides a glimpse of how Conrad wished to be seen by his British public, as well as being an atmospheric work of art.[citation needed] The "Familiar Preface" Conrad wrote for it includes the often quoted lines: "Those who read me know my conviction that the world, the temporal world, rests on a few very simple ideas; so simple that they must be as old as the hills. It rests notably, among others, on the idea of Fidelity." Conrad wrote a new 'Author's Note' to A Personal Record for the Doubleday collected edition of his works (published in 1920) in which he discussed his friendship with the British colonial official and writer Hugh Clifford.... Joseph Conrad (Polish pronunciation: born Jozef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski; 3 December 1857 - 3 August 1924) was a Polish-British writer regarded as one of the greatest novelists to write in the English language. He joined the British merchant marine in 1878, and was granted British nationality in 1886. Though he did not speak English fluently until his twenties, he was a master prose stylist who brought a non-English sensibility into English literature. He wrote stories and novels, many with a nautical setting, that depict trials of the human spirit in the midst of an impassive, inscrutable universe.

Download or read book An Autobiography of Joseph Conrad written by Stephen Brennan and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heart of Darkness author Joseph Conrad (born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski in 1857) was a Polish writer who learned to read, write, and speak English after he was granted British nationality in 1886. Although his peers accepted him as a British gentleman, he never forgot where he came from. In fact, the history of his native land of Poland often inspired the short stories and novels he penned. Those details, along with the experience he'd had since moving to Great Britain, found their way into many of his published works. In An Autobiography of Joseph Conrad, editor Stephen Brennan has selected pieces from some of Conrad's better known nonfiction works—including The Mirror of the Sea (1906) and A Personal Record (1912)—to showcase some of the more exciting and trying times in the novelist's life. Readers will attend school with Conrad in Russian Poland, sail with him in Marseille, and meet family members who took part in his upbringing, such as Uncle Tadeusz. Portraits of Conrad throughout the years, in addition to photos of his town, home, and family, supplement the text and help readers envision the author and his surroundings during various stages in his life. Skyhorse Publishing, along with our Arcade, Good Books, Sports Publishing, and Yucca imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs. Download or read book Representations of Forgetting in Life Writing and Fiction written by Gunnthorunn Gudmundsdottir and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-09 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book primarily focuses on the concept of forgetting, with particular emphasis on how we can trace the forgotten in contemporary life writing and memory texts. It consists of two main parts: the first concentrates on life writing in particular and what the author calls “scenes of forgetting”; the second examines both fiction and autobiographies that deal with questions of collective memory/forgetting. The book’s principal aim is to map methods and strategies writers employ when writing the forgotten – it argues that forgetting is a constant companion in any memory text and plays a decisive role in the memory work performed in the texts. The main theoretical objective is to examine carefully the connection between collective memory and personal memory, by drawing from two disciplines at once: memory studies and theories on life writing. By considering both areas of research, the conclusions of this study are able to feed into both theoretical perspectives.
