Here, the author "unmasks" the great essayist as he surreptitiously and cleverly proceeds to expose the destructive power of Christianity on Western culture (and hence the world). As we face a rapidly growing specter of religious turmoil and threat on the international scene, this timely study provides an overview of Friedrich Nietzsche's positions and ideas about the Church and about power more broadly.

Book excerpt: These original essays explore how the concept of revolution permeates and unifies Julia Kristeva's body of work by tracing its trajectory from her early engagement with the Tel Quel group, through her preoccupation in the 1980s with abjection, melancholia, and love, to her latest work. Some of the leading voices in Kristeva scholarship examine her reevaluation of the concept of revolt in the context of the changing cultural and political conditions in the West; the questions of the stranger, race, and nation; her reflections on narrative, public spaces, and collectivity in the context of her engagement with Hannah Arendt's work; her development and refinement of the notions of abjection, melancholia, and narcissism in her ongoing interrogation of aesthetics; as well as her contribution to film theory. Focused primarily on Kristeva's newest work—much of it only recently translated into English—this book breaks new ground in Kristeva scholarship.

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "Stephen Hero & A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (Two Autobiographical Novels)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is the first novel of Irish writer James Joyce. An artist's novel in a modernist style, it traces the religious and intellectual awakening of young Stephen Dedalus, a fictional alter ego of Joyce and an allusion to Daedalus, the consummate craftsman of Greek mythology. Stephen questions and rebels against the Catholic and Irish conventions under which he has grown, culminating in his self-exile from Ireland to Europe. The work uses techniques that Joyce developed more fully in Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. A Portrait began life in 1903 as Stephen Hero—a projected autobiographical novel in a realistic style. After 25 chapters, Joyce abandoned Stephen Hero in 1907 and set to reworking its themes and protagonist into a condensed five-chapter novel, dispensing with strict realism and making extensive use of free indirect speech that allows the reader to peer into Stephen's developing consciousness. Stephen Hero is a posthumously-published autobiographical novel by Irish author James Joyce. Its published form reflects only a portion of an original manuscript, part of which was lost. Many of its ideas were used in composing A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. James Joyce (1882-1941) was an Irish novelist and poet, considered to be one of the most influential writers in the modernist avant-garde of the early 20th century. Joyce is best known for Ulysses, a landmark work in which the episodes of Homer's Odyssey are paralleled in an array of contrasting literary styles, perhaps most prominent among these the stream of consciousness technique he utilized.

Book excerpt: Lady of the Cards documents the relationship of publisher and artist Rosita Fanto, and Richard Ellmann, famed biographer of W.B.Yeats, James Joyce and Oscar Wilde. Fanto describes their meetings in Monaco, London, Oxford and New York, the growth of their friendship, its flirtations with romance, and the developing tensions with Ellmann's family, who imagined that the artist and the writer had become lovers. It chronicles the Ellmann-Fanto publication of the Oscar Wilde Playing Cards, the course of Ellmann's debilitating illness--Lou Gehrig's Disease-- his death and its legal and emotional consequences, focusing on his close relationship with "Rosita"(Fanto) at the end of his life. The memoir written in the form of a novel explores private archives and summons true identities. Intellectually and emotionally stimulating, Lady of the Cards is a sensitive and rich description of that delicious frisson of excitement which occurs between two people walking along the edge of an emotional cliff. Merlin Holland, author of The Wilde Album and Oscar Wilde, a Life in Letters

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Joyce’s deeply personal and “most memorable novel” (H. G. Wells) detailing the spiritual and artistic awakening of Stephen Dedalus, now freshly repackaged for the Union Square & Co. Signature Classics line. James Joyce’s semi-autobiographical first novel explores the author’s own love-hate relationship with Ireland through Stephen Dedalus, Joyce’s literary alter ego. Dedalus yearns to be an artist, but must first overcome the aspects of Irish society, like school and the church, that he feels restrains his creativity and stifles his soul. Joyce’s use of experimental literary techniques, including stream of consciousness, is on full display in his first novel, which he further develops in his later works, Ulysses and Finnegan’s Wake.
